Does the Decriminalization of Prostitution Reduce Rape and Sexually Transmitted Disease? A Review of Cunningham and Shah Findings2019 •
In 2013, research findings by Cunningham and Shah claimed that rape and sexually transmitted diseases were reduced by decriminalized prostitution in Rhode Island. The original unpublished claims have received wide media coverage which have gone unexamined. This review finds errors in their analyses. One error is the date when prostitution was decriminalized in Rhode Island. Cunningham and Shah claim that prostitution was decriminalized in 2003. Our analysis finds the date of decriminalization of prostitution was 1980. The change in the start date of decriminalization significantly alters the analysis and the findings. Another error results from Cunningham and Shah using an outlier data point to define a period of analysis. The results of this review call into question the claims that the decriminalization of prostitution reduced rape and sexually transmitted disease.

Modern-Day Comfort Women: The U.S. Military, Transnational Crime, and the Trafficking of Women2007 •
The trafficking of women has been a lucrative moneymaker for transnational organized crime networks, ranking third, behind drugs and arms, in criminal earnings. The U.S.military bases in South Korea were found to form a hub for the transnational trafficking of women from the Asia Pacific and Eurasia to South Korea and the United States. This study, conducted in 2002, examined three types of trafficking that were connected to U.S. military bases in South Korea: domestic trafficking of Korean women to clubs around the military bases in South Korea, transnational trafficking of women to clubs around military bases in South Korea, and transnational trafficking of women from South Korea to massage parlors in the United States.

This study was the first to research both contemporary international and domestic trafficking of women for sexual exploitation in the United States and to include primary research information from interviews with trafficked and prostituted women in the sex industry. Telephone and personal interviews were conducted with people who had experience with or knowledge of sex trafficking in the United States. This data collection consists of the verbatim questions and responses in 107 data files from the following groups of individuals who were interviewed: (1) international and United States women who had been or were in the sex industry in the United States, (2) law enforcement officials who had experience and expertise in sex-industry related cases or immigration, (3) social service workers who provided services to women in prostitution or might have come into contact with women from the sex industry and those providing services to immigrant populations, and (4) health care workers who provided services to women in prostitution or who may have come into contact with women in the sex industry.

Endogenous Reactivation rather Than Primary Infection of Sexually Transmitted Viruses in the Community during the Early Phase of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Hong KongAim: We aim to report a retrospective epidemiological study on patients with sexually transmitted infections during the early phase in the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Our settings is a primary care genito-urinary medicine clinic with two sessions per week, attached to a major university teaching hospital. We searched and hand-reviewed the medical records of all patients having consulted us during a Pandemic Period of 90 days (1 February to 30 April 2020). We then reviewed records of all patients having consulted us in two Control Periods each of 90 days before the pandemic. We analysed the records with final diagnoses most likely being sexually-transmitted only. Results: During the Pandemic Period, 61 episodes of sexually transmitted infections were diagnosed, significantly less than such in the Control Periods (360 episodes in 180 days; RR: 0.34, 95% CI: 0.25-0.45). The commonest pathogens were
This paper argues for making gender crimes more visible in the discussion of public safety in urban Rhode Island. It proposes making gender crimes a central factor for evaluating public safety in urban Rhode Island. It supports responding to and stopping gender-based violence as a way to create safer urban spaces in Rhode Island

The Social Construction of Sex Trafficking: Ideology & Institutionalization of a Moral Crusade (2007)2007 •
The issue of sex trafficking has become increasingly politicized in recent years due to the efforts of an influential moral crusade. This article examines the social construction of sex trafficking (and prostitution more generally) in the discourse of leading activists and organizations within the crusade, and concludes that the central claims are problematic, unsubstantiated,or demonstrably false. The analysis documents the increasing endorsement and institutionalization of crusade ideology in U.S. government policy and practice
