I.5.5), explained that slaves were the defeated enemies or “those who were born from our slave-women” (ex ancillis nostris nascuntur). Like war, the biological reproduction was also recognized as a genuine reason for enslavement. In Roman society, where the transmission of serfdom was conceived under a matrilineal pattern Patterson, 1982: 139), we may infer that men and women experienced the slavery in different ways. This difference, however, cannot be understood only from the theme of biological reproduction. Admitting that the Roman slave-women were under a double standard of submission (due to their social position of slave and women), Carla Rubiera Cancelas’ opportune book, La esclavitud femenina en la Roma Antigua (2014), offers a detailed synthesis of women’s slavery in Ancient Rome. Based on literary and legal texts, but also using the epigraphic and iconographic evidence as its main sources, Rubiera Cancelas’ study is divided in five chapters. In its first chapter, the book presents a historiographic course about the History of Roman Women. Despite some exceptions, historical interest on feminine slavery in Ancient Rome, as demonstrated by authors, was late in modern historiography. Named El uso de las fuentes, the second chapter claims for a critical view on ancient sources. Rubiera Cancelas (2014) points out that Roman literary and legal texts about slavery were written by privileged men: their writings, thus, exposes a misogynistic and pro-slavery opinion (p.47-48). Epigraphy, in this case, is a rich alternative to a less biased historical testimony about the Roman enslaved women. The third chapter explains the textual and iconographic images of Roman slaves. Influenced by gender and postcolonial theories under the encouragement of Gayatri Spivak’s essay Can the subaltern speak?, Rubiera Cancelas (2014. p.115-117) also recognizes the subalternity of Roman women-slaves because they were silenced in ancient texts. The daily work of Roman enslaved-women is the main theme of the fourth chapter, named Trabajadoras esclavas en la ciudad de Roma. Based on epigraphic evidence, the author rejects the well-known hypothesis of feminine domestic confinement and, instead, describes the multiple occupations of seruae and ancillae in ancient Rome. In addition to the female slave work in textile activities, medicine, teaching, breastfeed and prostitution, the arts, dance and public spectacles were also performed by Roman slave-women and freedwomen. The fifth chapter examines the theme of biological reproduction of ancient slavery. On the one hand, Rubiera Cancelas (2014) finds that ancient Roman writers circumscribe the slave-women to the role of “(…) mothers at the service of an economic and social system that explores them” (Rubiera Cancelas, 2014: 249). On the other hand, however, the author examines the kinship ties built by these women in order to overcome the social death installed by the slavery. Provided with a consistent historical and archaeological research, Carla Cancela’s book demonstrates how conservative and traditional ancient history can respond satisfactorily to the social present-days anxieties. By revealing the arbitrariness of moral judgement about the Roman enslaved- women, and by denouncing the silence applied to these women in ancient texts, the author invites us to a permanent reflection on the proximity between power, knowledge and social exclusion. The use of modern gender theories, as demonstrated in La esclavitud femenina en la Roma Antigua, compels us to rethink old and modern slavery regimes from a new and profitable perspective. This paper covers the main subjects that have been discussed during the very interesting lecture of Change Management by Dr. Foster. This course consisted of severallectures where we discussed the theory in the first part and the second part of the lecture we could benefit of a guest lecture from a practitioner from the field. The variation of the lectures in combination with the presence of the professionals from the field gave us the perfect example of implementing the theory in practice. We have been familiarized with different theories and they possible outcomes of them. Every guest lecturers gave us their perception of change and change management and how they implemented change in their organizations. This made it possible for us to spot the similarities, differencesand best practices according to these organizations.
El desarrollo de procesos novedosos aumenta el espectro de alternativas para la disposición de desechos líquidos urbanos. After examining the current state of canon studies and establishing some preliminary definitions, this paper will examine both internal evidence of canonical-consciousness within the HB and external evidence of the state of the OT canon in the Second Temple period. In essence, this paper will propose that the post-exilic and pre-Maccabean era saw a limited closing of the OT canon accompanying the cessation of prophecy. This limited closing served to exclude other religious writings produced in the Second Temple period as being important but of a lesser authority, and left a particular opening that would be filled by the long-awaited coming of the “prophet like Moses” (Deut 18:15-19). This will explain both the authoritative status of what are now known as biblical writings that already existed and also the expectation in sections of Judaism for further revelation from God through the Messiah and his forerunner.
Despite their strong stylistic affinities with North Syrian visual arts, late eighth-century cauldron attachments in the form of human-headed birds have usually been inscribed in evolutionary stylistic accounts of pre-classical Greek art. Though far from secure, their iconographic interpretation as figures depicting the famous sirens of Greek epic has even dictated the prevailing nomenclature in scholarly books and articles. However, these artifacts originate in the Near East and had an archaeologically attested life there (e.g. Phrygia, Urartu) before their usage spread to Greece and Italy. By carefully examining the lives of attachments or cauldrons vis-à-vis their function in Near Eastern contexts of discovery and circulation, this paper aims at rehabilitating these artifacts in the areas in which they first acquired their shape, form, and meaning. Their widespread distribution suggests that they were probably interpreted according to local needs and traditions but comparisons with better documented Near Eastern arts (e.g. Assyrian), suggests that a core meaning rooted in solar associations may have been invariably inscribed in the iconographic DNA of these objects.

The use of natural rubber to resist bitumen is usually prone to degradation and aging. One method to overcome this problem is the addition of antioxidants. This study aims to determine the effect of the addition of antioxidants 1,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethyl-quinoline (TMQ) on natural rubber modified asphalt crepe rubber and its performance in short-term and long-term aging conditions. The modified rubber asphalt mixture’s manufacture begins by melting the crepe rubber at 200 °C before being mixed in asphalt at 165 °C. Addition of antioxidant TMQ during the stirring process of the mixture of asphalt and melted rubber. The crepe rubber content was 8, 10, and 12% w/w, while the TMQ content was 1, 2, and 3% w/w of the total sample weight. The antimicrobial activity of hop extracts obtained from different hop genotypes were investigated against Staphylococcus aureus and Lactobacillus acidophilus. In this study the pure xanthohumol, purified β-acids rich fraction, as well as α-acids with β-acids rich fraction were used to test antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Lactobacillus acidophilus; whereby, the antimicrobial activity of different hop extracts against Lactobacillus acidophilus was studied for the first time. Microbial susceptibility to purified hydroacetonic extracts from different hop varieties was investigated by the broth microdilution assay to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The hop hydroacetonic extracts were more effective against Staphylococcus aureus than against Lactobacillus acidophilus.
