2021, Ibn Zohr University
Documentary film is mostly associated with factual events and real characters since it is widely believed that it reflects the absolute truth which is referred to as the thing-in-itself or the thing over there; but what about the multifaceted truth that suggests plural manifestations over one-dimensional representation? Given that truth itself is problematic, can documentary film be analogous to the thing-in-itself or it rather constructs what is claimed to be truth to afford a particular reality? On this basis, I shall focus on the fundamental approaches differentiating between truth, reality, and fiction to better understand the irregularity of documentary film vis-à-vis the normative aspects of other kinds of representations.
