FAIRY-TALE ENCHANTMENTS2021 •
More than two decades ago the folklorist Isabel Cardigos remarked that the hinge of fairy tales is the cyclical movement in and out of enchantment. I feel that this insight is important, and I propose to briefly explain my understanding of it. First, I mention the importance of using allomotifs to bring out the folk metaphors in fairy tales. Then, I discuss a basic symbolic paern of enchantments at the core of fairy tales. Overall, I add to Vladimir Propp's statement that the most complete fairy tale is a heroic quest the proposition that the irreducible core of fairy tales hinges on feminine maturation. Along the way, I discuss some metaphors suggestive of the lunar template at the core of fairy tales.
Journal of Analytic Theology
Can Analytic Theology be Phenomenological2022 •
The present essay is concerned with the question of whether analytic theology can be properly phenomenological. Both analytic theology and phenomenology are defined by reference to leading practitioners of both, and responses are given to objections to both approaches. The critique of analytic theology recently proposed by Martin Westerholm is considered, as well the objections to phenomenology brought forth by Tom Sparrow. The compatibility of analytic theology and phenomenology is argued on the basis of the definitions provided. Four brief arguments are given for establishing why an analytic theologian might consider adopting a phenomenological method. The essay concludes with a demonstration of a properly phenomenological analytic-theological treatment of the question of the relationship between Scripture and ecclesial tradition in dialog with the canonical sola scriptura of Kevin Vanhoozer and John Peckham.
Political Institutions, Party Politics and Communication in Ghana : Three Decades of the Fourth Republic
Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose? Revisiting Dennis Austin’s Politics in Ghana, 1946–1960, in the Light of the Politics of the Fourth Republic2024 •
ust two years after the publication of Politics in Ghana, 1946–1960 (PG, 46–60), the First Republic collapsed. The Second and Third Republics faced the same fate. The Fourth Republic (came into force almost a generation after the publication of PG, 46–60 in 1993) has lasted longer than the previous Republics. Should this longevity be a cause of joy and optimism among scholars and Ghanaians? As the decades pile up after the publication of PG, 46–60 and drawing insights from the work, can it be argued—and with specific reference to the politics of the Fourth Republic—plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose (to wit as things change things simply remain the same)? This chapter will attempt to answer these questions by critically examining some selected themes such as leadership, state formation, political parties, election campaigns, ethnic nationalism, political parties, etc. in PG, 46–60 (supplemented by other works in the Austin corpus) in the light of the politics of the Fourth Republic.
