RUSSIA: Оurs is the Victory
One of the most prominent leit-motifs in everyday Moscow life is the word, concept, and
metaphor of “victory” (pobeda) and its analogy “triumph”. Of course, Moscow has engineered
many conquests, from the rout of Napoleon in 1812 to the rout of Hitler in 1943, but, even so,
the persistence and application of “victory” is so striking that its continued omnipresence might
well inspire the following scenario:
After arriving on Victory Airlines on 9 May (Victory Day), I checked into the Hotel Victory
not far from the Victory of Taste Supermarket adjacent to Triumphal Street downtown. Taking
a Victory ‘Bus to the nearby Victory Café, I ordered a Victory Salad and a slice of Victory Cake
out of their Victory refrigerator. I then headed to Victory Park on Victory Prospect to work out at
the Victory Fitness Club on Victory Square where I picked up my vintage Victory auto (which I
had bought years ago from one of the Victory Secondhand Stores). Of course, I could have
rented a Victory bicycle on Victory Street, but had to attend meetings at the Triumph Gallery
and the Victory Photograph Gallery. That evening I had a drink at the Victory Beer Bar, dinner
at the Victory Restaurant, and went to the Victory Movie-Theater near Victory Boulevard to see
the 1984 Soviet film Victory. Triumphant, I hit the sack in my Victory bed to return home next
morning on my Victory flight.

It is with sadness that the IMRC reports the death of Lidiia Ivanovna Yovleva
in Moscow on 18 August, 2018, aged 87. A veteran art historian and for many
years senior curator at the State Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow, Lidiia Ivanovna will
long be remembered for her dedication to the cause of Russian art, especially for
her research and publications on the art of 19th century Russian Realism.
Treating of contemporary Russian art (exhibitions, interviews, auctions,
collections, commentaries), the third issue of the on-line magazine, Russian Art
Focus, appeared last month. For details go to newsletter@russianartfocus.com
Dr. Waltraud M. Bayer (waltraud.bayer@aon.at) announces a new research
project on “Russian ‘Oligarch’ Art Museums and Foundations: Private art museums
and foundations are on the rise – worldwide. Since the 1990s, their number and
impact on global art and (public) museums have dramatically increased. In the
Russian Federation, however, this development lagged behind. Only after the
millennium, in the wake of the privatization of the economy, did Russia’s newly
formed economic elite follow suit. The last decade witnessed a sharp increase in
‘oligarch’ art philanthropy, foundations and museums – covering a broad range of
genres: from contemporary to religious art, from Modernism to the avant-garde,
from Socialist Realism to the Soviet Severe Style, from the Imperial Russian
heritage to ethnic or foreign legacies. Some philanthropists have launched
museum or institutional initiatives; others are investing in urban gentrification
projects for mixed commercial-cultural use; still others are funding museum
projects, awards or donations. A characteristic feature of this new Russian
philanthropy is the growing involvement abroad: Russia’s tycoons finance
biennials, they co-operate with leading foreign institutions and private
foundations. Some are buying up auction houses and taking over prestigious
publishing networks in the West.
Their contribution to the (inter-)national museum world is of increasing
relevance, notably in view of the recent political transformation within Russia and its
foreign political isolation. Contrary to the rising influence of Russian private art
museums and foundations, international research has so far neglected this subject.
The proposed project aims to fill this gap. It will be based on representative case
studies and rare empirical data, drawn from (mainly) Russian primary and secondary
source material. It will rely on a broad comparative theoretical framework, elaborated
largely by contemporary museum studies as well as by cultural sociology and digital
studies. The results will be discussed in academic exchange and published.
The Malevich Society is pleased to announce its call for 2019 grant
applications. The Malevich Society is a not-for-profit organization based in New
York dedicated to advancing knowledge about the Russian artist Kazimir Malevich
and his work. In the belief that Malevich was a pioneer of modern art who should
be recognized for his key contributions to the history of Modernism, the Society
awards grants to encourage research, writing, and other activities relating to his
25
history and memory. The Society welcomes applications from scholars of any
nationality and at various stages of their career. Graduate students are welcome
to apply to the Society’s grants after completing at least one year of dissertation
research. Proposed projects should increase the understanding of Malevich and his
work, or augment historical, biographical, or artistic information about Malevich
and/or his artistic legacy. The Society also supports translations and the
publication of relevant texts. Application forms and instructions may be
