Mathematical Models for the Determination of Archaeological Potential2014 •
The Department of Archaeological Science of Pisa University is undertaking the MAPPA project in which archaeologists, geologists, mathematicians study predictive modelling tools applied to the archaeological potential of an urban area. Since the archaeological potential represents the probability that a more or less significant archaeological stratification is preserved, an analogy arose between the criteria used for attributing archaeological potential and those used for assigning importance to web pages by search engines. The key issue of the archaeological interpretation process is the identification of the relations that exist among finds, in spatial and functional terms. So different findings could strengthen or weaken the archaeological potential. Page rank algorithms are based on the same criteria: each web page attributes importance to the pages it links to and receives importance from the pages it receives a link from. This paper discusses a mathematical model of the archaeological potential based on page rank.

The development of a traditional urban Archaeological Map, an essential tool to provide a synoptic framework of the knowledge acquired so far, implies the idea of a final product and by now, for this very same reason, it can be considered outdated. It must give way to a far more complex analysis and to the elaboration of a tool useful not only to map the existing phenomena, but also for the study of the land transformation history. The goal is to analyze and then elaborate potential new knowledge based on the predictability of interred resources. Such an approach is in perfect harmony with Preventive Archaeology’s latest rules and aims to overcome the concept of “Map of Risk” in favour of a “Map of Archaeological Potential”. This will allow: the organization of the urban planning and building choices; the minimization of the archaeological site investigations carried out in an emergency; reduced damage to the public economy. At the same time, it will foster the planning of scientific research and help to conceive the buried archaeological heritage as a resource. The present project proposes the elaboration of the first archaeological map of the city of Enna through GIS, an instrument which proved to be ideal, especially for the purpose of the difficult reconstruction of ancient urban topography and, therefore, of an assessment of potential buried archaeological sites.

Like many other Italian cities, Pisa is a settlement that goes well back into history. Its subsurface conceals the remains of walls, floors, tombs and roads, as well as the fragments of tiles, vases, lamps and sculptures: briefly, the more or less solid traces of the lives of the people who have inhabited the city over its almost three thousand years of history. By studying the city’s archaeological artefacts and its pollen, coal and human/animal bone remains and by analysing the area’s geological and geomorphological features and its resources, it is possible to reconstruct the landscape, or better the landscapes, that have evolved over time and have influenced the city’s economic and cultural development, and in turn have been influenced by them. The ground on which we walk, build and live today is an extraordinary palimpsest where uncountable traces that have been left by our predecessors evolve, merge and overlap. Yet since these traces lie under the ground, the vitally importan...

The Gallic invasion of Greece in 280/279 BC left a deep mark in the collective memory of the Greeks. From then on, they represented the Celts as the stereotypical 'barbarians'-primitive, wild, violent and without any culture of their own. As the newcomers had established permanent kingdoms in Thrace and Phrygia, however, both sides had to learn how to deal with each other. The paper asks how the rulers of the Galatians on both sides of the Bosporus handled this challenge and how this influenced their own identity. To go beyond existing research, the analysis draws both on the literary Greek sources and the coinage which the Eastern Celts started to produce in the 3 rd century BC. It will be shown that the Galatian elites quickly adapted to the political practices of the Hellenistic world and confidently asserted their own place within it, mixing their own customs with Greek and local (Thracian, Anatolian) elements to create a unique blend of identity.

Starting with the early 1970s, following several visits of Nicolae Ceausescu in African countries and the signing of trade, economic and cultural aid agreements with these countries, the presence of African students has become increasingly visible in Romania. For almost twenty years, until the end of the regime in December 1989, their number, countries of origin and the choice of subjects studied have varied significantly for political or cultural reasons, but also due to the transformations of the international market of higher education. Following a work of documentation and statistical analysis in this article presents the development of relations between Romania and African countries since their beginning of these relations and particularly between 1970 and 1990. The increasing number of African students confirmed the internationalization of higher education in communist countries and yet a more significant presence of Romania in African states.
