This paper examines the effects of gender, age, and income on the willingness to pay (WTP) for music downloads. The examination is based on an online survey of 1 330 Finnish consumers conducted in June 2010. The analysis of the survey data follows a two-phase strategy. In the first phase, the effects of the explanatory variables on the consumers’ unwillingness to pay (UWTP) for album and track downloads are examined by using contingency tables and the Pearson’s χ 2 tests of independence. In the second phase, the effects of the explanatory variables on the consumers’ actual WTP for album and track downloads are examined by using one-way analysis of variance (1-ANOVA) and post-hoc multiple comparisons. The results of the analysis suggest that there are several statistically significant differences in the WTP for albums and tracks between the examined consumer segments. These findings and their implications should be taken into consideration in the future business models of music downl...
Online music streaming services have become popular in listening to music. Most online music streaming services employ the freemium business model. The specific gratifications from online music streaming are not well understood. Moreover, research examining the freemium model from a user experience perspective remains scant. We employ uses and gratifications theory and examine four gratifications, namely ubiquity, social connectivity, discovering new music, and enjoyment, as the predictors of continuance intention. We examine the differences in these gratifications between the basic and premium users with data from 374 Spotify users. The results demonstrate that enjoyment, discovering new music, and ubiquity, are the main drivers of the continuance intention. Interestingly, social connectivity has no effect on continuance intention. Furthermore, premium users experience higher levels of enjoyment and ubiquity than the non-paying basic users. Finally, enjoyment is the only predictor of continuance intention among basic users, but has no effect among premium users.

The Internet is an incredible technology, offering users a vast choice of new songs and catalogue that can be browsed, streamed or bought online. This paper aims to provide an explanation of factors influencing purchase intention of early adopters towards online music. An empirical survey was used to test the hypotheses. Data were collected from a total of 200 questionnaires distributed to early adopters of online music and were analysed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via the Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS 16) computer program. Results enumerate that perceived ease of use emerges as the important factor which affects perceived value among the respondents followed by perceived playfulness. Perceived value has the only significant impact on the purchase intentions towards online music. The paper rounds off with conclusions and an agenda for future research in this area.

The ongoing development of the digital music ecosystem has fostered a proliferation of products. In this study our aim was to address the digital aspects of physical music products. We analyzed data collected via a survey, using a research model based on an enhanced version of the theory of reasoned action, into which we integrated the following: intangibility attributes of perceived risk, accessibility, and predicted risk; price, range, and trialability as attributes that define the types of digital product; and the entertainment attributes of anticipation of customers' needs and perceived playfulness. Results indicated that consumers' attitude and intention were influenced mainly by product range and, simultaneously, that their decision to buy digital music was influenced by attitude and subjective norms. The results suggest that as trialability had a nonsignificant impact on consumer intention and attitude, consumers' perceived risk may be lowered by reducing the cost...

Piracy is a problem that has been faced by various companies, one of which is music service software. Even though piracy gives a benefit to consumers, the losses obtained by the producer cannot be ignored. To overcome these problems, there are music services that can provide services easily and cheaply for consumers, commonly called the Subscription Based Music Service (SBMS). Although there is a service that can replace pirated products (SBMS), there is no guarantee that consumers will use it. This study aims to determine the factors that influence consumers in using SBMS music services. To achieve that, the Structural Equation Modeling method is used with AMOS software. The research was conducted in two countries, Indonesia and Germany with the aim to find out whether or not different countries affect consumer behavior. From the results of research in Indonesian and German respondents, the most influencing factor in the desire to use SBMS is the interest in the application. It can...
Purpose – This paper analyzes consumers’ attitudes and behaviors towards online piracy and their willingness to try subscription-based music services. The objective is to develop and test an attitude-intention model which includes ethical considerations in consumers’ decision making process regarding music consumption. Design/methodology/approach – The study analyzes 505 consumer questionnaires using a structural equations model. Findings – Attitude toward online piracy is positively determined by economic and hedonic benefits and negatively by moral judgment. A favorable attitude toward online piracy, in turn, negatively influences consumers’ willingness to try subscription-based music services, which is also directly determined by their interest and involvement with the services themselves. Research limitations/implications – The limitations of the paper are linked mainly to the adapted scales, to the analysis of just two subscription-based music services (Napster and Spotify) and to the fact that all respondents came from one country. Practical implications – The results call for a greater commitment by music industry actors to educate consumers about the consequences and implications of online music piracy, while also stressing the value added and hedonic benefits offered by subscription-based music services. Originality/value – This paper is the first to focus on consumers’ propensity toward online piracy and their willingness to try subscription-based music services as a possible alternative to the phenomenon, through the development and test of an attitude-intention model that includes ethical considerations.

Halttunen, Veikko Consumer Behavior in Digital Era – General Aspects and Findings of Empirical Studies on Digital Music with a Retrospective Discussion Jyväskylä: University of Jyväskylä, 2016, 70 p. (Jyväskylä Studies in Computing. ISSN 1456-5390; 235) ISBN 978-951-39-6641-6 (nid.) ISBN 978-951-39-6642-3 (PDF) Digitization of products and processes has changed consumer behavior in several ways. Changes can be found not only in human actions but also in attitudes and ethics. The music industry has been a pioneer in digitized societies. In the new millennium it has also faced the downsides of the development: digital piracy and, as a consequence of it, declining revenues. These threats are not limited to the music industry but concern many other sectors whose products can be digitized. The mainstream of previous and contemporary IS/IT research has been optimistic and emphasized the positive impacts of digitalization. Those who have considered the negative impacts, such as the consequ...
