This paper seeks to answer the following questions: 1) Were these authors of the biblical books operating on their own with a possible chauvinist agenda, or did God participate in the writing? In other words, is the Bible and its teachings on gender roles (as well as on many other subjects) the words of men or the words of God? 2) Does God have a gender, and is God a “He”? 3) Do the biblical views of male and female nature correspond to the way that men and women actually are? 4) What is God’s attitude toward LGBTQ+? 5) Are the gender roles and gender-related teachings presented in the Bible applicable to contemporary society, or do they need to be altered or possibly abandoned?

This article discusses how gender theory might contribute to new Roman Catholic readings of Genesis 1–3 in terms of Trinitarian anthropology, gender, and sexual and maternal embodiment. Emphasizing that her Roman Catholic perspective is intended to sit alongside rather than displace Jewish interpretations, Beattie argues that papal teachings about gender and sexual difference are based on flawed interpretations of Genesis. Reading through “the lenses of gender,” in engagement with gendered studies of the Hebrew text (primarily by Phyllis Trible, Ziony Zevit and Marc Brettler), she explores the diversity of Hebrew terms used to describe the pri-mordial human creatures and the semantic fluidity of these terms. She describes this task as “reading out” of scripture. She then moves to a process of “reading in,” first by way of an anthropology that unsettles the stable identity of the gendered individual through the interpersonal dynamics of the Trinity. The primary passages in the Bible that set off human beings as distinct from the rest of creation, including Animalia, are those in the creation narrative. Specifically, Gen 1:26-28 (and 5:1-3) describe the Creator's blueprint for humanity. Consider that: 1.) the structure of these lines, 2.) their placement within the larger narrative, 3.) the expression of the Creator's unique design interest, and 4.) the larger portion of space within which these verses are situated, sets them off not only in terms of content, but visually and structurally from the rest of the narrative. This is done purposely-to communicate something unique about the object of the Creator's interest. Such observations are not new. However, these structural features have not received the careful attention they warrant from evangelical scholars. Even more, new analysis is especially crucial in view of current cultural, theological, practical, and ecclesiastical concerns for which these verses provide clear and important bearing.

It is the view of most people who claim the authoritative nature of the Bible that, women’s assignedsecondary status in relation to men is ordained and supported in the Bible. Many have quoted differenttexts of the holy writ to support their culturally-biased position on issue of gender equality. Most oftenviews in respect to gender issues are culturally-based and interpreted rather than divinely-based andinterpreted. There is therefore the need to look back at Jesus’ words, “But at the beginning of creationGod 'made them male and female.” (Matt 19:4; Mark 10:6). The two accounts in the Book of Genesis bythe Priestly and Yahwistic strands give a complimentary account of the creation of humankind (bothmale and female) in the image and likeness of God and their creation from a single stock (<d*ao )* who wasnot a male gender. At a cursory reading of the creation accounts, one will tend to see <d„`a*h³ as the malegender, but looking at the Hebrew text more closely it will be n...
