This paper investigated "Between Religion and Agriculture: A Roadmap to Revamping Nigeria's Economy." Religion is meant to affect all facets of life both at the individual and community levels. This applies equally to the economy of nations including Nigeria as a sovereign state. Petroleum which has been Nigeria's mainstay economically over the past five decades has proved to be not a sustainable means of income to the country in recent times. With the fluctuation in oil price with its attendant nose-diving, Nigeria is bound to have a rethink over her means of economic stay. This informs the thrust of this paper which looks at revamping Nigeria's economy from a religious perspective. Using the creation accounts in Genesis Chapter one and two, this paper which looks at the original divine mandate given to humanity in the days of creation; it concludes that this economic mandate was agriculturally based. Hence, this paper, using the hermeneutical approach to the ...

This paper investigated "The Parable of the Talents and Economic Management: Lessons for the Nigerian Nation." The subject matter of economic management in Africa in general and Nigeria, in particular, is one that concerns nearly every discipline, and which has inevitably lent itself to much pontification by economist and non-economist alike. Nigeria evolved as a nation-state in 1914 due to the amalgamation of diverse independent nationstates by the British under Lord Frederick Lugard. Since then, it has evolved different economic principles, especially with the discovery of oil in Oloibiri. Historically, the Nigerian economy showed early signs of growth but is currently in a state of recession irrespective of all the economic policies by different administrations. This is contingent on mismanagement of the country's economic and human resources. The main issue that should be in the mind of researchers now is not the inevitability of recession, but its cure and how to ...

It is the view of most people who claim the authoritative nature of the Bible that, women’s assignedsecondary status in relation to men is ordained and supported in the Bible. Many have quoted differenttexts of the holy writ to support their culturally-biased position on issue of gender equality. Most oftenviews in respect to gender issues are culturally-based and interpreted rather than divinely-based andinterpreted. There is therefore the need to look back at Jesus’ words, “But at the beginning of creationGod 'made them male and female.” (Matt 19:4; Mark 10:6). The two accounts in the Book of Genesis bythe Priestly and Yahwistic strands give a complimentary account of the creation of humankind (bothmale and female) in the image and likeness of God and their creation from a single stock (<d*ao )* who wasnot a male gender. At a cursory reading of the creation accounts, one will tend to see <d„`a*h³ as the malegender, but looking at the Hebrew text more closely it will be n...

Prosperity gospel is increasingly becoming a salient feature of Christianity in contemporary societies and especially on the African continent. Many consider it a supernatural alternative offering existential hope amidst insecurities of present life, rather than eschatological heavenly life yet to come. Its popularity is premised on the fact that the doctrine presents itself as holding the key to material prosperity, as well as the promise to provide followers with the weapons to overcome witchcraft, demonic forces and other malignant spirits through the power of the Holy Spirit. Drawing upon an extensive contemporary research on prosperity doctrine and based on content analysis, this chapter examines prosperity teachings and claims and identifies ethical issues that relate to the doctrine. Findings reveal that what makes prosperity gospel unique among religions is its overt promise of temporal, material rewards. In the absence of “natural” opportunity, prosperity gospel offers a su...

Old Testament studies have posed a lot of challenges to scholarship. They made people like Marcion read it with a pen-knife frame having in mind to cut off those texts of ‘horror' which present the Old Testament God as a wicked God who lacks compassion and the spirit of benevolence. This monstrous presentation of the Old Testament God has propelled some scholars like Pail Copan to ask, is the God (of the Old Testament) a moral or monster? This view of the Old Testament God is occasioned by the challenges involved in the studying of the Old Testament as an ordinary literary work, historical work, archaeological work, or a theological document. Viewing this canon from a theological perspective leads one to reading it from a religious perspective. This brings to the fore studying the religion of the Old Testament from a phenomenological perspective with an eye specifically on the concept of the Old Testament God. From a phenomenological perspective, it shows that the theistic conce...

The Concept of Atonement has been an old concept in the biblical world. The Old Testament speaks of it using mainly the Hebrew word כפר (kphr), with its attendant various implications. This concept wasn’t alien in the Greco-Roman world which formed part of the New Testament background. The New Testament writers pushed the concept of atonement beyond the level of animal sacrifice in the Old Testament, and the gods allowing themselves to be reconciled to sinful humanity in the Greco-Roman religious context, to the point of Jesus Christ being viewed as the Lamb of God, i.e. both the sacrificial lamb and the priest that offers the sacrifice. In this way, Christ is presented both as the offering and the offeror. The New Testament uses two main Greek words καταλλαγή/ (katallage) and ἱλασμός (hilasmos) in driving home this important concept which stems from God’s love towards the creation and results in forgiveness, restoration of estranged relationship, maintenance of divine justice and e...

This paper investigates “Divorce: Causes and Effects on Children.” Worthy of note is that the fact that, divorce is not an uncommon experience in human history. It is experienced by couples irrespective of their social, religious, academic, political, economic, etc. status. One of the most hit in the saga of divorce are children born into the wedlock where divorce is experienced. The effects of this divorce on children are most often not well considered by the parents who embark on taking the status of divorcees. This becomes the onus of this paper using sociological and psychoanalytical approaches to the study of human institutions to study these effects on children, though not without looking at the causes of divorce. The paper reveals that the effects of divorce on children often are emotional, psychological, economical and religious spheres among others and recommends ways in which these effects can be minimized among children.

The world today is full of innumerable uncertainties plaguing humanity. There seem to be a growing concern for the future of the world as various natural phenomena such as earthquake, tsunami, flood, draught, famine and war takes its toll on humankind. Suffering is now on the increase even among the redeemed of the Lord. Many scientists and environmentalists are advocating for the reduction of carbon emission as solution to the perceived climate change. In the midst of these uncertainties hope in the Sovereign, Omnipotent, Omniscient and Immutable God become the only sine-qua-non and the panacea for survival and continued existence. Being a literary research, the paper adopted the qualitative analytical research methodology in its approach and examined the necessity of hope as it pertained to mankind in the midst of suffering. In recommendation, it among others, advocated that a life without hope will eventually fall into despair or retires into status quo of the society. The paper ...

This paper investigates “A Feminist Interpretation and Reconstruction of John 7:53-8:11 in the light violence Against Women and its Implications Today.” This comes on the heels of the fact that violence against women is not only a fact of the contemporary times but was there in the days of Jesus Christ. The paper using two major theories of Feminist hermeneutics, especially the Hermeneutics of Recounting Tales of Terror in Memoriam and the Hermeneutic of Documenting Cases Against Women in the Bible and social feminism theories of Radical Feminism and Liberal Feminism. This work brought to the fore that in most interpretation of John 7:53-8:11, the emphasis has been on forgiveness of sin and the issue of ὁ ἀναμάρτητος (that is one without sin) without any note about the andriarchal system of which the „adulterous‟ woman was a victim of. This paper which used the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) as its preferred translation because of its gender sensitivity arrived at the conclusio...

The marriage institution with its complexity is not exempted from conflict. In the world where emphasis is on conflict resolution, the Efik people speak of marital conflict prevention more than conflict resolution and management. Marital conflict if not prevented or resolved can become inimical to both present and future generation apart from its fire engulfing the entire community. Though female circumcision (which is associated with Nkuho) has been abolished, it is the opinion of this chapter that the educational spirit behind this institution is still a veritable too in preventing marital conflict. The chapter made use of ethno-methodological approach with content analysis to aver that in preventing marital conflict among Efik people, Nkuho institution can be a veritable tool of conflict prevention and peace building. This work has shown that Nkuho institution has something positive to offer to the modern world, especially as it concerns marital conflict prevention.

This paper investigates “Biblical Deborah and Mary Mitchell Slessor – A Comparison in Time and Space and Lessons for Contemporary Africa.” Worthy of note is the fact that, for some of the religions of the world women are a problem; from time immemorial they have been subordinate to men, second-class in the family, politics and business, with limited rights and even limited participation in worship. This was not different from the epochs of both biblical Deborah (Judges 4-5) and Mary Mitchell Slessor, the White Queen of Okoyong. In the time where patriarchy was the rule of the day, there arose two women at different places, times yet with similar circumstances to salvage the people and bring about God’s mission to the human race. Though both operated within the context of the mission of the church, theirs was missio dei not missio ecclesia, because in their age, missio ecclesia used more of patriarchal instruments while mission dei was/is involve in using human and the entire inhabit...
