The great trends in social and economic changes that were intensified in the 90s, induced by western capitalism’s evolution of productive and organizational structures, encouraged new forms of labor organization, more “flexible” and in line with the fluctuations of market demand. This “flexibility” became an ethos of contemporary action inasmuch as its presence in economic relations affected not only the relations of and at work, but was extended to social relations in a broader sense. The changes also affected professional systems (of which Law is deemed to be an iconic example) that claim their influence by means of reasoning based on the independence of their work. Hence, the intensification and globalization of competition, the adoption of organizational formats and forms of labor organization similar to those in corporations, and a market-driven mentality, deviate from the traditional professional reasoning. The large law firms in Brazil comply with this trend and have adapted to the ever more complex and profitable requirements of globalized customers. This paper was prepared as a qualitative survey in order to detect and understand the impacts of the new forms of labor organization in corporate law activities on circumstances and relations at work and otherwise, of lawyers that are active in the most representative Law Firms in the country. The results show that highly qualified professionals who work in cross-functional teams of specialized cells, and who consider their work a source of satisfaction owing to the constant challenge and learning experience, in addition to the financial and social rewards of belonging to prestigious firms, also live in situations of great stress owing to the high work load, uncertainty as to their professional outlook, highly competitive internal and external environments, and customer requirements and aggressiveness. This poses a dilemma in the light of the dedication to the profession, with its taxing requirements and the sensation that something is being lost in personal life. However, they tend to adapt to these conflicts and accept them as natural in the quest for professional success.
