In this paper we present persuasive evidences of fact that mitten gauntlets were in use among the population of medieval Novgorod. The attribution of previously published archaeological finds is revised. It is suggested that some gauntlets found in the archaeological strata of Veliky Novgorod had been imported. Dating of some Novgorodian finds allows us to revise our view on the time of existence of similar finds in Western Europe.

The article considers possibility of partial reconstruction of the Old Russian costume decor and textile production techniques in Pskov basing on the bracelet ornaments. The authors review the structure of Pskov bracelet ornament body and present a complex hypothesis about textile technologies and decor range indicated by sources. All components of the hypothesis have been tested experimentally using both braiding and weaving craft techniques and Russian and European medieval clothing item decoration comparative analysis method.
A HELMET DETAIL FROM PLISKA The article is devoted to the detail of a helmet found in the ancient capital of Bulgaria, Pliska, when excavating the territory of the Inner city near the so-called “boyar’s dwelling” (fig. 1). The find is dated supposedly to the end of the 10th – the first half of the 11th centuries. The fitting is in the form of a four-petalled rosette (3.1 × 3.1 cm) and it is cast of a copper-based alloy. In the center of the rossette is a conical spike, about 0.7 cm high. The outer surface of the fitting is covered with a floral pattern. A. N. Kirpichnikov defined similar cast fittings as overhead parts on the side plates of Type II helmets, distributed at the turn of the 1st and 2nd millennia AD in the territory of Ancient Russia, Poland and Prussia. All side fittings known prior to A.N. Kirpichnikov’s publication were made of iron and on the front side they were covered with silver, laid on a specially prepared surface (fig. 2). In total, it was possible to collect information on 25 finds of molded overhead fitting, which are divided into two variants (fig. 5). 22 items of the overlays of variant 2 fully coincide with the find from Pliska. In three cases, these plaques were found together with gilded helmets of a spherical shape, sometimes called helmets of the “type Black Grave” (fig. 3, 4). Helmets of this type appeared in the second half of the 10th century and continued to exist in the 11th century, which coincides with the proposed dating of the find from Pliska. The helmet, decorated with such fittings, could get to Bulgaria during the campaign of Prince Svyatoslav in 968–969, but later penetration unrelated to the Russian troops (druzhina) is not excluded, especially taken into account the rather wide spread of the helmets of this type in Eastern Europe.
The author attempts to analyze the pole arms, which was used in the Genoese Crimean colony of the local garrison and militia in the late Middle Ages (XIV-XV cc.). In-depth analysis of the Ligurian medieval texts presented detailed description of different types of spears, halberds and darts. Traced the evolutionary changes in the development of polearms and its features. These written sources, the author added the description of archaeological finds and pictorial sources. The findings underscored the important role of this type of weaponry in the defense doctrine of the colonies.
The author examines scientific debate about Roman parade armour. So far, no criteria for definition of the Roman parade armament have been developed, therefore parade armament is often confused with equipment for hippika gymnasia. Some researchers argue that there was no parade armament in the Roman army and a soldier's parade equipment was simply his full outfit. However, the author's analysis of Herodian's text and some iconographic sources indicate that it is possible to talk about some elements of military equipment used in solemn processions (pompa). During parades, a soldier's full outfit was used, but it was supplemented with various marks of distinction, military awards, some special items of equipment, such as a short ceremonial sword of Praetorians as described by Herodian, and with expensive pieces of military equipment that were impractical to use in combat. However, at the parade these items were indispensable as indicators of the owner's status.
