19th Century Arabic Literature

Digteren, forfatteren, den satiriske og politiske teaterinstruktør Yaqub Sanua (1839-1912) vækker stadig til debat og har i dag samme kultstatus som digteren Khalil Gibran. Artiklen stiller spørgsmålstegn ved Sanua som politisk dissident, eller om han snarere var tæt forbundet med den politiske elite?

Rifā'a Rāfi' al-Ṭahṭāwī (1801-1873) is a public figure known in all the aspects of life in 19^th century Middle East. In a previous study about the history of translation in the Arab World during the 19^th century I was able to prove that al-Ṭahṭāwī started and led a school of translation, not of languages. This time I try to challenge a very basic thing that is commonly known about al-Ṭahṭāwī. It is said that he travelled to France in the first Egyptian mission to study abroad as 'Imām and preacher. I will count on re-reading his book about the trip and other sources which were published during his life and which came earlier than the famous sources.

في كتابه: "تعرية الكلمات: قوائم الشدياق الفكرية كنقد ثقافي واجتماعي في القرن التاسع عشر" (2019)، يدرس الباحث كريستيان يونجه الكلمات وطريقة استخدام اللغة في فترة  النهضة العربية في القرن التاسع عشر. من خلال دراسة "الساق على الساق"، يضع يونجه نفسه في جيل جديد من الباحثين الغربيين الذين يعيدون فحص الشخصيات الرئيسية في تلك المرحلة المحورية من التاريخ العربي. وفي هذه الدراسة، يتعمق يونجه في مدى التعقيد اللغوي والأدبي لهذا العمل من خلال التركيز على أفكاره الرئيسية.

This paper reads food and body in al-Shidyaq's "al-Saq" from the perspective of soma theories (Richard Shusterman and Hermann Schmitz). It argues that the consumption of food and the body's somatic expression are complex negotiations of nineteenth century Arab and European communities in al-Shidyaq travellogue.
