73 Sects

This article deals with the influence of the "73 sects ḥadīth," which states that Muslims will be separated into 73 sects, when Jews had 71 and Christians had 72 sects, and that only one of them will be saved whereas the others will go to Hell, on, particularly, Islamic heresiographical works written to examine and classify theological sects and their beliefs in the Islamic community from the beginning. This ḥadīth has had a crucial and decisive role in those works' form and way to study the sects as well as their authors' perception of their own sect and the other sects. Studying the influence, not the authenticity, of the 73 sects ḥadīth, the article first mentions the famous narration of the ḥadīth, noting other different narrative versions; then points out some questions that would be arisen in one’s mind about the implication of the ḥadīth. The article mainly discusses the attitudes of Muslim heresiographers towards 73 sects ḥadīth and describes by placing them in main three categories: ‘Those who consider the 73 sects ḥadīth authentic,’ ‘Those who do not con- sider the 73 sects ḥadīth authentic,’ and ‘Those who do not take notice of the 73 sects ḥadīth.’ Considering the ḥadīth authentic, most of heresiographers have different views about the meaning of the number 73 mentioned in the ḥadīth. Some thinks that the number is for a fact and, accordingly, divides the sects to reach up 73 with different formulas and some are of the opinion that the number is a metaphor and a mere allusion on abundance as a common usage in the Arabic language and, accordingly, do not limit the number of the sects to 73. The article ends up with a discussion of the problems of the consideration of the 73 sects ḥadīth a measure for studying and classifying theological groups.

“Doğu Hanefî Fırak Geleneği” tabiri, Doğu İslam dünyasında (Horasan ve Mâverâünnehr) Hanefî ulema tarafından itikâdî fırkaları tasnif ederken ‘73 fırka hadisi’ni ve hadiste geçen 73 rakamını esas almak suretiyle kurtuluşa eren fırka hariç tutulduğunda geriye kalan 72 fırkaya her biri 12’şer alt koldan oluşan 6 sapkın ana fırka belirlemek suretiyle (6x12=72) formülü ile ulaşan fırak türü eserlerin oluşturduğu literatürü ifade etmektedir. Elimize ulaşan en erken örneği Ebû Mutî Mekhûl b. el-Fadl en-Nesefî’nin (ö. 318/930) er-Redd alâ ehli’l-bida’ı olan bu gelenek, Doğu Hanefî ulemanın batıya göçüyle Suriye, Mısır gibi diğer İslam bölgelerinde de tanınmış, hatta Osmanlı döneminde en çok tercih edilen fırka tasnif geleneklerinden biri olmuştur. Tasnifin neredeyse sadece Hanefî ulema tarafından benimsenmesi tasnifin kaynağının Ebû Hanîfe ile irtibatlı olma ihtimalini akla getirmektedir. Nitekim meşhur Osmanlı âlimi Birgivî’ye (ö. 981/1573) nispet edilen Tuhfetü’l-müsterşidîn isimli fırak risalesinde 6x12’lik tasnif Ebû Hanîfe’ye isnat edilmiştir. Bu bilginin nispeten oldukça geç bir tarihte yaşamış birine nispet edilen bir eserde veriliyor olması tasnifin Ebû Hanîfe ile irtibatlandırılmasının bir realiteye işaret etmekten ziyade tasnifi mezhep imamı ile ilintilendirerek meşruiyet zemini kazandırma çabası olarak görülmesine sebebiyet vermektedir. Ancak yine de tasnifin neredeyse yalnızca Hanefî âlimlerce tercih edilmesi Hanefî kimlikle veya Ebû Hanîfe ile bir şekilde irtibatlandırılmasını gerekli kılmaktadır. Üstelik tasnifin kullanıldığı özellikle erken dönem bazı eserlerde Ehl-i Sünnet ve Cemaat’in ne olduğu şeklindeki soruya Ebû Hanîfe’nin “ne nasb ne rafz, ne cebr ne kader, ne teşbih ne ta’tîl” şeklinde cevap verdiğini aktaran rivayetin geleneğin bazı eserlerindeki 6x12’lik tasnifte yer alan ana fırkaların kimlikleri (Nasıbiyye/Haruriyye-Rafıziyye, Cebriyye-Kaderiyye, Müşebbihe-Muattıla) ile uyuşması tasnifin Ebû Hanîfe ile irtibatlı olduğu veya sonradan Hanefî ulema tarafından irtibatlandırıldığı izlenimini vermekte ve Tuhfetü’l-müsterşidîn’de tasnif ile Ebû Hanîfe arasında kurulan ilişkinin bir gerçekliğinin olabileceği ihtimalini ciddiye almayı gerekli kılmaktadır. Bu tebliğ Doğu Hanefî Fırak Geleneğinin Ebû Hanife ile irtibatlandırılmasının imkânını sorgulayarak geleneğin gelecekte gün yüzüne çıkarılabilecek örnekleriyle doğrulamasının yapılabileceği birtakım tezler ileri sürmektedir.

This article deals with the questions that would be arisen in one’s mind about the implication of the “73 sects hadith” which states that Muslims  will be separated into 73 sects, when Jews had 71, and Christians had 72 sects and that only one of them will be saved whereas the others will go to the Hell. It examines, too, the influence of the hadith on Islamic heresiographical works as to both their content and form, and on thinking of writers of these works. In addition, the attitudes of these writers towards the hadith is described by placing them in categories.

Sufi orders played important role to propagate Islam among nomads in
Central Asia, especially among Kyrgyz. At the same time the sufi orders were effective in constructing the understanding of Islam among Kyrgyz. The Ishqiya order was one them. The Ishqiya order built “langars” where they visited and spread its doctrine among population. The research focused on the activities of Ishqiya order among Kyrgyz.

The authors who examines sects dealt with the sects either in a specific book on the subject or in a chapter of other books. In Othman al-Kirmani al-Iraqi as well, handled in the last part of his work Kanz al-Khafi, the sects that had come into existence until his time. However, it is understood that this part which is related to the sects had been copied independently as Firaqu’l-Muftariqa in the process of time. In this article, some information about Kanz al-Khafi was given and Firaqu’l-Muftariqa as a source of Islamic sects was examined and evaluated in terms of its method, form, content and style.

The tradition of ‘division’ that says that the Islamic Ummah will divide into seventy three sects and only one of them will be saved is one of the remarkable accounts that marked the tradition of Islamic thought and culture. Taking into consideration the place of this hadith in Islamic tradition, this study aims at identifying all the versions of it, and at studying their value with regard to hadith criticism, stages of their transmission and the historical contexts in which they are related.
In the introductory chapter, the various interpretations of the hadith in the course of history have been dealt with in general. In this context, the arguments of those who accepted and rejected the hadith of ‘division’ have been discussed.
In the first chapter, the accounts concerning the hadith in the Sunnite, Shiite, Mutazilite and Kharijite/Ibadite literature have been examined in detail. The literature consulted includes hadith works as well as doctrinal, theological and historical sources of the said schools.
In the second chapter, the isnads of the hadith have been classified according to their sahaba narrators and each group of isnads has been examined in terms of jarh-ta‘dil critique. In this context, special attention was paid to the relationship between transmitters and textual variations during the transmission of hadith. I have reached the conclusion that identifying the religious, political and ideological identities of the transmitters and geographical origin and distribution of a hadith help explain many of the differences between various versions of the hadith.
The third chapter includes a content analysis of the hadith focusing on the last part of the hadith, where the saved sect was mentioned. I have particularly traced the expression forms describing the saved group and different and ever-changing uses of concepts in various times and places, as well as historical context(s) of these text forms and attempted to identify the reasons for the emergence and transmission of particular versions. In this approach, I have regarded the isnads of the hadith as a part of the text, and have taken into consideration in my content analysis the identity of narrators, their religio-political affiliations and their addressees, and the periods and regions they lived in.

İslâm toplumunda ortaya çıkan itikadî ve siyasî fırkalara dair mâlûmatı toplamak, bu fırkalarla görüşlerini çeşitli şekillerde tasnif etmek ve kimi zaman 73 fırka hadisine referansla söz konusu rakamla uyumlu fırka listeleri oluşturmak hemen her fırkadan âlimin çok erken dönemlerden itibaren ilgileri arasında yer almıştır. Bu bağlamda Eş‘arî müelliflerin önemli bir yeri bulunmaktadır. Ana fırkalar ile bunların alt kollarının gerek kimlikleri gerekse de sayıları bakımından birbirinden farklılaşan çeşitli fırka tasniflerinin oluşturulduğu Eş’ari fırak geleneği içerisinde belli bir dönemden sonra özellikle bir fırka tasnifinin standartlaştığı ve çokça tekrar edildiği görülmektedir. Bu, Seyfeddîn el-Âmidî’nin Ebkâru’l-efkâr’ının son kısmında yer verdiği, aslında Abdülkâhir el-Bağdâdî’nin el-Fark beyne’l-fırak’ı ile Ebû’l-Feth eş-Şehristânî’nin el-Milel ve’n-nihal’inden çokça istifade etmekle birlikte kendi tasarrufları ile oluşturduğu tasnif olup sonraki dönemlerde sadece Eş‘arîler tarafından değil, diğer Sünnî grupların yanı sıra Şiî, İbâzî gibi Sünnî olmayan fırkaların mensubu müellifler tarafından da ve hususan işaret etmek gerekirse Osmanlı ulemâsınca en çok tekrar edilen fırka tasniflerinin başında gelmektedir. Bu durumun gerisinde ise Âmidî’nin bu tasnifini el-Mevâkıf isimli kelâm eserinin sonuna ek (tezyîl) olarak ve muhtasar bir şekilde ekleyen Adudüddîn el-Îcî bulunmaktadır. Böylece Îcî, Âmidî’nin fırka tasnifini muhtasar olarak nakletmek suretiyle aslında fırak literatürü açısından küçük ve önemsiz görünen, ancak gerek kendi ilmî şahsiyeti ve eserleri gerekse de Kirmânî ve Cürcânî gibi kudretli şârihleri vasıtasıyla “İslâm düşüncesi ve özellikle Osmanlı ilim anlayışı üzerinde kalıcı bir tesir bırakan” bir âlim karizmasıyla sonraki dönemin en çok tekrar ve tercih edilen bu tasnifin meşhur hâle gelmesine vesile olmakla etkili bir katkı yapmıştır.
