האמנות הפלסטית זיכתה את המאה ה־20 בשני עשורים שבהם היו פריצות האוונגרדיות ונופצו כללי היצירה המקובלים: שנות ה־20 הדאדאיות של מרסל דושאן ושנות ה־60, שבהן שלטו ההפשטה המינימליסטית והאמנות המושגית, שמחקו את הרגש והצבע ופרצו את מסגרת הציור. השלטת השכלתנות הרעיונית כמרכיב אמנותי הפכה את תהליך העבודה ליצירה בפני עצמה. כמו כן, להערכתי אין אפשרות להבין את המופשט המינימליסטי כמתחים צורניים וקומפוזיציוניים בלבד, אלא רק בזיקה לנשגב ובמשמעותו המושגית. מטבע הדברים, האמנות המושגית עוסקת ברעיון, באידיאל ובשגב ועניינה רק בספירות העליונות של החיים. שפתה גבוהה, והיא אינה יורדת לטריוויאליות של היום־יום ולחילוניות. אם נוסיף למושג גם את אמנות הגוף, שהפכה את הסובייקט לאובייקט, נקבל תמונת־מצב שממנה צמח המיצג במחצית השנייה של שנות ה־60. זוהי גם קרקע גידולו של המיצג הישראלי בראשית שנות ה־70. הרוצים להתעמק בסמיוטיקה של המיצג ולהבין את מהותו חייבים להבחין בתמורות שחלו בשדה האמנותי בין שנות ה־70 לראשית שנות ה־80.

In a climate riven by national insecurities, anti-immigration movements and competing visions of a post-Brexit future, this paper examines the contentious space multiculturalism has inhabited in 21st-century British choreography. It analyses acclaimed works by Akram Khan and Lloyd Newson to explore starkly differing perspectives on cultural diversity in the UK.  Khan’s contribution to the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony (Abide with Me) emphasised the nation’s post-imperialist and cosmopolitan profile. By contrast, Newson’s contemporaneous work Can We Talk about this? (2011/12) was highly critical of current models of multiculturalism and in particular attitudes towards Islam. This paper compares the two choreographies using a theoretical framework that draws on both political thought and dance analysis, to evaluate their contributions to debates around culture, tolerance and diasporic identities and illustrate the broader entanglement between British dance and contemporary politics.

In spite of the increased interconnectedness of today's world, brought about by globalization and, more recently, by the digital reconfiguration of our lives due to Covid-19, humankind is still-and paradoxically so-grappling with the legacy of colonial sovereignty. Stigmatization of Otherness has become a fad and labels are stitched with burning needles while we are being swept toward the edge of the whirling falls. New forms of intolerance are looming in the darkest corners of our seemingly civilized world and the door to the outer rings of this mental maze seems to have been boarded up, just like those of the shops during the pandemic. While pointing to the threats of Othering all that is unfamiliar to us, the present paper aims to articulate the strength that resides in the rhetorical portrayal of Otherness by some of the most prominent UK-based writers and artists today, whose stories can move even the most biased of 'readers'. Literature and the arts, I believe, are our last glimmer of hope, and redemption can only be attained through truth and the ancient Greeks' ideal of beautiful goodness ('kalokagathia').
