Purpose. Our aim is to identify the steps that librarians can take concerning altmetrics within the framework of the research support services offered by librarians. Design/Methodology/Approach. The current bibliography on altmetrics has been reviewed, especially that which refers to librarians. A survey has also been carried out of librarians of Spanish universities to find out their degree of involvement in the matter and the setting up of relevant initiatives. Findings. Librarians have an important role in the disseminating of altmetrics and in the training of using them in the best interests of their researchers' scientific publications. This role is also important as assessors for the administration in order to value these metrics in university processes, as well as their inclusion in catalogs, databases or repositories. Research limitations/implications. Limitations are the reduced size of the population of the surveys, especially their being limited to a single country. L...

Purpose The purpose of the study is to use a multidimensional perspective on the analysis of scholarly articles published in the top-tier Library and Information Science (LIS) journals. The relationships between the impact factors (Altmetric attention score [AAS], citation count and Mendeley readership) were analyzed, and reader profiles were characterized and studied.
Design/methodology/approach This paper examined citation count, AAS and Mendeley readership of the most cited articles published in the top-tier LIS journals – The Journal of Academic Librarianship, Government Information Quarterly and Library and Information Science Research. A total of 61 articles were analyzed. Data were recorded on an Excel spreadsheet and exported to the statistical software package SPSS 18.0 for Windows to perform the descriptive and correlation analysis.
Findings This study suggests that Mendeley readership and AAS could be used as supplemental measurements for assessing the impact of a publication or author in the LIS. AAS and Mendeley readership are positively correlated with citation count, and the correlation between Mendeley readership and citation count was stronger than AAS and citation count. Librarians are dominant readers of the top-tier LIS journals, followed by social sciences, computer science and arts and humanities professions.
Originality/value This study introduces two newly launched metrics for measuring the research impact factor and discusses how they correlated with citation count. Moreover, the study details the spectrum of Altmetric for discovering readership of LIS top-tier journals. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that presents the spectrum of AAS and Mendeley readership of the most cited articles published in top-tier of LIS journals. The study reveals an alternative way of measuring LIS publication’s impact factor that enables researchers, librarians, administrators, publishers and other stakeholders in LIS to assess the influence of a publication from another angle.

In Uganda, one of the fundamental issues the National Council for Higher Education considers when licensing and accrediting new universities are the quality of library services. Library services especially ability of accessing online journals and books depends on the quality of internet bandwidth provided to users. The challenge of the NCHE is that the policy is not comprehensive on bandwidth estimate that could be adopted as minimum requirement for university library online services.

In the world of scholarly publications the citation analysis is the standard tool for impact measurement. University faculty budgets even depend on the outcome of the citation scores. Nowadays more publications are published in the cloud on the web and are accessed and reviewed in a different way than before. The most common one is the ‘like’ function by Facebook and the ‘retweet’ function by Twitter. More and more ways of citing and measuring are used to develop a new view on quality and quantity of scientific papers and their impact. Students have a distinct preference for the easy traceable and (preferably free) accessible information to the traditional journal articles in databases or commercial repositories. But is altmetrics really new? Is it more than counting the likes from friends and the family? Are there positive features to this method in obtaining quick responses or objective results?
Can altmetrics, this new way of measuring, be a valid additional method for a governmental agency, to evaluate social impact of the government publications or is it just a hype? Can altmetrics change the management perspective in decision making?

Altmetrics is an alternative method to complement the traditional method to measure impact of scholarly articles in social web ecosystem. This paper aims to examine how the librarians can implement Altmetrics in their library so it can deliver high impact scholarly article. The method to reach the aim is by evaluation method. The study shows that (1) The librarian has an important role in disseminating, training as well as for administrative assessor of Altmetrics (2) The scholarly trends in publishing articles mostly use digital format with interactive dialog. It is marked by the increasing presence of the scholar in various social media platform which can build effective communication among researchers. (3) that social media have brought the activity of sharing and collaborating not only among researchers on the same field but also on the different field. (4) The impact of scholarly article on the social web can be seen from how many clicks, reads, shares, saves/downloads, discussions in a forum, adaptations, reviews of a scholarly article, etc.(5) To implement Altmetrics in the Library, the library will need to prepare (a) Altmetrics knowledge and skills for librarians (b) organization support (c) good willing to start (d) librarian assistantship to help writers or researchers to create scholarly article that has an impact. From Altmetrics, the scholar can (1) explore the impact of scholarly article; (2) manage the scholarly reputation. The result of this study can be a basic consideration for the librarians to develop their collection based on the impact of scholarly article and the requirement of users. Writer : Nuning Kurniasih
Is social impact measurement by altmetrics a valid method for governmental publications? The use of alternative metrics is a way to determine the social value and impact of publications.

This paper examines the presence of Library and Information Science articles in social media platforms by considering the top 100 highly socially cited articles from the Dimensions database. The study examines the association between major metrics. Data were collected from Dimensions.ai, Altmetrics.com, WoS, Google Scholar, and analyzed. The findings suggest that all the 100 LIS articles have got at least one mention from nine different social media platforms with increased attention from Mendeley and Twitter. The article "Objectivity and realms of explanation in academic journal articles concerning sex/gender: a comparison of Gender studies and the other social sciences" authored by Therese Soderlund et al., has been the top socially cited article in Dimensions with an altmetricss attention score of 684. The study found a weak positive correlation between social media citation with major citations from Web of Science (r=0.19), Google Scholar(r=0.18) and Dimensions(r=0.19). This is the first of its kind study to measure the social media attention of LIS articles based on the Dimensions dataset and the result gives more insights to LIS authors for evaluating the societal impact of their research using altmetricss indicators.
