Study of the relationship between mutagenicity and molecular structure for a data set of nitrogenous cyclic compounds is reported. A computerized SAR system (ADAPT) was utilized to classify a data set of 114 nitrogenous cyclic compounds with 19 molecular descriptors. All of the descriptors represented at least 10% of the compounds in the data sets. The average correct predictability of the data base was calculated to be 89% after evaluating 100 training/prediction subsets. The actual predictive ability of the discriminants generated by the ADAPT system was demonstrated by predicting the mutagenicity of structurally similar compounds not in the data set. Weight vectors generated in the pattern recognition programs were used to predict the bacterial mutagenicity of 10 compounds which were not included in the data set. The stereocontrolled synthesis of β-galactosyl-5-aza-sphinganines was accomplished with high efficiency by a novel and convergent strategy. The truncated β-galactosphinganine 5 was easily acylated with different long chains. A simple and efficient synthesis of a solid-supported thiol has been developed. Mercaptoacetic acid was first protected by the dimethoxytrityl group and then anchored to Wang resin through an ester bond. Deprotection of the thiol function led to resin-supported mercaptoacetic acid, a useful supported thiol reagent that can be used in the polymer-assisted solution-phase removal of nosyl (Ns) groups from the amino function of α-amino acids in peptide synthesis. One of the main criteria for the selection of a suitable solvent is the CO2 solubility capacity or CO2 loading. The objective of this work is to provide students and earlycareer scientists a detailed description of a titration-based experiment to measure the CO2 loading using simple and inexpensive volumetric and gravimetric lab apparatus. The performance of the method is corroborated by comparing the experimental uncertainty obtained during the determination of the CO2 concentration in test samples (in an absorption unit at lab scale) with reference values obtained by mass balance based on a certified gas analyser. The results indicate that CO2 loading values between the experimental method and the reference range from ±3 to 13%, which is in good agreement with other similar methods.

The synthesis of a variety of polycyclic quinolines is described. The target molecules were obtained in two steps by an initial reductive cyclization followed by another intramolecular cyclization in the allylamines afforded from either the acetates or allyl bromides of Baylis–Hillman adducts of 2-nitrobenzaldehydes and acrylonitrile. The two steps proceeded in one-pot for those substrates in which a formyl or hydroxy group reacted with the amino group of the 2-aminoquinoline in the second intramolecular cyclization. In contrast, a basic medium was necessary for the second intramolecular cyclization reaction in substrates in which an alkoxycarbonyl group and the amino group participated. A novel bridged binuclear Cu(II) complex with mixed ligands, di-μ-(2-aminopyridine(N,N′))-bis[(2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate)aquacopper(II)] tetrahydrate, formulated as [Cu(μ-ap)(dipic)(H2O)]2·4H2O (1) (dipic = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate, ap = 2-aminopyridine), has been synthesized and characterized by elemental, spectral (IR and UV–Vis.), thermal analysis, magnetic measurements and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The central Cu(II) ion resides on a centre of symmetry in a distorted square-pyramid coordination environment comprising of two N atoms, one from dipic and one from the ap ring, two carboxylate O atoms from dipic, and one O atom from water. Intermolecular N–H⋯O and O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π–π stacking interactions seem to be effective in the stabilization of the crystal structure. The free ligands and the complex were also evaluated for their antimicrobial and radical scavenging activities (DPPH = 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl hydrate) using in vitro microdilution methods. Antimicrobial screening of the free ligands and their complex showed that the free ligands and the complex possess antifungal activity against Candida sp.

The Duff reaction (HMTA, AcOH or TFA) was studied on substituted [6 + 5] heterocyclic compounds. This reaction provides a useful route to aldehydes for compounds bearing sensitive amide functions. It gives also access to tricyclic lactams of potential biological interest. The formation of an aminomethyl intermediate in the Duff reaction mechanism is unequivocally demonstrated.

Carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR) composite containing organic filler was fabricated on lab-scale, two-roll mill. The organic filler originated from the olive husk powder (OHP). The work has two aims. The first is the role of the OHP as a co-curing agent for XNBR vulcanizate based on the fact that it is a nitrogen-containing material; the second is the potential of the OHP as reinforcing filler. Therefore, the prepared samples were inspected with reference to their cure characteristics and mechanical properties. It has been found that the OHP was able to shorten the optimum cure time (t90) and enhance the state of cure (difference between the maximum torque MH and the minimum torque ML). It was noticed that the OHP addition has increased the minimum torque (ML), which is an indirect indication of increased viscosity of the vulcanizate. The cure behavior change was accompanied with a notable improvement in the mechanical properties of the composites as compared to the pristine counterpart. Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) was used to explore the possibility of any interactions between the filler and the matrix. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was carried out on the fabricated composites. The related parameters, such as the mechanical loss factor (tanδ and storage modulus (È), were reported.
