Participate in an international competition for a project in China, design a project for Dubai, build a school in the favellas of Brazil. Those are some of the challenges that firms in the fields of architecture, urban planning and construction must now face in a globalizing construction sector. However, the international context of construction shows different faces, ranging from prestige buildings designed by foreign “star” architects in
world-class cities, to emergency shelters produced by humanitarian international initiatives in rural areas in developing countries. For many, this context offers great commercial opportunities, but also risks and threats.

Participants from different countries working in foreign contexts are confronted with major challenges that range from cultural adaptation to contractual know-how. A careful understanding of organizational design and procurement is crucial in this context. The procurement strategies - that is, the initial decisions made by the client(s) to create the temporary multi-organization in charge of the project – can determine the success or failure of the initiatives.

This 2008 conference-workshop discusses these challenges and seeks to clarify the scope of and opportunities for construction projects in the international context. It focuses on the procurement-related aspects of international construction projects, and it opens the door to a wide range of subjects related to the performance of these initiatives.

The conference-workshop addresses the following issues:
• How to procure a building project abroad?
• How do architects participate in international construction?
• What are the main risks of international procurement? What are the main risks of working
abroad?
• Is there such a thing as a real international supply chain?
• What are the differences between local procurement and international procurement?
• What are the main opportunities for construction companies interested in working abroad?
• How must the relations between foreign organizations and local actors be established?

The aesthetic preoccupations of contemporary high-rise buildings —based on the tectonic tradition of the twentieth-century— often fail to acknowledge the true proportions of their ecological and social potential. As an alternative to the shortcomings of this trajectory, we are using thermodynamics as a framework to rethink the high-rise in an attempt to radically transform existing concepts and systems, methods and techniques.

A thermodynamic conception of high-rise construction presumes fundamentally different means and ends: biotech entities, that expand, fold or collapse in thermodynamic figurations. They react to the urban climate and social context while adapting to their environment through what might be called thermodynamic somatisms. These somatisms respond to physical and chemical principles that are found individually and collectively in all organic species. To move toward this new approach it is necessary to abandon established tectonic traditions in favor of biological and thermodynamic approaches. The evolution of the highrise demands academic institutions to reconstruct disciplinary knowledge according to the ecological scales of urban problems through experimentation with new design tools, ultimately aspiring towards a fuller experience of urban life.

This essay highlights the main characteristics of the architecture of the Welsh house and provides an analysis of the influences on its design over the centuries. The various terms involved in the field are clearly explained before the discussion is expanded, and pertinent examples are used of different forms of architecture in Wales and their locations, demonstrating effectively the factors that influenced design and its development over the years.

החל מהמאה ה-4 לסה"נ הפכה הנצרות לדת העיקרית בלבנט ולדת האימפריה בכלל. הביטוי הארכיאולוגי העיקרי של הדת הנוצרית הוא מבנה הכנסייה. מאות רבות של כנסיות מהתקופה הביזנטית נחקרו ונחפרו בלבנט מאז ראשית ימי המחקר הארכיאולוגי. מידע רב פורסם על הכנסיות בפרסומי חפירות, סינתזות נושאיות, וסקירות רחבות.
למרות המרחב הגיאוגרפי הגדול הכלול בדרום הלבנט, והחלוקה האזרחית (פרובינקיאלית) והכנסייתית, מעטים המחקרים שניסו לבדוק מאפיינים אזוריים בכנסיות, ובפרט על רקע של החלוקה הפרובינקיאלית.

לצורך בחינת שאלה זו נבחר תחום גיאוגרפי מובחן, אשר גבולו תחום בחלקו גם מבחינה דתית-תרבותית וגם מבחינה אזרחית: הגליל העליון. מ' אביעם הראה כי מזרח הגליל העליון היה תחום יהודי בתקופה הביזנטית, בעוד במערב הגליל העליון נמצאו כנסיות רבות. הגבול בין שני אזורים אלו חופף ברובו לגבול בין פרובינקיה פלסטינה לפרובינקיה פניקיה. מדרום נתחם האזור בבקעת בית הכרם. הגבול הצפוני של הגליל העליון עובר לאורך נחל הליטאני; אך בשל המידע המחקרי המועט מלבנון דהיום, עבודה זו תחומה מצפון בגבול הבין-לאומי. אביעם וחוקרים אחרים סקרו עשרות כנסיות באזור זה, ואף חפרו חלק מהן. בשל מיעוט היישוב המאוחר ברוב האתרים בגליל העליון, השתמרות הכנסיות טובה יחסית, ומאפשרת לערוך מחקר רחב ומעמיק.
מבחינת מסגרת הזמן, העבודה סוקרת את כל כנסיות הגליל העליון החל מהכנסיות הראשונות, שנבנו בראשית המאה ה-5, ועד ליציאתן של הכנסיות האחרונות משימוש, כנראה בראשית המאה ה-9 לסה"נ. הכנסיות המאוחרות יותר באזור נבנו על ידי הצלבנים, במסורת אירופית שונה.
הגישה המחקרית בעבודה זו נוקטת בשיטת 'מן הפרט אל הכלל' (bottom up), מתוך הבנה כי איסוף מירב המידע על כנסיות הגליל העליון, ארגונו והשוואתו למידע הקיים על כנסיות באזורים סמוכים, יציף את ההבדלים בין הכנסיות באזורים השונים.
הפרק הראשון של העבודה מספק רקע כללי לשיטת העבודה ולנושאים העולים בעבודה: שיטת המחקר וסקירת המחקר הקודם; הרקע הגיאוגרפי; תולדות הנצרות בלבנט בתקופה הביזנטית; החברה והיישוב בגליל בתקופה זו; ואדריכלות הכנסיות למרכיביה השונים, ובכללם המנזרים.
הפרק השני מציג את הממצא החומרי של כנסיות הגליל העליון שנאסף לאורך כמאה וחמישים שנה בסקרים ובחפירות. ראשית מוצגות כנסיות שנסקרו ונחפרו במחקרים קודמים: בכל כנסייה מוצג בקצרה הרקע המחקרי, הרקע היישובי, ונסקרים הממצאים המוכרים בכנסייה: תכנית, מבנה, ריהוט, ממצא קטן וכו', וכן שלבי הקיום של הכנסייה. לצערנו, המידע על רוב הכנסיות מוגבל ביותר בין אם טרם נחפרה, ובין אם נחפרה אך טרם פורסמה באופן מלא. למרות זאת, הקורפוס מכיל מידע רב על כנסיות הגליל העליון, ואליו צורפו שתי כנסיות הנמצאות בחלקו הלבנוני של הגליל העליון.
בחלק השני של פרק זה מוצג פרסום מלא וסופי של חפירות בכמה כנסיות בגליל העליון. החפירות נוהלו על ידי, ונערכו במסגרת מחקרם של מ' אביעם וי' אשכנזי שכותרתו 'צמיחה כלכלית ובנייה דתית בגליל הנוצרי בשלהי העת העתיקה: שינויים מקומיים ואזוריים וביטוים בממצא הארכיאולוגיה והספרותי', במימון הקרן הלאומית למדע. חפירות אלו נערכו במטרה לאתר כתובות הקדשה בכנסיות, ואגב כך חשפו מידע חשוב רב. כן מפורסמת לראשונה חפירת הצלה שנערכה בכנסייה נוספת.
למידע לעיל הוספתי נספח המתאר סקרים בכנסיות בגליל העליון הלבנוני, במטרה לצור תמונה רחבה ככל האפשר של כנסיות הגליל העליון. כל הכנסיות המופיעות בקורפוס מרוכזות וממוספרות בטבלה אחת, הכוללת גם כנסיות אחרות המוכרות בתחומי פרובינקיה פניקיה הימית.
הפרק השלישי דן בממצאים שהוצגו בפרק השני בשתי רמות: ראשית, אני מציג קווים משותפים שניתן לזהות בממצא הכנסיות בגליל העליון. בהמשך מושווים קווים משותפים אלו לממצא מקביל באזורים סמוכים בתחום פרובינקיה פניקיה הימית, ולאחר מכן לממצא מקביל בכנסיות בפרובינקיות סמוכות. מתוך מהלך זה ניתן להסיק מסקנות אזוריות מבוססות ובעלות הקשר רחב.
מרכיבי הכנסייה הנידונים בפרק הינם: א. אדריכלות הכנסיות: התכנית, החלוקה הפנימית וחומרי הבנייה; ב. המרכיב העיטורי העיקרי ששרד, הלא הוא הפסיפסים, מבחינת המוטיבים ומבחינת סידור השטיחים; ג. ריהוט הכנסייה הליטורגי והפונקציונלי. דיון נפרד מוקדש לזיהוי כנסיות המנזרים בגליל העליון, סוגיה סבוכה הנתונה בדיון ארוך; וכן דיון העוסק במיקומן יוצא הדופן של כנסיות רבות בשולי הכפר. לסיום מוקדש דיון בשלבי הקיום של הכנסיות בנייתן, שינויים שנערכו בהן במשך קיומן, יציאתן משימוש, והשימוש שנעשה במבנה לאחר מכן.
המסקנה העיקרית העולה מהעבודה היא כי בעיון מדוקדק ניתן לאפיין כנסיות לפי האזור בו נבנו. מאפייני הכנסיות מושפעים משתי ההיררכיות אליהן כפופה הכנסייה: הפרובינקיה האזרחית וההיררכיה הכנסייתית. לחלק מהמאפיינים ניתן לתת הסבר ליטורגי או פונקציונלי, וחלקם נשארים להמשך המחקר. ניתן לזהות השפעה הדדית בין כנסיות בפרובינקיות שונות, והבדלים נוספים בצפונה ובדרומה של הפרובינקיה המושפעים מהכנסיות בפרובינקיות הסמוכות. יש להדגיש כי בתוך כל קבוצת כנסיות יש מגוון רחב של תכניות, עיטורים וכו'; המאפיינים להלן נמצאים רק בחלק מכנסיות האזור, אך קיומם בפרישה אזורית מעיד על המשותף.
להלן אפרט את מאפייני כנסיות הגליל העליון- המייצגות את כנסיות פניקיה הימית בכלל. לכנסיות אלו ישנם כמה מאפיינים אדריכליים ייחודיים: גרם מדרגות רחב המוביל מן האטריום אל הנרתקס; שטח במה גדול; קיומה של במה פניקית (קסטרומו) או במה מורחבת עם שולחן קריאה אחד או שניים – התפתחות שמתרחשת בסוף המאה ה-5 או בראשית המאה ה-6; גלריות מעל לסיטראות; ומתאר טרפזי בחלק מהאפסיסים. למאפיינים האזוריים הקשורים לכנסיות בפרובינקיה פניקיה, ניתן להוסיף מרכיב פולחני אחר הנהוג בפניקיה- הוא נוהגי קבורה ייחודיים.
מרכיבים נוספים מופיעים גם באזורים סמוכים כוללים: כתובות הקדשה בסורית, המעידות על מקורה השמי של חלק מהאוכלוסייה הנוצרית; תכנית הדומה לזו של כנסיות בפרובינקיות הסמוכות: בדרום פניקיה נפוצים יותר שלושה אפסיסים כמו בחלק מכנסיות פלסטינה, ואילו בצפון פניקיה קיים אפסיס בודד עם פסטופוריה, במתכונת הנפוצה בסוריה; עמודים הניצבים על גבי פדסטלים וכרכוב בבסיס האפסיס, כמו בכנסיות סוריה; סידור שטיחי הפסיפסים והשימוש בדגמים מושפע ממקורות בסוריה. בתוך הגליל העליון ניתן לזהות כי הכנסיות במישור החוף עשירות יותר מכנסיות ההר.
מקרה מיוחד בגבול פניקיה–פלסטינה מציף תופעה מעניינת: על פי הופעת הבמה הפניקית בחלק מהכנסיות באזור תפן ובקעת בית הכרם, השייך לפלסטינה, ניתן לשער כי הוא אוכלס על ידי נוצרים מפניקיה. מאידך, תאריך כתובת ההקדשה נקוב לפי מניין פלסטינה השנייה. משמע, אנשי האזור שמרו על פולחן התואם לפניקיה, וסביר להניח שגם היו כפופים להיררכיה הכנסייתית הפניקית, בעוד שמבחינה אזרחית היו כפופים לפרובינקיה פלסטינה ולמניין השנים שלה.

מעניין להשוות בין הפתרונות השונים לקירוב הקורא אל הקהל בכנסיות באזורים שונים: הבמה הסורית בצפון סוריה ובמזרח עירק, האמבו במרכז כנסיות קונסטנטינופול, הבמה הפניקית בפניקיה, והאמבו הצמוד לבמה החל משלהי התקופה הביזנטית בפלסטינה ובערביה.
שני נושאים קשורים למיקומה של הכנסייה בכפר או ביחס לאוכלוסייה הכפרית: האחד הוא שאלת זיהוין של כנסיות כמשרתות מנזר או קהילה. זוהי שאלה הנידונה גם במחקרים אחרים, וטרם הוסכם מהם הקריטריונים לכך. השני הוא מיקומן של כנסיות רבות בשולי הכפר דווקא, תופעה שקיימת גם בפרובינקיות סמוכות. הוצעו לכך סיבות שונות, חלקן טכניות וחלקן אידיאולוגיות.
התנצרות הגליל העליון, כפי שניתן לשפוט מתאריכי ייסוד הכנסיות, החלה לכל המאוחר בראשית המאה ה-5. נראה כי ההתנצרות לא התפשטה מערי החוף אל ההר, אלא הופיעה במקביל בשני האזורים. כנסיות המשיכו להיבנות לאורך כל התקופה הביזנטית, וסביר כי עובדה זו מעידה על התחזקות הדרגתית של הנצרות באזור. מעבר להכנסת הבמה הפניקית שהוזכרה לעיל, ניכרת התחזקות של פולחן המרטירים, המעיד, אולי, גם על הליטורגיה של התהלוכה הגדולה כמו בפלסטינה.
כנסיות רבות בגליל העליון נהרסו בחורבן אלים בראשית המאה ה-7. בשילוב עם מקורות היסטוריים, ניתן להציע כי חורבן זה בא מידי יהודים שפשטו על הקהילות הנוצריות אגב הפלישה הפרסית, אף כי ישנן אפשריות אחרות. כנסיות מעטות נבנו או המשיכו לתפקד לאחר מכה זו, והיישוב הנוצרי באזור לא התאושש יותר.

Nach allgemeiner Ansicht bestand das aufgehende Mauerwerk der meisten hethitischen Gebäude ursprünglich aus einer Holz-Lehmziegel-Konstruktion, deren Nachweis allerdings nur selten möglich ist, da das Holz weitgehend vergangen oder verbrannt ist. Die Verwendung und vor allem die konstruktive Bedeutung von Holz lässt sich fast ausnahmslos durch Abdrücke oder Lücken in den meist sekundär gebrannten Lehmziegelblöcken des einstigen Mauerwerks nachweisen, abgesehen von einigen bildlichen Darstellungen und Erwähnungen in den Keilschrifttexten. Somit ist das ursprüngliche Mauerwerk der meisten hethitischen Gebäude nur zu rekonstruieren. Hier gab es im Laufe der Forschungsgeschichte einige Paradigmen, die durch neue Ausgrabungen am Nordwest-Tor von Kuşaklı revidiert werden müssen. Die weitgehend nur bei ›öffentlichen‹ Gebäuden vorkommende Holz-Lehmziegel-Bautechnik ist dabei mit den sozio-politischen Veränderungen zu Beginn des 2. Jahrtausends in Anatolien in Verbindung zu bringen und funktional als Antwort auf die permanente Erdbebengefahr anzusehen.

Las unidades de diseño básico eran múltiplos de 20 pies romanos (el pie romano variaba, pero era de alrededor de 29,6 cm). Certain issues keep presenting themselves on the map of discussions about architecture and its role as a profession in contemporary societies. Recently, I came across two web interventions that highlight some of these issues. The first is a video clip on You Tube, titled “is the architect obsolete?” and the second is an article on the website of DesignIntelligence by Helena Jubany, titled “The Social Responsibility of Architects” These were a trigger for this editorial in which I re-iterate some of the issues I presented in my earlier writings.

While practicing architecture works very well for some professionals, many are suffering from norms, traditions, and customs adopted by the profession itself. This is due to the fact that the profession still clings to the antiquated notion of an architect or designer waiting in an office for a client to come in with a project. It is also due to the fact that architects do not know how to convince others of their value. The question here is why? Is it the ineffectiveness of professional organizations, is it the notion of ‘starchitects’ that dictates the architectural scene in many parts of the world? Well, it might not be so difficult to offer a validated answer!

Heritage sites and buildings are of vital importance. Study of such
heritage sites unfolds exciting information about the history of
early civilizations and, most importantly, the architecture of that
era. Like other South Asian countries, Pakistan is also rich with
heritage sites and buildings. Unfortunately, these heritage sites
and buildings have mostly been ignored by the concerning
authorities. Recently, a conservation program named as the Royal
Trail at Dehli Gate section of Walled City, Lahore was launched
through the collaboration of the Punjab Government and the
Agha Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), purpose of which was to
revitalize the residential architecture and quality of social life of
the Gali Surjan Singh by incorporating community participation
for conducting the conservation in a sustainable manner. Primarily
data has been collected through questionnaires and informal
interviews of the residents. An in-depth comparison of the area
before, during and after conservation is also included in the
layout of conducted research. The aim is to study changes in the
physical and social dimensions of the constructed environment
of Gali Surjan, which resulted from the intervention of the
conservation program. The documented pre- and postconservation
changes mark the significance of the study.

The role played by Jesuit missionaries as cultural mediators during the early modern period has been object of recent, innovative scholarship that, particularly in the case of China, has focused on the transmission of a body of scientific knowledge, mainly mathematics and astronomy. Missionaries like Matteo Ricci, Giulio Alieni, Ferdinand Verbiest and Adam Schall von Bell, to name just a few of the major characters, have attracted the interest of specialists as well as non-specialist world wide; international conferences and edited volumes have contributed to enrich our understanding of their academic background and scientific endeavours in China. Nonetheless, relatively less attention has been paid to other fields of knowledge, perhaps of a more technical and practical nature, but no less necessary to the fulfillment of the more “edifying” projects the Jesuits wanted to realize in China . This menial, empirical knowledge has to do with perspective drawing, architecture, engineering, carpentry and masonry. They extended as a strategy the skylls to any Imperial needs, adapting to medieval China culture. The example of the European Pavillon of the Old Summer Palace YUAN MING YUAN : The Garden of Perfect Brightness (1747-1759) the start for more strategic targets. Most recent investigation show with indisputable evidence the realization of a Terracotta Army Archeological complex from the Jesuit Painter-Architect , Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) .The complex was realized from 1755 to 1766 , as a secret project of Qianlong Emperor(1711-1799) . An innovative DDM Digital diagnostic model, experimented successfully from the author for the first time in the history in this field, allowed to recognize European technique and technology , both in the edification of the archeological complex as well as for the manufacturing of the warriors statue. China PRC take advantage of this unexpected welcome event in 1974 , changing unilaterally the real history of the complex, to fuel propaganda , as Chairman Mao Tse Dong crowned himself as Commander in Chief Impersonating the first Chinese Emperor Qin Shi Huang (259-210 BCE)

Turkish baths, which have played important roles in Islamic Architecture, are a reflection of Turkish society and culture. In this paper, the architectural features and historical characteristics of the Pazar Baths have been examined in all aspects of its historical process and a suggestion is made concerning the dating of the structure. These buildings, which are one of the important elements of cultural tourism, serve as bridges between past and present. It is of great importance to consider the right strategies for the re-functioning of such structures. At this stage, the experiential marketing method, which addresses the interest and perception of the target audience, seems an appropriate approach. The space, environment and services shaped around experiences will meet the objectives of tourism so long as the original features of historical buildings are preserved. For this reason, in this study which deals with the Pazar Hamam in its historical and cultural context, the topic of re-functionalization of the structure with human-oriented approaches is also mentioned. In this detailed examination, functional suggestions have been made regarding the construction and planning of the space. Araştırmamızda, öncelikle bu kültürün bir parçası olan Pazar Hamamı'nın tarihsel süreç içerisinde yeri ve mimari özellikleri bütün yönüyle incelenmiş ve tarihlendirmesi üzerine bir öneri ileri sürülmüştür. Kültürel turizmin önemli unsurlarından biri olan bu yapılar geçmiş ve güncel arasında köprü vazifesi gör-mektedir. Bu tip yapıların yeniden işlevlendirilme-sinde doğru stratejilerin ele alınması çok önemlidir. Bu aşamada hedef kitle olan ziyaretçilerin ilgi ve al-gısına seslenen deneyimsel pazarlama metodu uygun bir yaklaşım olarak öne çıkmaktadır. Deneyimler etrafında şekillendirilen mekân, çevre ve hizmetler tarihi yapıların orijinal özelliklerinin korunduğu müddetçe turizmin hedeflerini karşılayacaktır. Bu se-beple "Pazar Hamamı"nın ele alındığı bu araştırmada, aynı zamanda insan odaklı yaklaşımlarla mekâna ye-niden işlev kazandırılması konusuna değinilmiştir. The complex urban environment has multiple levels of design and planning that are applied in the form of blocks, layouts and patterns of the city. The aim of this research paper is to develop an analytical study based on the study of urban blocks in dense residential environments of a large city in China. This explores issues of ‘green infrastructure’, ‘urban environmental performance’ and’ urban patterns’, as three main elements of the analysis. The city of Ningbo, located at the Eastern coast of China, is selected as the core case. The findings of the study will enable urban planners and designers to identify refining methods to improve design and planning of urban blocks, layouts and patterns of the cities. This study will emphasise the relationships between green infrastructure and urban environmental performance of the selected cases.
