Nato da un progetto di ricerca, il romanzo ricostruisce la storia di un clamoroso furto d’arte compiuto a Budapest nel 1983 da una banda di italiani di Reggio Emilia. La ferita inferta al regime totalitario e la temerarietà degli autori del furto hanno reso unica questa storia rocambolesca che mise in grave imbarazzo il presidente ungherese János Kádár. Attraverso la ricostruzione delle fasi investigative e le testimonianze dirette dei protagonisti si svelano le dinamiche che hanno spinto quei giovani criminali a compiere questa azione apparente- mente isolata. A distanza di quarant’anni, però, un incredibile intreccio di interessi diver- si, ma convergenti, apre uno scenario fino a oggi impensabile. Ne emerge un affresco del crimine internazionale permeato di politica, servizi e malaffare che andrà ad arricchire le pagine della storia italiana e internazionale.

Gilberto Martinelli (Roma, 1969) Si occupa di relazioni internazionali, in particolare tra l’Italia e l’Ungheria. Ha ricevuto vari riconoscimenti e nel 2014 è stato insignito del “Pro Cultura Hungarica” dalla Repubblica d’Ungheria per aver fatto luce nei rapporti storici tra le due nazioni. È considerato uno dei più qualificati tecnici del suono italiani, soprattutto in ambito cinematografico, dove è molto conosciuto.

Roberto Tempesta (Roma, 1953) Si arruola nei carabinieri in giovane età. Nel 1981, dopo una parentesi nei Reparti operativi speciali, si specializza e entra a far parte del Nucleo tutela patrimonio culturale, dove svolge un ruolo essenziale nei più importanti casi di recupero di opere d’arte sia in Italia che all’estero. È stato insignito di numerose onorificenze e ha ricevuto riconoscimenti internazionali.

We like to think that we live in enlightened times in which both
our historic churches and their contents are valued and well
looked after. Generally this is so, but various factors can put the
contents of churches at serious risk, from sales of church treasures, theft, decay, church reordering, Church closures, inappropriate cleaning and infestations of bats. The effects on church monuments are discussed. Monuments are just one category of church treasures which can suffer from these pressures, but what I have to say about them is illustrative of other artefacts also, such as stained glass, windows, silver and other metalwork, fabric hangings, woodwork, and paintings.

The loss of art and antiquities through destruction, theft, looting, and illegal export and sale has long been associated with dramatic and catastrophic changes in societies such as war, civil unrest, and natural or man-made disasters. However, even relatively peaceful and progressive changes such as the opening of countries for increased travel and tourism or the development of free markets and economies also may stimulate the illegal trade in cultural and religious heritage items.
For traditional Buddhist monasteries and nunneries where valuable religious objects and relics are readily available to the religious community for daily contemplation and worship, there is a special challenge in protecting objects from damage and theft without restricting access.
