In 1817-four years before the end of Spanish presence in the Northern half of América- the territory of New Spain still included the States of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah,Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. This book provides comments (admittedly subjective in nature) about the lives and governments of the 64 most powerful men who ruled over this part the world during almost three centuries. Their lives are arranged in chronologic order to stress the line of continuity in their quest for power-and personal- justification, while resorting to very different ways and means in line with the personality of each viceroy. The author makes abundant use of the professor Lewis Hanke’s opus: ‘Los Virreyes Españoles durante el Gobierno de la Casa de Austria’, a treasure of contemporary historical sources.
