Alcohol has been a part of the human diet for millennia, however little analysis has been done on the origins of large-scale production, specifically in Europe. The rise of agriculture in Europe during the Neolithic revolution brought about a greater availability of food and the allowance for specialized skills. Naturally, one of these skills was that of brewing. Examining four different sites from Neolithic Europe, correlations and connections are made to suggest possibilities of the cultural role of alcohol in its production, consumption, and ritualization.

This special issue of Quaternary International contains a selection of contributions from the international Conference entitled “LBK & Vinča - Formation and Transformation of Early Neolithic Lifestyles in Europe in the second half of the 6th millennium BC” held from 21st to 23rd of March, 2019 in Tübingen (Germany).

From the last phases of European Neolithic, we know several human remains detained outside the funeral context. The large incidence of this kind of discoveries, lead us to think that many human skeletons have undergone possible secondary treatments, probably after the decomposing of putrescible elements. In this regard, the Michelsberg culture is one of the most significant late Neolithic periods. The distribution of this culture, dated between the late fifth and the first half of the fourth MA b.C., covers a wide area including the Central Western Europe from northern France to part of Germany and central Bohemia. Data concerning the Michelsberg funerary practices, show an anomalous situation if compared with other Neolithic periods.
