Charrette

This paper will examine questions regarding effective and efficient graphic communication in the context of community planning, as well as the documented reactions of the general public to the imagery and ideas that community-based design and planning charrettes produce. Key questions regarding the political relationship between recognized public participation methods and charrette drawings will also be examined. Student and alumni feedback, as well as literature review, will evaluate the effectiveness of said techniques, as well as their applicability to opportunities of collaborative design and planning across the allied disciplines. This paper and the course it describes are intended to showcase and inspire the re-visiting of hand drawing and sketching techniques that can unlock potential in design communication and design-based planning activities conducted in the public interest.

Demonstrating the essence of the journal as a truly international platform that covers issues of interest and concern to the global academic and professional community, this issue of Archnet-IJAR, volume 11, issue # 2, July 2017 includes various topics that manifest plurality and diversity as inherent qualities of architectural and urban research published in the journal. Topics include architectural education and design studio teaching, urban and rural slums, heritage and historic environments in various contexts, participatory planning and the charrette process, assessment of public spaces and plazas, and human perception of the built environment. These topics are debated and analytically discussed within cities, settlements, and urban environments in Bahrain, Bangladesh, California-USA, Libya, Scotland, and Spain. The issue also includes three papers selected from the Fifth Architectural Jordanian International Conference – 1-3 November 2016, which uniquely speak to the context of Jordan and the wider Middle East. The edition ends with a book review that highlights emerging issues related to border landscapes and social ecologies.

An extensive literature search found little application of the charrette model implemented to advance, support, and identify transdisciplinarity (TD) research, transdisciplinary teaming models (TDM), transdisciplinary learning (TDL) supporting transformative learning (TL) among participants. This study highlighted differing approaches among teams as they navigated ideation and proposed solutions advancing comprehension among students of applied disciplines and how each approached, negotiated, and solved community-based problems. This essay reviews critical design pedagogies developed recently to explore the complexities of designing affordable housing in the global South. The essay examines in particular the pedagogical approach and the student work produced for the Global Housing design studios, offered by the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at the TU Delft (The Netherlands). The essay discusses the extent to which TU Delft's Global Housing studios contributed to build up an alternative approach to the methodological protocols inherited from the 'techno-social' moment that dominated architectural education in the postwar period.
