moreChittagong University is known as the cleanest public university in Bangladesh with its diversified natural beauty. But now a day's indiscriminate disposal of solid waste and lack of proper management, negative perceptions of people are threatening this sound environment of the campus. This study was conducted in Chittagong University Campus to identify the amount of Waste Generation and composition, also to understand peoples' perception in solid waste management. For this study a semi-structured questionnaire was prepared and a stratified random survey was conducted. Secondary data was collected from the Paharika Housing Society Office, Masterda Surya Sen Hall Office and Registers' Building. Total 30 household was surveyed during this study and 1.0 kg of solid wastes from each strata was collected, segregated and weighed. Solid waste generation per capita was 0.53 kg per day, per household 2.25 kg per day, total solid waste generation in south campus was 1127.86 kg per day. Composition of solid wastes in Chittagong University Campus were Vegetable and food wastes, Polythene and packaging materials, Paper-books and printing materials, Rags, Glass and Ceramics, Woods and leaves, Tin and cans and others which were comprised of 54.53 %, 16.45 %, 19.73 %, 4.2%, 1.9 %, 0.9 %, 0.5 % and 2.7 % respectively. Communal solid waste collection system is practiced in Paharika Housing Society and in other areas solid wastes are dumped in illegal unplanned sites nearby. An immediate step should be taken by the University authority to improvise the current condition through effective solid waste management.
