En esta comunicación nos planteamos la pertinencia de la creatividad como variable explicativa del crecimiento económico. La principal dificultad de esta tarea está precisamente en la propia definición de crecimiento y la complejidad del mismo. Aún así, pensamos que arrojamos algo de luz en el debate sobre el papel de la creatividad en el mundo actual. Partimos de la noción de clase creativa y la interpretación de la creatividad, elaboradas por Richard Florida (2002), que han abierto una importante vía de investigación y controversia en el panorama sociológico internacional. Florida (2002) utiliza un indicador de creatividad que reúne medidas relativas a la tecnología, el talento y, esto es lo novedoso, la tolerancia. En nuestro caso analizamos los coeficientes de correlación que se pueden obtener entre las variables que hemos utilizado para construir los índices de creatividad. Los resultados obtenidos respaldan en cierta medida las tesis sobre la importancia de la economía creativa. La variable creatividad es la de mayor coeficiente positivo y significativo en casi todas las regresiones realizadas. Por otro lado, los componentes del Índice de Creatividad también superan (aunque no rotundamente) a las variables tradicionales como explicativas del crecimiento.
