In this paper, I argue that some Mahāyāna sūtras offer ritual and verbal means for transformative visual encounters with buddhas and their perfect fields. I take as a particularly instructive instance the penultimate chapter of the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa, "The Visual Encounter (darśana) with the Tathāgata Akṣobhya and the Fetching of the Abhirati World," (abhiratilokadhātv-ānayanākṣobhyatathāgatadarśana). The chapter begins with a question posed by the Buddha to Vimalakīrti: when he is "desirous of darśana," of seeing and being seen by the Tathāgata, how does he see him? Vimalakīrti replies with a lengthy apophatic description of the Tathāgata, making it clear that he is, as Vimalakīrti concludes, "inexpressible" (avacanīya). Yet almost immediately thereafter, Vimalakīrti provides an actual opportunity for seeing a Tathāgata: the Tathāgata Akṣobhya, whose entire vast world sphere Abhirati, its glittering features amassed in fairly vivid detail in the sūtra, the bodhisattva gathers up into his hand and brings into this Saha world in order to give darśana to Śākyamuni's assembly. Through this encounter, all present are transformed. While the reality of the Tathāgata is ostensibly "inexpressible," then, he and his world can nonetheless be seen and brought into our own, even when both seem far, far away—and precisely through the verbal and ritual technologies of the sūtra, which make him imaginatively present to audiences and allow darśana of him. These technologies have significant implications for our interpretation of Buddhist “literature,” which often defies any comfortable distinction between textual and visual experience.

La culture indienne a longtemps été identifiée à une philosophie où le monde n’est qu’illusion, où les sens s’avèrent trompeurs, et où, donc, il est nécessaire de se détacher du corps afin d’atteindre une réalité suprême, en dehors de ce monde. Pourtant, une courte immersion dans la réalité quotidienne de l’hindouisme, en particulier par rapport à sa forme dévotionnelle (bhakti) et au rituel de la pūjā s’y rattachant, laisse entendre tout le contraire. Le monde dévotionnel hindou s’avère en fait plongé dans un univers hautement incorporé et sensoriel. La présente thèse se donne pour objectif de réaliser la profondeur de cette nature incorporée et hautement sensorielle de la bhakti hindoue. C’est en envisageant l’utilisation des sens non seulement comme le résultat d’un apprentissage culturel, mais également comme le locus de la connaissance du monde, que la méthodologie proposée par l’anthropologie sensorielle nous permettra de réaliser l’ampleur du rôle joué par le sensorium dans la compréhension, l’acquisition et la communication avec le divin. Nous concentrerons cette étude sur la pūjā hebdomadaire effectuée par la communauté hindoue d’Ottawa au temple Vishva Shakti Durgā. Cette analyse révélera que c’est en utilisant ses sens que le dévot réussit à entrer en contact avec le divin et que c’est également en exploitant divers stimuli sensoriels que le divin réussit à se manifester et à s’incorporer au profit de ses dévots. Le sens de la vision se dévoilera l’un des plus importants dans cette interaction avec les divinités, particulièrement à travers le darśan, mais les autres sens s’avéreront eux aussi essentiels dans cette transaction avec le divin, notamment à travers la musique, les mantras, la prasād, ainsi que les diverses formes de toucher direct ou indirect avec la divinité. Somme toute, cette étude démontrera que la rencontre avec le divin nécessite en soi l’utilisation d’un sensorium sacré. Les diverses perceptions sensorielles engagées dans cette interaction parlent à la fois à la nature humaine et divine de l’être, et permettent dès lors à la vraie nature de l’humain d’entrer en contact avec la vraie et suprême réalité du divin (bhagwān/brahman).

Among Western scholars and researchers, the opinion that between the thought of Patañjali (Yogasūtra) and that of Śaṅkarācārya (Advaita-Vedānta) there is an irreparable rift. Not believing the formulations to be completely convincing in this regard, we hope that the subject can benefit from further studies conducted with an approach respectful of hermeneutical methods and the specificity of thought contained in the texts, not a limited cultural horizon, much less reducible to it.
In these brief notes we will focus exclusively on the requirements that the two authors identify as pre-requisite conditions for accessing Traditional Wisdom.

The development of the Internet has ushered in new ways of relating to oneself and one’s environment by allowing geographically disparate communities to gather and discuss issues specific to their interests and cultural backgrounds. Alternately, the same Internet apparatus fosters conflict through the clash of these diverse online communities. Hindu temples and their communities, both in India and the European, American, and Southeast Asian diasporas, have consistently used the Internet as a means of reaching a wider audience and appealing to their established congregations. Since the late 1990’s, forums such as USENET, which operates as a general discussion site, have offered sections dedicated to talking about different religious traditions, Hinduism among them. More recently, Hindu temple administrations have created online sites specific to their temples, offering virtual congregation services (puja) to their lay communities. Ritual services available for purchase online include (but are not limited to): aarati (light offering), alankara (adorning an icon with flowers), the offering of prasad (consecrated food), as well as seasonally specific offerings made for festival icons or processional deities. This paper examines the shifting orientation to the comportment of Hindu ritual made possible through the apparatus of the Internet and attempts to unpack its relation to canonical representations of bhakti (devotional ecstasy). The online sites and ritual offerings of California Hindu temples are the focus of this paper and constitute an expression of Hindu religious comportment and identity in the North American Hindu diaspora.

L’approccio al Vivekacūḍāmaṇi , come per i precedenti testi di cui è stata curata l’edizione, scaturisce dal percorso personale lungo la Via (mārga), della Sādhana Yoga. E’ quindi il frutto dell’operatività che si sviluppa cercando di mantere l’equilibrio armonico tra azione concreta e ricerca speculativa. La pratica di svādhyāya, infatti, richiede sia lo studio di sé stessi (‘nosce te ipsum’),  sia lo studio e la recitazione delle Scritture Sacre.  Vivekacūḍāmaṇi fa parte di esse. La sua lettura, cercando di apprenderne e metterne in pratica l’insegnamento, è un’azione che ricorre ciclicamente nel tempo, con uno sviluppo a spirale. Come per tutti i testi sapienziali della Tradizione, per penetrarne i Significati occorrono vigilanza, perseveranza e pratica assidua.
Tra i molteplici insegnamenti ricevuti, in particolare da Sri Yogacharya Ananada Balayogi Bhavanani (uno dei rarissimi veri Yogī viventi), c’è quello di condividere il proprio percorso, rendendolo disponibile a tutti i ricercatori che hanno intrapreso la Sādhana Yoga. Questo testo è un umile tentativo di mettere in pratica l’insegnamento ricevuto e l’esito dell’azione compiuta (karma), senza alcuna aspettativa.

L’expérience du religieux au cœur de la dévotion hindoue est indissociable d’un contexte purement sensoriel : les sens y représentent le support de la communication entre les humains et les divinités. Parmi ces sens se démarque néanmoins la vue, arme puissante pouvant autant tuer que transmettre des qualités sacrées. L’échange de regards devient conséquemment essentiel à l’expérience hindoue, passant du darśan et du mauvais œil jusqu’au regard destructeur des dieux. Cette exploration du rôle de la perception visuelle dans l’hindouisme, appuyée par divers exemples tirés du film Jai Santoshi Maa, nous révélera comment ce regard puissant et perméable peut provoquer un déséquilibre entre les rôles de l’acteur actif et de l’acteur récepteur dans cet échange visuel; ce déséquilibre peut toutefois être rétabli par une dévotion « aveugle » de la part de l’acteur récepteur.
