From its headquarters in Karachi, the traditionalist Sunni movement, Dawate Islami, has spread to a number of other countries and in 1996 it founded a branch in South Africa. South Africa, in turn, has witnessed a mushrooming of Dawate Islami centres in various towns and cities throughout the country and has been the base for further expansion of the movement to other parts of Africa.
What drives the members to the movement? How were they inducted as members? This paper explores these questions through portraits of two senior South African activists: Mufti Abdun Nabi Hamidi and Amirudeen Kajee. Drawing on the notions of ‘practices’ ‘virtues’ and ‘states of the self” inspired by the work of Talal Asad, this paper also seeks to provide a framework for understanding the nature of the activists’ belonging and commitment to the movement.

Thomas K. Gugler beleuchtet das Phänomen des Post- islamismus anhand zweier Missionsbewegungen aus Südasien. Die stark sufisch geprägte Daʿwat-e Islāmī wurde als Gegen-bewegung zur Deobandi-nahen Tablīġī Ǧamāʿat gegründet und ist mittlerweile eine der größten transnationalen religiösen Bewegungen aus Pakistan. Die Konkurrenzdynamik zwischen beiden Organisationen wirft zahlreiche Fragen zu modernen religiösen Wandlungsprozessen auf den zunehmend deregulierten Religionsmärkten auf. Netzwerke von Symbolen, Mythen und Ritualen religiöser Traditionen scheinen sich als komplexe adaptive Systeme in ihren Entwicklungsprozessen zunehmend nach Regeln der Ressourcenmaximierung durch milieuübergreifende Ideenkommunikation gegenseitig zu beeinflussen und kompetitiv weiterzuentwickeln. Sunna wird dabei zu einem normativen System der Lebensführung, das insbesondere jüngere Muslime befähigt, konfessions-spezifisches Sozialkapital zu generieren. Außerdem wird aufgezeigt, inwieweit die frömmigkeitspolitischen Projekte der jungen Neofundamentalisten den alten Islamisten das Wasser abgraben.

This is a very candid discussion. Hazrat Ilyas (Rah:) was usually not outspoken. However, he said, "I wish to say a lot of things, but if I told them now, it would be ahead of proper time and so, I daren't do so." At present, this candid discussion seems to be timely because once a seedling, over time, grows to a strong tree, the animals can no longer destroy it.
