Defence Rampart

This article is a study of the relationship between the location of wooden-earthen ramparts and the first brick buildings of the castle and suburbium of Wrocław’s Ostrów Tumski. On the basis of specific cases, the relationship between these two types of architecture is traced. The second half of the twelfth century and the thirteenth century, i.e., a specific period when traditional ramparts gradually disappeared and brick architecture appeared in lowland towns, are taken into consideration. In the text, an attempt is made to answer the question of whether (and in what way) these two types of architecture co-existed and whether the presence of the old fortifications was an obstacle or, on the contrary, a stimulating factor for the development of castles, walls and churches. In the course of the investigation, a different reconstruction of the course of the ramparts surrounding the main castle in the twelfth century emerged, which also resulted in a revision of views on the size of the gord and later the castle

Die Entwicklung der Besiedlung im Zvolener Talkessel (mittel Slowakei) wurde seit der Urzeit eng mit der Kontrolle der wichtigen Straße verbunden, die aus dem Gebiet des heutigen Budapests durch die Region des Eipeltals, sowie durch die Städte Krupina, Zvolen, nach Orava und weiter in die Region von Krakau in Polen führte. Diese Strecke wird im Mittelalter als Via Magna erwähnt (z.B. bei der Abgrenzung der Gemeinde Hronsek im Jahre 1250 („ad magnam viam, que vadit de villa Zoulum in Lypche“). Der andere Weg führte durch die Region des Grantales und verband die Südwestslowakei mit der Region Zips. In Zvolen war die Kreuzung dieser Wege und sie wurden sicher seit der Urzeit verwendet.
An einer Nebenstraße von Via Magna befindet sich die Wall-Linie Drahy. Es scheint
kaum wahrscheinlich zu sein, dass der Wall in der Fundstelle Drahy nur zur Kontrolle dieser Straße aufgebaut werden sein könnte. Aufgrund seiner Struktur und Umfang muss man eine schützende Rolle der Siedlung im südlichen Becken von Zvolen gegen Eindringlinge aus dem Süden vermuten. Ein ähnlicher Wall mit einem Graben befindet sich südöstlich von der untersuchten Fläche in der Flur Bukovinka. Die Analyse der Probe aus dem Befund von Drahy hat eine Datierung ins 7–8. Jhs. ergeben (1280 + / – 40 BP; 92,5% Wahrscheinlichkeit zwischen den Jahren 650–830 n. Chr.).

La commune de Soyons (07) abrite une importante occupation du V e s. av. J.-C. qui a pour originalité d'associer un site de hauteur, le Malpas, à un établissement de plaine dans le village actuel. Depuis les années 1960, Soyons est présenté comme un lieu privilégié pour l'étude des échanges nord/sud via le Rhône, qui passe aux pieds du site. Des opérations de fouilles programmées menées depuis 2013 sur le site de hauteur apportent de nouvelles informations sur la chronologie et la nature de l'occupation du site. Une fortification, avec un mode de construction complexe, est érigée au moment de l'entrée du site dans le réseau du commerce méditerranéen. Le plateau semble alors occupé par un habitat tandis que la ville-basse est, entre-autre, le siège d'une activité de l'artisanat du bronze. Si le mobilier céramique est clairement de culture nord-alpine, certains marqueurs vont dans le sens d'une assimilation du mode de vie méridional par une partie de la population. Abstract: The village of Soyons (Ardèche) houses an important 5th century AD settlement, which associates a hillfort, the Malpas, and a lowland site in the actual town. Since the 1960s, Soyons has been presented as a privileged spot for studying North/South exchanges in the Rhône valley. Since 2013, new excavations have been providing new data about the chronology and nature of the site's occupation. A complexe fortication was built when Soyons was included in the Mediterranean trade network. Here the plateau seems to be a place of habitat while a part of the lowland site is used as a place of bronze craft activity. The ceramic corpus clearly belongs to the north-alpine culture, however some markers point out an assimilation of the Southern lifestyle by a part of the population.
