21.yy'da artan küresel enerji sorunu, yapılarda malzeme kullanımını ve çeşitliliğini yakından etkilemiştir. Dolayısıyla enerji korunumu, mimari yapılarda gelecek için oldukça önemli bir konuyu temsil etmektedir. Yapılardaki şeffaf veya geniş açıklıkların enerji korunumuna doğrudan etkisi olduğu düşünülmektedir. Yapı tasarımında doğru malzeme kullanımı, maliyet ve enerji korunumu gibi sürdürülebilirlik kavramları bakımından önemli faktörler olarak görülmektedir. Günümüzde geniş veya şeffaf açıklıkların geçilmesi için kullanılan çelik, cam gibi malzemeler yapıya fazladan yük oluştururken, kullanılan gereçlerden dolayı maliyeti yükseltmektedir. İnsanoğlu yakın tarihte, yapılarda kullandığı taş, çelik, cam gibi geleneksel kabul edilen malzemelere çeşit oluşturabilecek membran malzemeleri ve yeni strüktürleri keşfetmiştir. Membran germe sistemler, esnek, hafif ve dayanıklı yapılarıyla geleneksel malzemelere karşı alternatif oluşturduğu söylenebilmektedir. Etilen Tetrafloroetilen (ETFE) olarak adlandırılan floropolimer bazlı membran malzemesinin, performansı, işlevi, olumlu ve olumsuz özelliklerinin incelenmesi kaçınılmaz bir hal almaktadır. ETFE folyo ile yapılan şişirilebilen yastık sistemler, yüksek ışık geçirgenliği özelliği nedeniyle camla kıyaslanabilmektedirler. ETFE sistemler, yalıtım olarak Low E II termal özelliği metoduyla çalışmaktadırlar. ETFE, ısı ve ışık bakımından düşük maliyet sağladığı için yapıların giderlerini de bu yönde etkilemektedir. Kullanılan folyo sayısını ve özelliklerini değiştirerek ışık ve ısı ayarlamaları ve geçirime müdahaleler yapılabilmektedir. Hafif ve esnek olması tasarım açısından mimaride bir çok olasılığa imkan sağlamaktadır. ETFE'nin yapılarda kullanılmasıyla yerini aldığı taşıyıcı yapı malzemelerinin eksilmesi, yapı maliyetinde iyileştirmelere sebep olmaktadır. Çalışmada asma germe yapı sistemlerin analizi, germe sistemlerde kullanılan membran örtü sistemlerin tasarım ve malzeme özellikleri ele alınmaktadır. Membran örtü çeşidi olarak kullanılan ETFE'nin malzeme özellikleri, ETFE folyoların fiziki özellikleri ve performansı, mimaride kullanım alanları ve ETFE folyo ile yapılan şişirilebilen yastık sistem (Inflatable Pillow System, IPS) yöntemleri incelenmektedir. IPS sistemle yapılan yahut içerisinde barındıran uygulama örnekleri ele alınmaktadır. ETFE folyoları kullanılarak hava ile şişirilen yastık sistemler, yapının tamamını oluşturduğu gibi, yapının belirli kısımlarında da kullanıldığı uygulamalar mevcuttur. ETFE folyo şişirebilir yastık sistemlerin, yerini aldığı diğer malzemelerle birlikte, uygulama örneklerindeki çalışma şekli, karşılaştırılması ve sonuçların değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Tüm bu özelliklerle birlikte tekil yapılarda kullanımı güç olsa dahi kompleks yapılarda açıklık geçme ve şeffaf boşluklar için kullanılabilecek seçenek olarak düşünülmektedir. The increasing global energy problem in the 21st century has closely affected the use and diversity of materials in buildings. Therefore, energy conservation represents a crucial issue for the future of architectural structures. It is thought that transparent or wide openings in buildings have a direct effect on energy conservation. The use of correct materials in building design is seen as important factors in terms of sustainability concepts such as cost and energy conservation. Today, materials such as steel and glass, which are used to pass wide or transparent openings, create an extra load on the structure, while increasing the cost due to the materials used. In recent history, human beings have discovered membrane materials and new structures that can create a variety of traditional materials such as stone, steel and glass used in buildings. Membrane tensioning systems can be said to be an alternative to traditional materials with their flexible, light and durable structures. It becomes inevitable to examine the performance, function, positive and negative properties of the fluoropolymer-based membrane material called Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). Inflatable cushion systems made with ETFE foil can be compared with glass due to their high light transmittance. ETFE systems work with Low E II thermal property method as insulation. Since ETFE provides low cost in terms of heat and light, it also affects the expenses of the buildings in this direction. By changing the number of foils used and their properties, light and heat adjustments and interventions can be made. Its lightness and flexibility allows many possibilities in architecture in terms of design. With the use of ETFE in buildings, the reduction of the carrier building materials it replaces causes improvements in building costs. In this study, analysis of tensile structure systems, design and material properties of membrane cover systems used in tensile systems are discussed. The material properties of ETFE, which is used as a membrane cover type, the physical properties and performance of the foils, the usage areas in architecture and the inflatable pillow system (Inflatable Pillow System, IPS) methods made with ETFE foil are examined. Examples of applications made with or containing the IPS system are discussed. Cushion systems that are inflated with air using ETFE foils form the entire structure, as well as there are applications where they are used in certain parts of the structure. It is aimed to compare ETFE foil inflatable pillow systems with other materials it replaces, in terms of the way it works in application examples and to evaluate the results. With all these features, even if it is difficult to use in single structures, it is considered as an option that can be used for openings and transparent spaces in complex structures. This paper discusses the differences in the design process between a shape finding and a form finding approach. It will examine historical traditions of both approaches and look at these methods in today’s design world. Examples of the work of FTL are used as descriptive case studies to illustrate the different aspects of membrane envelopes including ETFE foil cushions, tensile membranes, and cable nets.

The article deals with pneumatic inflatable structures and advanced materials in the context of modern conditions and their relevance in the architecture of the future. This article discusses examples of the implementation of the architectural objects on the basis of pneumatic inflatable structures, which are not inconsistent with the environment and are exceptional examples of the world of modern architecture.

Parte del patrimonio arquitectónico se ha visto degradado con el paso del tiempo y su exposición a las inclemencias del clima y se necesitan una serie de acciones para consolidar y restaurar esos espacios aunque manteniendo su esencia.
En este trabajo se muestran los beneficios del uso de un sistema de membranas o cubiertas ligeras para intervenir en edificios existentes. La arquitectura textil ha evolucionado hacia nuevas formas, materiales y técnicas constructivas y destaca por cualidades como su ligereza, la reversibilidad de las estructuras, grandes luces o el uso de nuevos materiales sostenibles.
Se estudian y comparan tres proyectos construidos recientemente de intervención con membranas en el patrimonio arquitectónico, mediante la creación de cubiertas ligeras: Cubierta de la antigua cúpula de la Iglesia de San Pedro, la Cubierta de la antigua Iglesia de Sant Pere y la Cobertura Huaca Cao. Los proyectos utilizan distintas estrategias de aproximación al patrimonio desde una mirada respetuosa.
Se delimita cada proyecto según sus características, las intenciones proyectuales y se analiza el sistema constructivo de cada uno: cojín neumático, estructura tensada rígida y estructura tensada flexible, observando los beneficios que aporta a la intervención.
