The article aims to examine the cases of political impact of Italian regions in the EU in the post-Brexit period. Steps of the new “yellow-green” government, which came to power in June 2018, towards political impact on the regions balancing between right- and left-wing populist economic and social reforms are assessed. The hypothesis of the article is that despite huge differences in political, economic, and social conditions, all cases illustrate that regions of Italy will focus mostly on paradiplomatic activities rather than mutating towards protodiplomacy. Special attention will be given to the northern regions of Italy, where paradiplomacy has been developed since the beginning of the 1990s.

This article examines sub-state nationalist strategies in relation to European integration in the Basque Country, Catalonia, Flanders and Scotland. First, we discuss the impact of European and economic integration on sovereignty and the cost of independence for small nations. Second, we compare the support for the European project in our four territories. We stress that European integration is a divisive issue in British politics but fundamentally consensual in the other cases. Third, we examine the European strategies of sub-state nationalist parties. We distinguish between two broad strategies, one maximizing regional influence in the EU and the other promoting independence within the EU. Regarding the latter, we focus on the cases of Scotland and Catalonia, where sub-state nationalist parties currently seek independence.

How big disparities are both internally between the MS- Germany, Austria, and the Slovak Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Romania, and Bulgaria and externally with the three non-MS (Serbia, Moldova, and Ukraine)? In order to achieve better cohesion between the fourteen (14) countries, the European Commission has launched the new Danube Program in 2011, with budget 231 924 597 mln. еuro. Have these money improved the level of cohesion between the countries from the Lower and Upper Danube?
