Hydrazine is advantageous for attitude control systems of satellites because it is space storable for long times and the developed thrusters are reliable for long term operations. Unfortunately hydrazine is very difficult to handle on ground due to its very high toxicity. Especially with regard to the REACH regulation of the European Community, which has passed some years ago, Hydrazine is on the candidate list of substances whose use could be limited in future. Thus strong research efforts have to be conducted today to find and to qualify alternative propellants, which have significantly simpler handling characteristics, are less toxic, environmentally benign and have similar or even better performance characteristics. One of the most promising candidates to replace hydrazine is the ADN based ionic liquid FLP-106, which is a monopropellant and has been developed by FOI. This monopropellant has a higher Isp in comparison to hydrazine and to LMP-103S which is currently used by the ECAPS company from Sweden. Also FLP-106 has a lower vapor pressure than LMP-103S. Thrusters using ionic liquid propellants are working with heated catalysts to decompose the propellant. One of the main drawbacks of this design is the lack of cold-start capability. Additionally, the high combustion temperature is a concern, possibly requiring high-temperature alloys like Iridium/Rhenium. FLP-106 consists of 64.6 % ADN (ammonium dinitramide), 23.9 % water and 11.5 % of a low volatile hydrocarbon fuel. In order to use simpler materials with lower melting points the combustion temperature of FLP-106 can be decreased by increasing the water content in the propellant. However, the increased water content will decrease the specific impulse and may also influence the ignition properties.

The low-pressure oxidizer preflow during start-up of an upper-stage rocket engine is analyzed computationally. An iterative Euler-Lagrange approach is used to describe the three-dimensional two-phase flow of oxidizer vapour and spray which is characterized by intense phase transfer. Multipoint injection and flash-atomization of liquid oxi-dizer is modelled by stochastic droplet injection according to injector locations and spray characteristics. Based on the framework of classical D 2-theory, a flash-evaporation model is developed to describe heat and mass transfer between superheated liquid droplets and vapour flow. The computed transsonic flow field agrees well with experimental characteristics such as pressure level and temperature decrease and further provides detailed local information on vapour flow homogeneity and liquid wall deposit.

Experiment 2 examined more locations on the screen with on-off banners. The results of both experiments showed that participants better recognized the content of banners positioned on the top left and bottom right corners than the top right and bottom left corners. Experiment 2 showed that participants were more likely to recognize the content of on-off banners that positioned closer to the center of the screen than those at the edges of the screen. Implications for attention capture and distraction are discussed with respect to producing more effective advertisements and communicating priority information are discussed.

The flashing Brownian ratchet is a stochastic process that alternates between two regimes, a one-dimensional Brownian motion and a Brownian ratchet, the latter being a one-dimensional diffusion process that drifts towards a minimum of a periodic asymmetric sawtooth potential. The result is directed motion. In the presence of a static homogeneous force that acts in the direction opposite to that of the directed motion, there is a reduction (or even a reversal) of the directed motion effect. Such a process may be called a tilted flashing Brownian ratchet. We show how one can study this process numerically, using a random walk approximation or, equivalently, using numerical solution of the Fokker–Planck equation. Stochastic simulation is another viable method.

Precision balls are used in critical aeronautical bearings, guidance system balls for space and military applications, precision valves, automotive bearings and other applications where higher precision is necessary. However, since the surface finishing process necessary for the balls to achieve the required surface quality and geometric accuracy is time consuming and expensive, it increases the manufacturing cost significantly and therefore confines their widespread application. Hence, the development of a more economical finishing method becomes a critical problem in the application of advanced Steel ball manufacturing. The major concern of the current study is to investigate the performance of the Flashing machine in the initial stage. In flashing of steel balls, the influence of the groove depth of plates on the Material Removal rate of balls is analyzed experimentally. Five flashing plates with different groove depth are used. A shallow round groove is equivalent to a V groove with a large angle. A deep round groove corresponds to a V groove with a small angle. From the experimental readings, regardless of the groove depth of the Gap plate, the one where the groove of the rotary plate is deep it is found that MRR is large. Best MRR is found at the combination of 0.1 D – 0.3 D. The experiment for Flashing was designed using a full factorial design with two levels for each input variable (2 k factorial design). Since there are three factors, each at two levels, the design is 2 3 factorial design which requires 8 runs to complete all the possible combinations. Factors taken for the experiments are Pressure between two plates, No. of Grooves in plates & RPM of Ring Plate. From the main effect plots, to achieve higher Material removal rate pressure should be at its higher level, RPM should be also at higher level, No. of grooves should be at its lower level. Also from the experiments the percentage contribution of various parameters on Material removal rate are Pressure having 58.16% , RPM having 16.86%, No. Of grooves having 23.90%. Analyzing the various process parameters, their influence in the operation & experiments are conducted at NHB Bearings Company.
