Illustration Theory

People from the mainstream art world are beginning to take note of the collection, analysis, history, and appreciation of illustration. There is a danger, however, that they unwittingly bring with them a deficit of understanding and even a prejudiced eye, due to illustration having been villified for most of the 20th century as "not-art". This essay debunks some common myths, and serves as a primer on what to look for in illustration art.

‚Illustration‘ zu definieren ist nicht einfach; immer sitzt sie zwischen den Stühlen der angewandten und freien Kunst, zwischen Dienstleistung und Selbstverwirklichungsanspruch. Mit neuen Möglichkeiten technischer Reproduzierbarkeit werden Illustrationen im 19. Jahrhundert einerseits omnipräsent und anderseits teilweise ‚minderwertig‘. Eine ähnliche Neubewertung erfahren sie heute im Kontext digitaler Reproduzierbarkeit und Produktion. Die Publikation beleuchtet kulturhistorische Entwicklungen sowie kunst-, medien- und kommunikationswissenschaftliche Perspektiven und beginnt, die Position von Illustration in Bildgeschichte und -wissenschaft zu klären.


Defining 'illustration' is not easy; it is always caught between the pillars of applied and fine art, between serving and claiming autonomy. With new possibilities of technical reproducibility, illustrations in the 19th century became omnipresent on the one hand and partially 'inferior' on the other. Today, they are experiencing a similar reevaluation in the context of digital reproducibility and production. The publication illuminates cultural-historical developments as well as perspectives from art, media, and visual studies and begins to clarify the position of illustration in image history and visual studies.

Video-ilustracija knjige je nova forma dramskog i audio-vizuelnog izra­žavanja, čija unapred zadata funkcija, pored njene čisto umetničke ili pri­me­njeno-umetničke egzistencije, može biti i kreiranje imidža knjige na koju se vi­deo-ilustracija odnosi. Video-ilustracija knjige tekst date knjige ilustruje po­kretnim (filmskim) slikama što dovodi ilustraciju u jedan položaj, do sada ma­lo istražen, a to je mogućnost tretmana ilustracije knjige kao pokre­tne ilu­stracije koja, kao i statična ilustracija, korespondira sa datim književnim narativom, predstavlja ga na određeni način i time utiče na samu percepciju narativa. Uticaj video-ilustracije knjige na komunikacijski efekat književnog narativa sa publikom, posredstvom prevođenja književnog dela iz pisanog u audio-vizuelni kod, predmet je ovog istraživanja sa više aspekata: na koji način pokretna ilustracija u okviru video-ilustracije knjige utiče na percepciju narativa, na koji način video-ilustracija knjige u celini utiče na narativ, kakav je efekat zadate funkcije video-ilustracije – kreiranja pozitivnog imidža knjige.
