Ixil Community

Investigación sobre los sucesos violentos ocurridos la aldea Cocop, comunidad del altiplano guatemalteco habitada por población indígena Ixil.  El análisis se realizó desde una perspectiva histórica, con base en los resultados de las exhumaciones realizadas, para recuperar a las víctimas de una masacre, ocurrida en la referida comunidad.

El presente libro es el producto final del proyecto homónimo realizado en el segundo semestre del año 2013.

El objetivo del mismo fue llevar a cabo un esfuerzo colectivo de parte de un equipo de investigadores jóvenes formados en los campos de la antropología, arqueología e historia. En síntesis este fue un esfuerzo multidisciplinario orientado hacia la recuperación y puesta en valor de la memoria cultural de la sociedad maya ixil.

Asimismo, un elemento complementario de dicha investigación fue la realización de talleres de formación académica-social referentes a los temas de Salud, Derechos sociales, Epigrafía e Historia. Esto con el fin de que el proyecto tomara un cauce de diálogo más que de simple y llana investigación. En pocas palabras, retribuir a la comunidad por el conocimiento compartido.

Este proyecto fue posible realizarlo gracias al aporte económico del del Aporte la descentralización cultural (ADESCA); y los avales académicos del Centro de estudios mexicanos y centroamericanos (CEMCA) con sede en Guatemala y la Escuela de Historia de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala.

Recent scholarship indicates several benefits of mother tongue education (MTE) in supporting student learning. Within one Mayan community in Guatemala, Ixil is the mother tongue spoken at home and faces extinction due to Indigenous oppression and genocide. This qualitative case study highlights efforts of 13 teachers and administrators at one primary school that took up the dual task of offering MTE and revitalizing the Ixil language. In order to gain a better understanding of Indigenous teachers' perceptions of language, culture, and MTE, this research was guided by the following questions: (1) How do teachers perceive their own understanding of attitudes and beliefs about language and culture? (2) How do they perceive their role in MTE and language revitalization? (3) Are teachers critical in their understanding of the importance of language revitalization and best practices for language pedagogy? Data was collected via site observations and surveys, then analyzed using constant comparative analysis. Themes that emerged included how teachers perceive their language revitalization and MTE agentive roles; how agency is expressed through the process of negotiating language and understanding through literacy; and addressing local priorities. Implications of the study and for future study are discussed.

Au Guatemala, le long conflit armé (1960-1996) qui a opposé l’armée aux mouvements de guérilla a profondément marqué le pays. Les populations rurales, indigènes non-combattantes ont été victimes de massacres suite à la politique de terre brûlée appliquée par les gouvernements militaires au pouvoir. Aujourd’hui, l’expression et la transmission de la mémoire de cette violence est problématique, en particulier dans le rapport des populations locales à l’Etat. Cet article interroge la façon dont la mémoire locale s’est constituée historiquement dans un rapport dynamique avec des interlocuteurs étrangers (non nationaux) à partir d’un exemple ethnographique : celui d’un groupe de veuves du conflit dans la région Ixil.

Entre 1960 y 1996 la República de Guatemala fue el escenario de uno de los conflictos armados internos más crueles de América Central. Más de 200.000 personas fueron asesinadas, ocurrieron miles de casos de violencia sexual, devastación de pueblos, arrasamiento de tierras y desplazamientos forzosos.
La comunicación presenta parte de los resultados preliminares del trabajo de campo realizado entre 2018 y 2019 en la región ixil para una tesis doctoral en curso. Durante este se han realizado entrevistas a agentes implicados en los juicios de genocidio y crímenes de lesa humanidad contra el pueblo maya ixil durante los gobiernos de Fernando Romeo Lucas García (1978-1982) y de Efraín Ríos Montt (1982-1983), análisis de fuentes documentales y observación participante.
A nivel jurídico, para probar que los hechos que ocurrieron en la región corresponden al delito de genocidio, es imprescindible mostrar la intencionalidad de destruir, total o parcialmente, a un grupo nacional, étnico, racial o religioso. La comunicación presenta como se conformó militarmente el grupo étnico maya ixil en los planes del gobierno de Efraín Ríos Montt, a partir de los cuales se accionaron las operaciones del ejército para destruir y aniquilar a dicho grupo. Esta categoría militar se pondrá en diálogo con la percepción de los propios ixiles en la actualidad, los cuales, a diferencia de la categoría militar que presenta el grupo como homogéneo, subrayan una diferenciación entre los ixiles de Nebaj, Chajul i Cotzal - municipios que configuran la región-.

The purpose of this case study is to understand the language and literacy experiences of adolescent immigrant Ixil students in the United States. For this, two questions focusing on language transference and literacy skills of participants were researched. Findings reflect the divergent language and literacy learning realities of Ixil participants and their non-Indigenous Latinx EL counterparts. These findings offer new insights of how Ixil students understand formal schooling and sets a foundation for future research addressing the literacy and language experiences and realities of Indigenous Latinx ELs in U.S. classrooms.

Publié dans le cadre du projet ANR SoV - Sortir de la Violence, cet article prend comme point de départ les violences sexuelles commises à l'encontre des femmes mayas ixil du Guatemala pendant le conflit armé. Il explore ensuite la façon dont certaines femmes se sont emparées de cette question afin de construire un féminisme résilient. L'analyse des mouvements idéologiques transnationaux qui inspirent le féminisme ixil permet ainsi d'interroger la façon dont les concepts militants traversent le continent ainsi que les enjeux de cette circulation sur les communautés locales.

The growing presence of the Indigenous diaspora from Latin America is beginning to transform notions of Latinidad and Indigeneity in the United States (Blackwell, Boj Lopez, & Urrieta Jr., 2017). Yet, scant studies have focused on the experiences of Indigenous Latinx students in U.S. learning environments and on what is needed to ensure their academic success. In this article, I share the results of a portraiture qualitative research inquiry that explored the academic and social experiences of an adolescent Ixil English learner with limited or interrupted education at a U.S. high school. Findings paint a picture of the participant’s experiences and resilience while providing a foundation for teachers and researchers serving students with similar academic and social realities.

A collective essay that looks at movement in Mesoamerica—a place comprising what is now known as Central America, Mexico as well as parts of California and the southwestern United States. After elucidating how the violence of modernity/coloniality creates regimes of knowledge, aesthetics, and politics that deny corporeal self-determination, the authors offer
varied, but interconnected, approaches to “transmotion” as embodied practices that generate relational sovereignties despite the ongoing violence visited upon persons in movement, especially at the artificial borders between the geopolitical bodies comprising Mesoamerica. The authors’ three voices—Kaqchikel and Ixil Mayan as well as de-indigenized mestizx—relationally build upon each other to trace the complexities at the heart of decolonization, especially in regards to the diasporic, the dispossessed, and the displaced.
