Studying history is challenging to understand historical events and their relevance in the present generation. The Republic Act 1425 (Rizal Bill) of the Philippines mandated studying the Life and Works of Rizal to promote and develop nationalism by developing the nationalistic consciousness of today’s Filipinos by understanding the history of the 19th century. Using a holistic approach, the discussion of history from relevant events in the pre-colonial and 19th centuries supports the understanding and interconnection of Rizal’s contributions to the Philippine revolution. Recent historians in the 20th and 21st centuries as major references in drawing the chronological order of events relevant to Rizal’s times, while conceptualizing the influences in Rizal’s upbringing and nationalism as an individual to become a role model for Filipinos to develop nationalism while embracing personal talents. As there are controversies in the study and arguments for the 19th century, understanding its social circumstances will clarify such debates. 21st century still faces existing social issues rooted in the 19th century, by understanding the effects of colonialism in society, Filipino scholars of the next generation can facilitate the development of nationalism by responding to unresolved conflicts in the mentality of society to recover and progress from the social trauma inflicted by history, and the intellectualization of the Filipino culture.

This reflection on Rizal’s life plays into the familiar mythic depiction of the hero’s
life by using the popular storytelling trope of the “hero’s journey”. Rizal, especially after
the American colonization, had been instilled to the people as the enlightened and
pacifistic ideal Filipino hero— a testament to what a peaceful reform can achieve!
While that all may be true about his character and motivations, it does not fully
reflect the extent of his lasting impact. However, in chronicling his life through the

Some accuse him of having no heart for the people and just another reformer who isn't making a real difference-just an Illustrado-Haciendero trying to keep their title and not jeopardize themselves. However, Rizal's contributions extend far beyond politics. Rizal was a symbol of intellect, an icon of morals and a role model for nationalists. Rizal battled with his ink and pen against the methods of the Spanish colony in the Philippines. The Spain he once conformed to (and later on, conformed to once again). It was a battle against the ways of the monarchy that had established itself throughout the years as the colonizers believed that they had the divine and natural right to lead the Philippines. It was like going against a wall that has established itself through time: the cement in between the hollow blocks being the trust of the natives through the different religious occasions the Spaniards has presented before the Filipinos but eventually traumatizing the natives in the former's inhumane acts such as the execution of the three priests: Gomez, Zamora, and Burgos as well as the latter’s correspondence, Suldua. Burgos’ death specifically, who wept and begged the executioners to spare his life, has created a massive emotional impact on Filipinos who want to fight back as per the letter of Rizal to Pablo.
More importantly, RIzal was fighting against the friars– the very friars who would do anything to keep on carrying out their duties to please their commander: the Spanish Government. In a battle of digging a hole in the wall the Spaniards have built, the friars were its military: ready to kill anyone who dares to get close to this wall.
But this was not a fairytale with one superhero. This was real life.
Thus, upon synthesizing the works of Rizal, one cannot help but ponder “Did he genuinely try to break into these walls created by the colonizers if one could argue that his works were not truly for the people but mainly for self-satisfaction and self-service disguised in elitist patriotism?” This paper shall discuss the life of Rizal while closely analyzing his struggles, intellectual progression, and protests against the Spaniards. But to properly discuss the aforementioned topics, a part-by-part discussion amongst what the author of this paper believes as the most important parts of Rizal's life will be prioritized.
