In the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries it was commonly believed that the languages in India originated from Sanskrit. The common characteristics among some of the Dravidian languages which are distinct from lndo- Aryan particularly Sanskrit were first recognized in 1816. Now the availability of the abundant scholarly works on the different aspects of Dravidian languages firmly establishes an independent and distinct Dravidian family of languages among the world languages.
