The unprecedented experience of Gavrilescu, the main character in the La Țigănci short story, continues to arise various interpretations, proving the viability of this eliadesc writing. For some literary critics, he is the anti-hero by definition, which lives what Eliade understands by "level break", but without understanding anything of it. The ordinary man, with a banal existence, routinely in the profane becomes the Chosen One uselessly claimed by sacred, for ignorance prevents him from seeing beyond the Illusion. In the hut of the gypsies, he crosses a rite of passage, from life to death, proof being the shrouded curtain that will wrap his naked body, the terrible thirst for unpopularity, and the surprising encounter with the always young Hildegard, the beloved of his youth. We outline work performed within the framework of a current EC project. The goal is to construct a language-independent information system for a specific domain (environment/ecology/biodiversity) anchored in a language-independent ontology that is linked to wordnets in seven languages. Plato believed that Art, especially, poetry "establishes a vicious constitution in the soul."For Aristotle, "noblest art appeals to the intellect as well as to the feelings."Schopenhauer bestows it a place, "greater than science". Art is seen as an act uniting the Good, the beautiful and the Truth by Immanuel Kant. From the idea of art as "an instrument for tilling the human psyche, that it may continue to yield a harvest of vital beauty" as felt by Herbert Read, through Elbert Hubbard's announcement, "Art is not a thing-it is a way," to Pierre Bourdieu's declaration of the artistic field as "a site of contestation," Art has found itself at the centre of a war between aesthetics, poetics and politics. Since, all literature-poetry, prose, drama, novel and so on, are the different forms of art. These multiple, creative genres exemplify in what Frank Sibley, calls "aesthetic concepts"-taste, lifeless, serene, somber, and "non-aesthetic" or physical concepts-setting, concrete style, and characterization. Hence, the very vocabulary of literature as well as its message consists of antagonistic elements, having strong aesthetic flavor and sociopolitical application. In other words, literature is perceived, as an "aesthetically appealing," and "politically proselytizing" artefact. It is these fascinating crossroads that literature finds itself in the contemporary obfuscating jargon of theory. This paper as such is an effort to evaluate some of these opposite tendencies of literature, and vindicate how it offers strong advocacy of reading it not to apply or confirm a political or social theory but for the admiration of literature.
