There is an ever-increasing demand for more advanced and user-friendly FEM packages. Despite the great progress achieved in FEM industry, the modelling of masonry structures is still challenging at several scales. The present paper discusses the potential capabilities of both FEM packages ANSYS and LS-DYNA for multiple scales modelling of masonry structures. The smeared and discrete modelling approaches, constitutive models and solution strategies will be discussed and the outcome will be supported with examples for unreinforced and reinforced masonry. Further discussion will be given to the difficulties and challenging problems. The paper will be concluded to recommendations to enhance the current state and the aspects of future works.

Differences in the chemical nature between petroleum diesel fuels and vegetable oils-based fuels lead to differences in their physical properties affecting the combustion process inside the engine. In this work a detailed combustion diagnosis was applied to a turbocharged automotive diesel engine operating with neat palm oil biodiesel (POB), No. 2 diesel fuel and their blends at 20 and 50% POB by volume (B20 and B50 respectively). To isolate the fuel effect, tests were executed at constant power output without carrying out any modification of the engine or its fuel injection system. As the POB content in the blend increased, there was a slight reduction in the fuel/air equivalence ratio from 0.39 (B0) to 0.37 (B100), an advance of injection timing and of start of combustion. Additionally, brake thermal efficiency, combustion duration, maximum mean temperature, temperature at exhaust valve opening and exhaust gas efficiency decreased; while the peak pressure, exergy destruction rate ...

This study aims to investigate the effect of blast loads generated as a result of explosive charges on the existing exterior RC circular columns of a typical building in the city of Riyadh. A procedure has been developed for evaluating the dynamic characteristics of the circular column with and without retrofitting. A wide range of parametric studies have been performed as part of this investigation to examine the effects of stand-off distance, charge weight and the presence of CFRP retrofitting on the level of damage to the RC column. The nonlinear finite element analysis was carried out using LS-DYNA software with explicit time integration algorithms. Different charge weights of 100, 200, 500 and 1000 kg equivalent weight of TNT at stand-off distances of 1, 4 and 15 m were considered. Results described in this paper indicate that CFRP strengthening could be an effective solution to limit the damage caused by moderate explosions. The stand-off distance was found to play a very important role in mitigating the adverse effects of a blast. The results also indicate that the maximum lateral deflection experienced by the column decreased exponentially with the increase in the stand-off distance and also decreased for the columns strengthened with CFRP, compared with the unstrengthened columns.

The sandwich materials are new generation materials applied in automotive, aerospace and architectural applications. These materials are used in making panels and exteriors. The sandwich is made from two thin metal sheets with polymer/resin/layered between these sheets to bond and strengthen the sandwich material. In this investigation this sandwich material is fabricated using AA8011 and AA1100. These two are aluminium alloy sheet sandwich. The bonding is achieved by using an epoxy resin based adhesive through rolling process. The AA8011/PP/AA1100 sheets are 0.91mm, 1mm, and 0.91mm thickness respectively. The AA8011/PP/AA1100 sandwich sheets were subjected to tensile and flexural test to determine the respective strength parameters. This paper presents studies of the numerical prediction of the behaviour of polyurethane (PU) foam filled hat section tubes. Experimental results of the foam-filled single-hat and double-hat components tested in an impact testing machine are described. Consistent experimental load displacement curves were generated. FE analyses using LS-DYNA of the impact behaviours predicted are shown to agree favourably with experimental results. INTRODUCTION Tubular structures of single and double hat sections made of steel are frequently used as automotive body structural components such as front rails and rockers of unitized-body cars. An example is shown in Figure 1. These components absorb significant amounts of impact energy during front collisions and thus are indispensable countermeasures in ensuring vehicle crashworthiness and occupant safety. With the need for higher fuel economy and stringent emission norms, auto manufacturers are looking for means to reduce the vehicle's weight either by employing lighter materials like fiber-reinforced plastics or by decreasing the thickness (gauge) of the vehicle structures or a combination of both. Reducing the gauge leads to structural instability due to early inelastic buckling. This phenomenon of instability evokes the proposition of filling the thin walled tube like structural members with light, crushable fillers. Such members filled with PU-foam (and such other fillers) have increased resistance to local buckling mechanisms and higher strengths as well as energy absorbing capabilities. There has been a continued interest in the study of the axial crush behaviour of thin-walled structural components with box and hat sections through experimental, semi-analytical, empirical, and numerical means. Mahmood and Paluszny [1] presented semi-empirical relations for the prediction of average load-carrying capacities of closed rectangular box sections subjected to progressive local buckling under quasi-static axial compressive loads. Comparisons with experimental results were also given for steel columns with geometric aspect ratios relevant to automotive body applications such as front rails. Simplified theoretical and empirical procedures for predicting the performances of hollow-hat sections were reported in [2-4]. White and Jones [5] carried experimental studies on quasi-static axial crushing of steel tubes of single and double hat-sections. A detailed experimental study on progressive collapse behaviour of thin-walled closed-section structural components made from high-strength steels under quasi-static and impact axial loads was reported by Schneider and Jones [6], who also made a comparison with theoretical formulas which had been used successfully for predicting the behaviour of mild steel thin-walled structures.

Finite element modeling becomes the huge support in understanding technological process. Besides, there are no so much milling process studies, or these studies are simplified to, as orthogonal cutting process. This paper presents experiences results from orthogonal turning and face milling process. These results were taken for FE model validation and material deformation law constants prediction. In both cases some cutting process simplifications were taken, in order to define contact interaction to execute meso-scale FE analysis.
