Malraux's books on art, as one commentator writes, have been "skimmed a lot but very little read". As a result, his theory of art is surrounded by a cluster of simplistic and misleading myths which seem to be the result of superficial readings or simply relying on someone else's opinion. I have discussed many of these myths - often propagated by quite eminent figures in the history of art or aesthetics - in my book on Malraux's theory of art.
