Mark of the Cognitive

Some philosophers search for the mark of the cognitive: a set of individually necessary and jointly su cient conditions identifying all and only the instances of cognition. They claim the mark is necessary to answer di cult questions concerning the nature and distribution of cognition. Here, I will argue that, as things stand, given the current landscape of cognitive science, we are not able to identify a mark of the cognitive. I proceed as follows. First, I clarify some factors motivating the search for the mark of the cognitive, thereby highlighting the desiderata the mark is supposed to satisfy. Then, I highlight a tension in the literature over the mark. Given the literature, it is not clear whether the search aims for a mark capturing the intuitive notion of cognition or a genuine scienti c kind. I then consider each option in turn, claiming that,either way, no mark satisfying the desiderata can be provided. I then de ect a foreseeable objection and highlight some implications of my view.

The present century has seen renewed interest in characterizing cognition, the object of inquiry of the cognitive sciences. In this paper, I describe the problem of cognition—the absence of a positive characterization of cognition despite a felt need for one. It is widely recognized that the problem is motivated by decades of controversy among cognitive scientists over foundational questions, such as whether non-neural parts of the body or environment can realize cognitive processes, or whether plants and microbes have cognitive processes. The dominant strategy for addressing the problem of cognition is to seek a dichotomous criterion that vindicates some set of controversial claims. However, I argue that the problem of cognition is also motivated by ongoing conceptual development in cognitive science, and I describe four benefits that a characterization of cognition could confer. Given these benefits, I recommend an alternative criterion of success, ecumenical extensional adequacy, on which the aim is to describe the variation in expert judgments rather than to correct this variation by taking sides in sectarian disputes. I argue that if we had an ecumenical solution to the problem of cognition, we would have achieved much of what we should want from a " mark of the cognitive " .

Die Vertreter der These der erweiterten Kognition behaupten, dass kognitive Prozesse nicht nur in zentralen Nervensystemen kognitiver Wesen stattfinden, sondern sich in die Umwelt dieser Wesen hinein erstrecken (Abschnitt 1).
Adams und Aizawa bestreiten dies. Ihrer Argumentation zufolge ist das Beinhalten von nicht-abgeleiteten Repräsentationen eine notwendige Bedingung für kognitive Prozesse. Da sich aber solche Repräsentationen nur in zentralen Nervensystemen finden, ist die These der erweiterten Kognition falsch (Abschnitt 2). Diese Hausarbeit zeigt zwei Schwächen dieser Argumentation auf:
Zum Einen können Adams und Aizawa keinen Grund dafür liefern, warum Repräsentationen mit nicht-abgeleitetem Gehalt notwendigerweise in kognitiven Prozessen enthalten sein müssen (Abschnitt 3).
Zum Anderen ist die Annahme, dass es keine externen Repräsentationen mit nicht- abgeleitetem Gehalt gibt, ohne eine Naturalisierung dieses Gehalts nicht überprüfbar. Einen aussichtsreichen Ansatz zu einer Solchen liefert zwar Millikans teleosemanti- sche Theorie (vgl. Abschnitt 4), allerdings stellt sich heraus, dass diese durchaus Repräsentationen mit nicht-abgeleitetem Gehalt außerhalb kognitiver Wesen erlaubt und somit Adams und Aizawas zweite Prämisse widerlegt (Abschnitt 5).

Die klassische Auffassung von Kognition ist, dass in den Gehirnen bestimmter Tiere kognitive Prozesse stattfinden. Diese Ansicht ist jedoch häufig bezweifelt worden. So gibt es Philosophen und Kognitionswissenschaftler, die behaupten, dass nicht nur einzelne Tiere, sondern auch Insektenschwärme, Roboter oder virtuelle Agenten kognitive Wesen sind oder sein können. Zudem wird behauptet, dass die kognitiven Prozesse von Wesen nicht nur im zentralen Nervensystem stattfinden, sondern sich in den Körper oder sogar in die Umwelt hinein erstrecken.

In dieser Hausarbeit soll es um die Frage gehen, welche Rolle ein sogenanntes mark of the cognitive (vgl. Adams und Aizawa 2001, Abk.: MoC) spielt, wenn es darum geht die Wahrheit solcher Behauptungen zu überprüfen. Ich werde aufzeigen, dass ein MoC zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen nicht nötig ist. Es reichen – je nach Zweck – notwendige oder hinreichende Bedingungen für kognitive Prozesse, kognitive Wesen oder dafür, dass ein kognitiver Prozess einem kognitiven Wesen zuzuordnen ist. Zudem werde ich zeigen, dass diese notwendigen und/oder hinreichenden Bedingungen nur über die Wahrheit von HeC entscheiden können, wenn sie zum Einen anwendbar und zum Anderen allgemein akzeptiert sind und, dass sich aus dieser Tatsache Adäquatheitsbedingungen für sie ergeben.

Cognitive science is unusual in that cognitive scientists have dramatic disagreements about the extension of their object of study, cognition. This paper defends a novel analysis of the scientific concept of cognition: that cognition is the sensitive management of an agent’s behavior. This analysis is “modular,” so that its extension varies depending on how one interprets certain of its constituent terms. I argue that these variations correspond to extant disagreements between cognitive scientists. This correspondence is evidence that the proposed analysis models the contemporary understanding of cognition among scientists, without artificially resolving questions that are currently considered open.

This paper criticizes the role of intuition-based ascriptions of cognition that are closely related to the ascription of mind. This practice hinders the explication of a clear and stable target domain for the cognitive sciences. To move forward, the proposal is to cut the notion of cognition free from such ascriptions and the intuition-based judgments that drive them. Instead, cognition is reinterpreted and developed as a scientific concept that is tied to a material domain of research. In this reading, cognition becomes a changeable theoretical concept that can and must be adapted to the findings within this target domain. Taking humans as the best-established existing example of the relevant material target domain, this central case is extended to include all living systems. To clarify what it is about living systems that warrants their role as cognitive target domain, the new concept of cobolism is introduced as a complement to metabolism. Cobolism refers to the systematic ways in which each living system encompasses structures, processes and external events that maintain the fundamental metabolic processes that constitute the core of each living system. Cobolism is perfectly general, applies to bacterial and human cases alike, and provides a general format to describe wildly different cognitive organizations. It provides a clear target for the cognitive sciences to work on, turning them into what we can call the cognitive life sciences.
