One of the topics developed by the Clarissan abbess Isabel de Villena in her work "Vita Christi" was the politics. This text is framed in the cultural and political polemic known as "Querelle des Femmes" that was developed in the Late Middle Ages. The author vividly poses the issue "gender and sovereignty". She designs a complete political theory represented in a feminine paradigm: the Virgin is the theoretical and practical model of the “marvelous science” of human government. Strikingly, Mother Isabel offers this female model to any class of rulers, including men, who should look at themselves in that model, but especially those with institutional, secular or ecclesiastical, power. In order to develop these ideas, the Virgin is presented as the performer of the two main instances of power of that time embodying the functions of queen and female pope and offering a new basis to the “art of government” of the kingdoms and the Church. Uno de los temas desarrollados por la abadesa clarisa Isabel de Villena en su obra "Vita Christi" fue la política. Esta obra se enmarca en la polémica política y cultural conocida como "Querella de las Mujeres", que se desarrolló en la Baja Edad Media. La autora plantea vívidamente el tema "género y soberanía". Diseña una teoría política completa encarnada en un paradigma femenino: la Virgen es el modelo teórico y práctico de la "ciencia maravillosa" del gobierno humano. Sorprendentemente, la madre Isabel ofrece este modelo femenino a cualquier clase de gobernantes, incluidos los hombres, que se deben mirar en él, pero especialmente aquellos con poder institucional, secular o eclesiástico. Para desarrollar estas ideas, la Virgen se presenta como la titular de las dos principales instancias de poder de aquel tiempo encarnando las funciones de reina y papisa y ofreciendo un nuevo fundamento al "arte del gobierno" de los reinos y la Iglesia

Resumen: Durante la Baja Edad Media numerosas mujeres de la nobleza y de las oligarquías urbanas tomaron el hábito en algún monasterio. Se analizan las causas y dinámi-cas de estas profesiones, los diferentes comportamientos de las damas de dichos estamentos y las dotes, donaciones y privilegios que recibieron muchas de ellas. Estos últimos permitieron a varias religiosas tener criadas, disponer de bienes propios o reducir los límites de la clausura, surgiendo problemas en numerosas ocasiones derivados de las dotes y donaciones realizadas por los familiares de la monja en cuestión.
Abstract: During the Late Middle Ages, many women belonging to the nobility and the urban oligarchy took the habit to enter a monastery. This study analyzes the causes and dynamics of these professions, the diverse behaviour of the ladies of these social ranks, and the dowries, donations and privileges that many of them received. Certain privileges allowed nuns to have maids, to make use of their own property or to limit enclosure. On numerous occasions, the gifts and donations made by members of the nuns’ families became an issue in the monastery.

The Riccardiana Psalter (Florence, Biblioteca Riccardiana, 323), a thirteenth-century illustrated prayerbook, bears many marks of ownership, though the marks do not identify the individuals who used it with certainty. This article will suggest a manner of analyzing the manuscript that expands on the work of previous scholars, who proposed the conjectural patron Emperor Frederick II, and adds to the discussion the recent viewpoints of liturgical scholars, who suggest a nun’s use for the psalter. Particularly the psalter’s illustrations of eight scenes of Christ’s life will be questioned in this light. Consideration of its texts makes more connections to a possible conventual setting. Additional analysis of the psalter’s production process—including its models and Sicilian or Palestinian localization—and of its illustrations and their architectural allusions to sites of the Holy Land endorse both a special Holy Land character with a Sicilian influence.

En la política de promoción de las monjas mendicantes que desarrollaron los reyes de Castilla se percibe una tipología de “fundaciones en relación” con mujeres. Alfonso X y Pedro I colaboraron con sus amantes, Mayor Guillén y María de Padilla, y el segundo también con sus hijas, Beatriz e Isabel, para dar origen a monasterios de la Orden de Santa Clara o de sus formas previas. Estas páginas analizan unos procesos de fundación que enlazan lo personal y lo familiar con lo político, visibilizan formas de interacción entre los sexos y desvelan algunas de las fisonomías adoptadas por las religiosas que constituyeron la institución clarisa, una orden religiosa exclusivamente femenina en la que tuvieron gran peso las mujeres como agentes históricos.

Uno de los rasgos más llamativos de la vida religiosa de la Baja Edad Media fue el espectacular incremento de las mujeres consagradas a Dios, la diversificación de sus formas de vida y el gran peso de lo femenino en la simbología y el lenguaje religiosos. En estas páginas se analiza la complejidad del fenómeno partiendo de su característico vínculo con la ciudad por considerarlo factor decisivo. Se muestra el papel ejercido por las mujeres religiosas en la construcción y evolución del entramado sociopolítico urbano bajomedieval, tanto en una dimensión de libertad y autoridad que dio origen a nuevas formas de socialización e incidencia política femeninas, como de control por parte de los sistemas de poder institucionales y oligárquicos. El trabajo se centra en el contexto andaluz por la gran riqueza de sus manifestaciones religiosas femeninas considerando que ello tiene mucho que ver con la acción de las mujeres en la configuración de las nuevas cristiandades urbanas nacidas tras la reconquista. La amplitud del marco cronológico permite percibir su evolución y los cambios en el tránsito a la Edad Moderna.

This article reviews the problem of the Franciscan women's establishment in Andalusia during the 13th century. The problem lies in the legendary character of an important part of the data and the difficulty of defining precisely the types of Franciscan women's life that had presence and roots in this territory of reconquest and repopulation before the origin of the Order of Saint Clare. Then it analyzes the monasteries of the Poor Clares and it values the foundational phenomenology: who were its promoters, underlining the very prominent role of the Kings of Castile, as well as what their policies were, and which was the role of the Franciscan Order. Finally, assess the available data on the internal life of the communities. Este trabajo pasa revista a la problemática de la implantación franciscana femenina en la Andalucía del siglo XIII. El problema reside en el carácter legendario de una parte importante de las noticias y en la dificultad de delimitar con precisión los tipos de vida franciscana femenina que tuvieron presencia y arraigo en este territorio de reconquista y repoblación antes del origen de la Orden de Santa Clara. Analiza después los monasterios de Santa Clara valorando la fenomenología fundacional: quiénes fueron sus impulsores, con un papel muy destacado de los reyes de Castilla, así como cuáles fueron sus políticas fundacionales y cuál fue el papel ejercido por la Orden de San Francisco. Finalmente, valora los datos disponibles sobre el funcionamiento interno de las comunidades.

This project focuses on the observance and organization of women religious in the central Middle Ages (9th-11th centuries) to investigate female monasticism as a deliberately "ambiguous" form of social and religious organization. Traditional scholarship subscribed to the notion that, because of a failure to adopt homogeneous standards for observance and organization, women religious never matched the spiritual efficiency, cultural proficiency, and reformist impetus of their male peers. While recent case studies have revealed significant achievements in all of these domains, this heterogeneity is still regarded as revealing women religious’ and patrons’ refusal to subordinate local vested interests to institutional, cultural, and spiritual progress. By means of an analysis of evidence from c. 100 institutions from Lotharingia and Saxony relating to the self-perception of these women and the expectations of their patrons, the researchers will propose a new paradigm for evaluating female monasticism's "ambiguity". Two hypotheses will be tested. The first is that groups of women religious relied on ambiguous identities to construct credible narratives of self, respond effectively to changing societal contexts, and distinguish themselves from competing institutions. The second is that religious and secular elites supported these strategies, and regarded diversity in observance and organization as a means for women religious to respond adequately to society's diverse needs.
