Abstract: Mires are very selective habitats, and the colonisation by specifically adapted organisms makes them very important both for nature conservation and environmental education. They have, however, been threatened by different types of impacts. Our objective was to study diatoms in stations representative of the main typologies in the Site of Community Importance IT3230060 "Danta Mires", also to produce data for a management plan in the frame of a Life Project. Five shallow pools within different mountain mires were sampled in summer 2005 and morphologically and physicochemically characterized. The sampled sites cover a rather wide pH and TDS content gradient with very low nitrate and silica values. Diatoms were found to dominate in terms of numbers of taxa, followed by desmids, cyanoprokaryotes and filamentous green algae. In total, 86 diatom taxa, belonging to 35 genera, were found. As expected for acidic, low-mineralization waters the genera with the highest number of taxa were Eunotia and Pinnularia, followed by Encyonema, Cymbopleura, Gomphonema, and Nitzschia. The most frequent and abundant taxa were: Frustulia crassinervia, Nitzschia acidoclinata, Kobayasiella micropunctata, Encyonema neogracile, Brachysira brebissonii, Nitzschia perminuta, and Encyonema lunatum. Taxa abundant only in one or few sites were: Eunotia paludosa, Staurosira spinarum, Encyonopsis cesatii, and Achnanthidium minutissimum. Several rare taxa of special interest for their distribution and/or rarity could be found (e.g. Chamaepinnularia schauppiana, Cymbopleura incertiformis var. linearis, C. subapiculata, Eunotia lapponica, Microfissurata paludosa). A small standing-water ecosystem (SWE) is a shallow (<20 m) lentic water body with a surface of a few hectares (10 ha). Compared to larger counterparts, they exhibit wider ecotones, sometimes even equaling their whole surface, which maximizes structural heterogeneity, supporting exceptionally high biodiversity, metabolic rates, and functionality. Surprisingly, no binding regulations support global strategies for SWE conservation. This work consists of a literature review performed for the period 2004–2018 to assess the ecological and conservation value of SWEs and the contribution of theWater Framework Directive (WFD) in promoting their conservation. Outcomes
from this work open new perspectives on SWEs, which emerge as valuable ecosystems, and confirm their pivotal contribution to watershed biodiversity, resilience, and functionality. Results also suggest
clear narrative trends and large knowledge gaps across geographical areas, biological components, and target issues. Additionally, we note that SWEs are under-represented in the frame of WFD implementation, stressing their marginality into assessing procedures. All of this calls for further studies, especially outside Europe and with a global, multi-taxon perspective. These should be devoted to quantitatively assess the roles of SWEs in maintaining global water ecosystem quality, biodiversity, and services, and to prioritize management actions for their conservation.

Southern South American peatlands (SSAP) play a key role in the ecological dynamics of Patagonia. They mostly comprise of undisturbed environments which provide important ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, water reservoir and habitat for both widespread and endemic organisms. When compared with boreal peatlands, our knowledge of the functioning of SSAP is poor, and it is necessary to raise awareness about their scientific and ecological value and to ensure their conservation. This article examines a broad base of historical and contemporary published research literature on the peatlands of Chile and Argentina, from 1843 onwards, to identify gaps in knowledge, implications for the assessment of peatland functioning, and targets for peatland conservation and management. Question: How did frequency and local abundance of key bryophytes in Dutch fens change between 1940 and 2000?
Location: The Netherlands.
Methods: A total of 1939 vegetation releves, objectively assigned to the class Parvocaricetea and dating from the period 1940–1999 inclusive, were extracted from a national Netherlands database. From this releve set, two additional data sets were derived; thesewere syntaxonomically homogeneous at the association level. One contained 418 Scorpidio-Caricetum diandrae releves and the other 956 Pallavicinio-Sphagnetum releves. The following analyses were done for these three data sets: frequency and local abundance change of 13 bryophyte species over three 20-yr periods were described using logistic regression and the nonparametric Jonckheere–Terpstra test, respectively.
Results: Acidophytic, late-successional species, notably Sphagnum palustre and Polytrichum uliginosum, have replaced relatively early-successional species such as brown mosses, Sphagnum subnitens and Sphagnum squarrosum during the studied period. The results were mostly consistent across the three data sets. Local abundance patterns generally paralleled those of frequency, although cover trends were often less robust.
Conclusions: Drastic changes have taken place in the bryophyte layer of
Dutch fens between 1940 and 2000. Our study has shown that acidophytic, late-successional bryophytes have replaced relatively early-successional brown moss and Sphagnum species. Both hydrological changes and nutrient shifts (in particular phosphorus enrichment and ammonium toxicity) appear to have been responsible for the observed rapid shifts in the bryophyte layer of Dutch fens.

Introduction: This work is contribution to understanding the vegetacion dynamics of Bled basin. A cartographic array with simple phytosocial descriptions of some areas. The plain part is mostly ground moraine hydroameliorated with canals. On calcereous clay sandy gravel sediments different soils developed; eutric brown soils where transformed into agricultural landscape. All habitats are fragmented and with landuse changes of some areas different successions are taking place. Non-forest habitats, mires and fens are highly connected with tufa-forming springs and are presented in a wider area. This is beta publication, representing non-forest habitats and some forest patches on plain; ancient flood forests of common oak (Quercus robur), black alder (Alnus glutinosa) and common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) as main species.
