The present study is an original research on the hymnographical “explosion” that took place on Mount Athos from the middle of the 18th to the first decades of the 20th
century. During this period, there was also an increase in the composition and rendition into vernacular Greek of panygeric and hagiographical texts, as well as an important production of ecclesiastical music, which continued the wealth of production of the previous centuries. The liturgical needs of Athonite monasteries and their dependencies and the attempt to venerate certain Saints with panygeric services, Vitae and homilies constitute the direct cause of this great growth.
Futhermore, the hymnographers of this period copied other texts and composed or paraphrased encomia and Vitae of Saints. This study focuses on six hymnographers, the works of which are found in 113 autograph manuscripts and copies of Iveron and other monasteries.

The scale of the Bulgarian presence to the north of Mount Athos is well illustrated by the numerous Slavic toponyms in this region, such as Provlakas (10th-21th c.), Globutzitza (934-982), Lozikin (982-1141), Gradiska (982-1001), Zelenitza (982-1001), Develikeia (1042-21th c.), Kamena (908-1071), Radohosta (1008), Roudava (1008-1085), Resetinikeia (996) and Muzdoloka (996). The situation inside Athos is illustrated by the Slavic place names Cherni Vir or Mavros Viros (980-21th c.), Tzernoglavou (1071), Banitza (1018- 21th c,), the monasteries of Zelianos (1033-1363) and Kaletzi (1045-1080).

This paper examines the series of plague epidemics that
struck the monastic communities of Mount Athos during the second half
of the 14th and early 15th centuries, the factors that enabled their transmission and their effects on monastic life.

This volume deals with the Aramaic Levi Document, also known as Aramaic Levi or the Aramaic Testament of Levi. Chapter one contains a systematic reflection on the content of this Aramaic work, situates it in the historical context of the Second Temple period, and looks for an answer as to its literary structure and genre. Then in chapter two the manuscripts from Cairo Genizah, Mount Athos, and Qumran are edited together with their English translation, paleographical notes, and philological comments. Chapter three comments on each literary unit of the Document, its relation to the biblical text, pseudepigraphic Jewish literature, and scribal school practices in ancient Mesopotamia. At the end of the book, the reader may consult Aramaic, Greek, and Syriac concordances. Sixteen plates of photographs of all the manuscripts facilitate the reader’s reference to the originals. The photographs of the Mount Athos manuscripts are published here for the very first time.
