Negative Reciprocity

SUMMARY: Chapter 9, in Renfrew & Bahn's textbook (Archaeology: Theories, Methods, and Practice), covers the various types of trade and exchange in past societies, and how one may assess it, including different types of interactions (e.g., gift exchange), various scientific techniques (e.g., microscopic examination of materials; trace-element analysis; isotopic analysis), studying material and/or artifact distributions, assessing production and consumption, and analyzing the various means of exchange and interaction.  In my view, this is one of the best college textbooks available, and is invaluable for students, archaeologists, and the public in general, to obtain a top notch overview of approaching and interpreting the archaeological record. UPDATED/REVISED March, 2021, some editing and new formatting, minimal new materials.

Este libro presenta una lectura antropológica de los campos de Auschwitz a partir de la cual se reinterpreta, desde una perspectiva holista, el conocimiento fragmentario que las memorias de los supervivientes nos han transmitido sobre cómo era el día a día en aquel mundo devastado y en qué consistía la zona gris de las relaciones sociales que surgieron a la sombra de las chimeneas: el contexto etnográfico e histórico de los campos, los rituales de paso que presidían el proceso de deshumanización de las víctimas, cómo era la economía política del tiempo, las jerarquías e intercambios entre prisioneros o los sucesos que adquirieron el carácter de leyendas épicas. Sin embargo, estos problemas no se plantean como descripciones abstractas sobre el genocidio, sino como parte de la cotidianeidad excepcional que los involuntarios participantes se vieron obligados a sufrir.

En las ciencias sociales y humanas, el análisis de los casos extremos suscita importantes y relevantes cuestiones teóricas que nos permiten considerar la normalidad, los conflictos y las crisis bajo otro prisma. Al mismo tiempo, también abren un interrogante moral sobre la práctica de nuestras disciplinas, cuando se reflexiona sobre las omisiones y silencios que ciencias como la Antropología han mantenido ante catástrofes sociales y culturales, como los etnocidios y genocidios del siglo xx, que han padecido tanto personas pertenecientes a las culturas de donde procedían los antropólogos como a las de las sociedades que han estudiado tradicionalmente.

Die Sache der Reziprozität findet sich in alltäglichen Phänomenen wie dem des Grüßens und des Sich-Verabschiedens, des Dankens und des Schenkens. Überall dort und in vielen weiteren Phänomenen erkennen die Akteure sich wechselseitig als Personen an. Um die Sache der Reziprozität auf den Begriff zu bringen, wird ihr zunächst exemplarisch nachgespürt, indem Protokolle dieser alltäglichen Phänomene mit der Objektiven Hermeneutik analysiert werden. So wird ein erster Begriff struktureller Reziprozität entwickelt: Durch die bloße durch sie selbst wahrnehmbare Ko-Präsenz von zwei oder mehr Angehörigen der Gattung Mensch sind diese so aufeinander bezogen, dass das, was auch immer einer von ihnen tut, objektiv ein Bezugnehmen auf den anderen darstellt und ihm und damit zugleich sich selbst einen Ort im geteilten Universum der Gattung zuweist. Mit diesem Begriff im Gepäck wird sodann eine Reise durch die systematisierenden Deutungen, theoretischen Explikationen und philosophischen Systematisierungen von Reziprozität durch Marcel Mauss, Claude Lévi-Strauss und Marcel Hénaff unternommen. Auf dieser Reise wird deren anhand ethnographischen Materials und philosophischer Reflexionen entwickelte Begrifflichkeit von Gabe und generalisiertem Tausch mit den an alltäglichen Phänomenen zunächst gebildeten, an der Re-Analyse von Teilen des Materials und der argumentativen Überprüfung der Reflexionen weiterentwickelten eigenen Erkenntnissen konfrontiert. So wird ein empirisch gesättigter und theoretisch weiterentwickelter Begriff der strukturellen Reziprozität gewonnen. Im Verlauf der Darstellung wird immer wieder auf leicht zugängliche Phänomene hingewiesen, die den Studenten Forschungsmöglichkeiten zur Prüfung und Anreicherung der Argumentation bieten.

This book presents the origin of the Kotiria peoples, as told by the
narrator Anastasio Cordeiro and recorded by the anthropologist
Janet Chernela in the Uaupés river basin of Brazil in 1979.  This is its first full presentation in sound and print.  In the narrative a Kotiria ancestral band of pre-humans discovers Cubeo women gardening.  The two prepare the first Po'oa exchange ceremony in which the Kotiria ancestors provide red body paint and the Cubeo women manioc beer.  When the powerful jaguar tooth necklaces of the Kotiria devour the women, the women's Cubeo brothers hunt the Kotiria and burn their tree homes.  The first Kotiria are born from raindrops that descend from the flames.  This publication supplies an important missing element necessary to understanding the sociality of Eastern Tukanaon peoples of the Northwest Amazon.  It is made possible by the Kotiria association AIPOK (Associação Indígena do Povo Kótiria) and the Council of Culture of Manaus, Brazil.

This lecture looks at three ethnographies that informed Marcel Mauss' Essay on the Gift, three anthropologists who were inspired by Marcel Mauss' work, and three scholars who have developed further theory about reciprocity.
