Negative Social Capital

CAPITAL SOCIAL Y REDES MIGRATORIAS DESDE CONTEXTOS URBANOS.
COLONIA VILLA NUEVA, CHIHUAHUA, CHIHUAHUA.
La colonia Villa Nueva se encuentra ubicada al norte de la ciudad de Chihuahua en el área de influencia del parque industrial Nombre de Dios. Surgida del Movimiento Urbano Popular, representa una de las colonias con mayor población inmigrante y emigrante de la ciudad.
Esta investigación se basa en el análisis de las redes sociales usando el sistema de grafos así como las trayectorias migratorias que nos permiten en su conjunto, acceder a una comprensión lo más acabada posible de la correspondencia intrínseca entre Capital Social y redes sociales en el contexto de expulsión de población de la colonia Villa Nueva mediante el estudio detallado del conjunto de relaciones que el individuo estableció previamente —mediante reciprocidad e intercambios de bienes, servicios o favores— que  pone en acción al momento de migrar.
Éstas relaciones dan origen a tres tipos de estructuras de interacción: Las redes de corto plazo se fincan en los intercambios inmediatos y operan en un periodo de tiempo limitado por el evento en el que se generan sin que preexista relación alguna entre los sujetos ni compromiso de reciprocidad en el largo plazo, y convierten en recursos la confianza, las normas, los valores y las conductas deseables. Las redes de mediano plazo operan mediante iteraciones de intercambios equiparables y su duración depende de las propias redes preexistentes del sujeto, de su proyecto de vida y de su capacidad para negociar los intercambios futuros sin agotar la red, de ello depende que las relaciones perduren en redes de largo plazo; éstas últimas se fincan en la selección de sujetos de la red extensa y en la negociación de intercambios de larga duración que pueden disiparse por la reiteración de intercambios que lleva al agotamiento de la red.
Revisamos primeramente las teorías de capital social y redes migratorias, seguidas de la ubicación contextual de la colonia Villa Nueva, posteriormente agregamos un bosquejo de las redes de relaciones de nuestros tres colaboradores aquí analizados y los materiales de apoyo del análisis correspondientes, finalmente se presenta una sección estadística y analítica, y las conclusiones derivadas de esta investigación.

With research on social relations hitherto, it is not clear how and why negative relationships between neighbours emerge. In this study, arguments are developed on the conditions within neighbourhoods and on individual characteristics that facilitate negative relations amongst neighbours. The arguments are divided according to three perspectives: diversity, uncertainty, and social influence. Most support is found for the social influence perspective, and both the neighbourhood and the individual-level seem important in explaining negative relationships. Important factors that explain the likelihood for negative relationships are the willingness of residents to intervene on behalf of the neighbourhood, religious diversity, and individually perceived conflicts in the neighbourhood. However, people who have more relationships outside of the neighbourhood, undergo less influence of perceived conflict.

Economic processes, consisting of interactions between human beings, exploit the social capital of persons endowed with specific cultures, identities and education. By taking into account this complexity, we focus on the role of institutions and policymaking in the building of social capital and its relevance to the fulfilment of their objectives. Social capital, however, is elusive and has several dimensions with which to interpret its multifaceted functions in economics and society. We cannot forget that social capital is sometimes even undesirable for society, for instance when unethically used. Even so, it is widely accepted that social capital has stable and positive effects.

Southern Louisiana has played host to the oil industry for nearly a century. While much of the contemporary activity is offshore, the communities of southern Louisiana provide labor and support to this vast enterprise. Truck-based transportation is one component of this support industry. In the past, the trucking industry meshed with the social and familial networks of the region, but state-level deregulation has rendered these connections inert. Based on interviews with truck drivers and truck company owners, this paper maps the historic importance of these social networks and gauges the impact of deregulation in social, rather than economic, terms. While the paramount impact of deregulation has been significant losses of power and control by local communities, the aftermath of these policy changes has opened up the trucking industry to new ethnic, geographic, and gender groups.
