This paper analyzes four short stories by New Mexico priest, poet, and historian Fray Angelico Chavez, particularly how he uses miracles and biblical typology in his narratives to create a historiography of Hispano New Mexico in which history is governed by God and the Hispano residents of New Mexico are still under God's care. Chavez treats New Mexico as an American Holy Land, and gives the people of New Mexico a history-in-fiction that counters the racist histories of the region written by Anglo settlers.
