Based on the mutual gaze concept and social representations theory, this study explored locals and nudists’ perceptions of social nudity and each other. Interviews with locals and nudists at a beach destination in Mexico revealed that both groups’ representations of naturism’s ideals, practices and benefits differ considerably. While nudists conceive nudism as a way of life, locals see it as a practice that outside the nudist space is morally unacceptable. Locals’ acceptance of nudists is largely conditioned by their economic significance, and residents have been active subjects in decisions about nudists’ use of local spaces. Nudists have positive perceptions of locals but are dissatisfied with spatial sanctions of nudism. Practical implications are presented.

Advocates of naturist practice have long celebrated it as the authentic human-nature relationship, a way of re-kindling our connections with the natural world, and a means of achieving and maintaining physical, mental and spiritual health. Using Hans Surén’s book Man and Sunlight (1927) as an example, this paper explores the importance of sensory perception to, and the embodied geographies of, naturism and the particular ways in which early twentieth century naturists conceptualised, valued and attached meaning to the relationship between the body and nature. In so doing, the paper outlines the ways in naturist practice reflected contemporary European-wide debates on urbanism, nationhood, health, and nature, and highlights some of the connections between early naturist philosophy and contemporary phenomenological theory.

Motivations to attend nudist festivals and their association with tourist motivation factors have been largely unexplored. Based on qualitative interviews with nudist tourists, this study explored these individuals’ motivations for attending a nudist festival in Mexico. The findings reveal a complex amalgamation of both festival and tourism motivation constructs. Based on the escape-seeking dichotomy and push-pull framework, data analyses revealed that the interpersonal festival motivations are more significant than personal factors are and the pull factors of the event-hosting destination can dominate over festival factors. The findings have important practical implications for nudism festival organisers.

Since it was first adopted by the INF-FNI in 1974, the definition of naturism has always been fundamentally the same, the exact wording used by federations, magazines, books and websites has varied a lot. In some cases, the differences have been significant enough to alter the meaning.
The INF-FNI has been asked on many occasions to provide the official wording. Unfortunately the INF-FNI records have not been consistent either. As such, the INF-FNI Central Committee tasked me with a project to research and hopefully determine the official wording of the INF-FNI’s definition of naturism.

Stigma may result in tense social interactions and discrimination between stigmatisers and stigmatised individuals. Despite its social relevance, stigma has been largely neglected in tourism sociocultural studies. Framed by Goffman's and Falk's theoretical propositions of social stigma, this paper aimed to explore local's stigmatisation of tourists' behaviour. This study revealed that locals' stigmatisation of tourists' behaviours can be spatially negotiated and deconstructed through social interactions. The data analysis also found that not all tourists are equally stigmatised and that tourists' conduct can be highly stigmatised if adopted by locals. Based on in-depth interviews, these findings were drawn from an examination of locals' perceptions of tourists' nudist behaviours in a Mexican destination. This research's results contribute to a fuller understanding of how locals (de)construct their stigmas of tourists' behaviours through local-tourist sociocultural interactions.

Wykład przybliży słuchaczom szczególny przypadek nagości praktykowanej społecznie i publicznie, czyli naturyzmu. Tytułowy eksces to nieposłuszeństwo wobec tradycyjnych norm moralnych prywatyzujących nagość, zinstytucjonalizowane w postaci aktu naturystycznej transgresji. W wykładzie prowadząca postara się udzielić odpowiedzi na pytania, jakie warunki muszą zostać spełnione, by grupa nieznajomych osób mogła wspólnie plażować i jakie normy powinny być skonstruowane, by zagwarantować im bezpieczeństwo moralne i fizyczne, wreszcie – ile natury a ile kultury zawiera w sobie naturyzm.

We alternately think of nudity as a perversion and a state of innocence. Why is our response so contradictory and why is nudity treated so differently in different contexts? Drawing on popular culture, literature, philosophy, religion, and firsthand interviews in order to answer these questions, Barcan encounters morticians, nudists, strippers, nurses, tattooists, artists and pornographers. Shining a light on a topic that has been largely ignored despite its ability to titillate, shock and entertain, Nudity is a fascinating blend of meaningful minutiae and big philosophical questions about this most unnatural state of nature.

This study examined if college students supportive of social nudity would differ from students opposed to social nudity on self-acceptance and acceptance of culturally diverse others. Using data from 384 participants, pro- and anti-nudity groups were formed based on students scoring in the upper (n=59) and lower (n=64) quartiles on a measure assessing attitudes toward social nudity. Hypotheses were partially supported. Results indicated that pro-nudity students significantly differed from anti-nudity students on comfort with their bodies' appearances, but not on self-acceptance. Pro-nudity students also were significantly more accepting of other religious groups and gays and lesbians compared with anti-nudity students, but they did not differ on their attitudes toward the disabled. A trend was noted indicating that pro-nudity students were less prejudiced toward ethnically dissimilar others compared with anti-nudity students. Follow-up exploratory analyses suggested that pro-nudity students' increased openness to sexuality in general accounted for the two groups' discrepant views toward religiously dissimilar others and gays and lesbians. Pro-nudity students' relative tolerance for cultural diversity is discussed.

Modesty has been defined as decorum in relation to physical nakedness, and sexual and eliminative behavior (Newson and Newson 1968). The connection between nakedness, sexuality, and modesty with respect to family members dates back millennia. Leviticus prohibited incest with the phrase, "Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of ..." and then specified a lengthy list of forbidden relatives. We will review contemporary theories and research projects concerning modesty and then discuss the results of a study we designed in order to investigate age trends in the development of modesty.

The character of tourism in protected areas has remained predominantly unchanged over time. Should a new approach to tourism and recreational zonation in protected areas accommodate a broader spectrum of nature-based tourism activities? Using naturism as a novel example, this form of tourism could be accommodated by applying spatial and temporal recreational zonation of protected areas and associated facilities. In the face of growing dependence on revenue from tourism, it is concluded that policies governing tourism in protected areas be revised. This revision should be transparent and uniform to generate predictable outcomes or decisions, irrespective of the personal biases, values or subjective judgements of decision-makers. The uncertainty associated with introducing a novel tourism activity into a protected area may be addressed through simultaneously applying the precautionary principle and adaptive management in a limited stepwise manner.
