Oilseed

The present study was conducted during kharif 2017 in three villages of Nagapattinam district to assess the suitable variety of Groundnut. Five farmers’ field were randomly selected and sown three high yielding improved varieties of groundnut namely Kadiri 9, CO 6 and ICGV 91114 with five replications with one check variety already grown by the farmers. The study revealed that Kadiri 9 recorded higher pod yield (19.87 q/ha), higher number of pods/plant (21.12), lesser root rot incidence (4.30 %) and optimum plant population (33.02 plants / M2 ) as compared to CO 6 and ICGV 91114. Kadiri 9, CO 6, and ICGV 91114 recorded 35.15, 27.10 and 18.89 per cent higher yield than the check variety TMV 7, respectively. A reduction in root rot incidence, leaf minor, leaf spot, Spodoptera damage and optimum plant population was observed in all the three varieties as compared to check variety. Gross and net returns were Rs.1,19,220/- and Rs.73,990/-ha, respectively by cultivating Kadiri 9 as against Rs.77,280/- and Rs.37,824/-ha in the check variety. Hence, it was inferred that Kadiri 9 variety of ground nut proved better followed by CO 6 and ICGV 91114.

A steam toasting machine for pre-treatment of oil bearing seeds was designed and fabricated by Desfabeng Company Nigeria Limited Bida, Nigeria. The major component of the machine includes; hopper, heating unit, conveyor, toasting unit, electric motor of 0.25kW and a gear motor of 0.25kW. Results of testing of the system revealed maximum oil yield of 42 %, 46%, 48 % and 40 % for neem oil (8% mc), ground nut oil (6% mc), sesame oil (6%) and shea nut (10% mc) respectively. Also the result of physicochemical analysis of the oil sample showed that the values ranged from 0.3 to 2.87 for free fatty acid, 0.38 to 2.93 mg/g for peroxide value, and 39.12 mg/g to 106.16 mg/g for iodine value. The capacity of the system was 4 tons per day. The new system will help in eliminating the shortcoming associated with direct toasting of oilseeds with open fire.

Water is a valuable and irreplaceable natural resource and plays an important role in development, which is one of the most important components in producing and maintaining the balance and stability of ecosystems and environment. The average annual rainfall in Iran is one third of the global average rainfall (about 250 mm) and its evapotranspiration potential is three times the global potential. Therefore, Iran is in the group of arid and semi-arid countries. Nowadays, the vegetable oil production industry is considered a strategic industry in most countries of the world. In Iran, there are large arable lands and favorable fields for growing oilseeds. However, according to available statistics, more than 85-90% of the required oil is still supplied from abroad. Common oilseeds such as soybean, sunflower and canola, despite their many advantages, are limited in various aspects of cultivation and climatic conditions.  For example, soybean is an ideal crop in the North American corn belt and is not well adapted to other regions. Sunflower also need a lot of fertilizer and is susceptible to a variety of diseases and pests. Therefore, the need for new oil crops with more adaptation and fewer needs is strongly felt. In recent years, the planting of new oilseeds in drylands has attracted a lot of attention. The most important advantage of these crops is the high resistance to drought and spring cold. In this paper, three of these crops (safflower, camelina and dragon's head) are mentioned, which are hoped to enter the country's dryland crop rotation.

Camelina (Camelina sativa L. Crantz) is an oilseed crop from the Brassicaceae family with several characteristics that made it possible to cultivate in various regions of Iran. Camelina is an allohexaploid (2n = 6x = 40) and self-pollinated crop which grows well in the marginal and poor soils and tolerant to low fertility requirement. Moreover, the hardiness of the crop makes it suitable for cropping in low input agricultural fields, such as organic systems or poor soils. Several studies reported tolerance of this crop to abiotic stress including drought, low temperature and salinity. Likewise, the tolerance of this crop to biotic stress like pests and weeds has been also reported previously. Drought, low temperature and salinity tolerance are the main characteristics of camelina. Camelina also has low susceptibility to pests and diseases. This plant has a very high resistance to common pests in oilseeds such as flea beetles. Some studies reported camelina superiority to oilseed rape in terms of biotic and abiotic stress. The unique characteristics of camelina to environmental stresses make it a potential crop for rotating with cereals, and thus, camelina may be highly beneficial for agricultural systems in warm and dried regions of Iran. In the current study, we reviewed published reports of camelina which indicate its characteristics and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses.

In Punjab about 35 lakh ha area is put under wheat cultivation during Rabi season. This crop gives about Rs 61908/- net income/ha. In order to increase the farmer’s income as well as profitability, cultivation
of gobhi sarson was advocated to 40 honey bee keepers replacing wheat crop. The study was carried out at 40 honey bee keepers farm replacing about 16 ha area. It was found that the average yield of gobhi
sarson/ha was 20 q/ha and sold at the rate of Rs. 3700/q which gave a gross income of Rs 74000/ha. Similarly, honey produced from 10 bee hives by individual farmer was worth Rs 51952/- whereas from
one hectare wheat, gross income of Rs. 82500/- was obtained. Hence, it was evident that integration of gobhi sarson with bee keeping proved to be more economical than the cultivation of sole wheat crop.
Therefore, farmers must replace some area from wheat crop and put under gobhi sarson alongwith keeping of atleast 10 bee hives. This combination will definitely help the farmer in increasing the farm income.

Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis L.) is an industrial crop-producing seed with high oil concentration characterized by high gamma-linoleic acid. However, limited information is available on its response to the nutrient supply, especially P and K. The aim of this work was to compare the response of Evening Primrose to the application of N, P, and K alone or in combination in a P and K deficient soil in terms of grain yield, yield components, and oil composition in comparison to Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). Evening Primrose yielded 54.4% less seed and 67.3% less oil than Rapeseed. Such differences were reduced when nutrients, especially N or P, were applied. N stimulated Evening Primrose more than Rapeseed. Application of K favored Evening Primrose oil yield when no N or P were added, and this especially occurred by an enhancement of the pod number. Alternaria blight disease caused by Alternaria brassicae (Berk.) Sacc. has been reported from all the continents of the world affects most cruciferous crops and is one among the important diseases of rapeseed-mustard causing severe yield losses with no proven source of transferable resistance in any of the hosts. The pathogen is greatly influenced by weather with the highest disease incidence reported in wet seasons and in areas with relatively high rainfall. A. brassicae can affect host species at all stages of growth, including seed. Symptoms of the disease are characterized by formation of spots on leaves, stem and siliquae. Identification of signal molecules for induced resistance, development of bioformulations and disease forecasting module will enable trigger newer strategies for eco-friendly disease management for providing safer Alternaria blight free production of rapeseed-mustard with improved crop health.
