Opera, Music Theatre and Genre

This book introduces a new perspective on Claudio Monteverdi's Orfeo (1607), a work widely regarded as the 'first great opera', by exploring the influence of the Mantuan Accademia deglia Invaghiti, the group which hosted the opera’s performance, and to which the libretto author, Alessandro Striggio the Younger, belonged. Arguing that the Invaghiti played a key role in shaping the development of Orfeo, the author explores the philosophical underpinnings of the Invaghiti and Italian academies of the era. Drawing on new primary sources, he shows how the Invaghiti’s ideas about literature, dramaturgy, music, gender, and aesthetics were engaged and contested in the creation and staging of Orfeo. Relevant to researchers of music history, performance, and Renaissance and Baroque Italy, this study sheds new light on Monteverdi’s opera as an intellectual and philosophical work.

Статья посвящена драматургической роли пространства в опере, с одной стороны, обусловленного сюжетной ситуацией, с другой – организующего сценическое пространство в авторской режиссуре. В исследовании пространства автор опирается на методы анализа оперной драматургии, разработанные в лениградской-петербургской аналитической школе, главным образом, в трудах Е. А. Ручьевской. Впервые в отечественном музыкознании предлагается классификация основных видов пространства в зарубежной и русской классической опере XIX века – «интерьер» (закрытое, камерное), «площадь» (открытое пространство) и их варианты («келья», «тюремная камера», «каюта», «берег реки» и другие), а также смешанных видов («лес», «сад», дворцовый или бальный «зал», «море»); выделяются особые драматургические приемы («обезлюживание», «вторжение», «размыкание»). Отдельно рассматриваются оппозиции: сценическое – засценное, реальное – символическое пространство, специфика драматургического решения пространства в камерной опере (в том числе в моноопере). Пространство понимается как важнейший компонент музыкальной драматургии оперы, связанный с сюжетным и психологическим временем, влияющий на внешнее и внутреннее действие, темп событий, музыкальную композицию и форму, тип высказывания и даже тип вокальной речи персонажей.

/ The paper is devoted to the dramaturgical role of spatial element in opera, on the one side, conditioned by the storyline situation, and, on the other hand, organizing the stage special in the authorial stage direction. In his research of the spatial domain the author bases himself on the methods of analysis of opera dramaturgy developed in the Leningrad-St. Petersburg analytical school, primarily, in the works of Ekaterina Ruchyevskaya. For the first time in Russian musicology the classification of the chief categories of space is offered in 19th century Russian and European classical opera – the ‘interior’ (the closed, chamber space), the ‘plaza’ (open space) and their variants (‘monastic cell’, ‘prison cell’, ‘cabin’, ‘riverside’ and others), as well as mixed types (the ‘forest’, the ‘garden’, palace or ballroom ‘hall’, the ‘sea’); special dramaturgical techniques (‘empty stage’, ‘invasion’, ‘disconnection’) are introduced. Separate examination is made oppositions: stage vs. backstage, real vs. symbolic space; the specificity of the dramaturgical solution of space in chamber opera (including monoopera). Space is understood as the most important component of the musical dramaturgy of opera connected with the plotline and psychological time, affecting the outward and ward action, tempo of events, musical composition and form, type of utterance and even the type of the protagonist’s vocal speech.

« Aspects d’une rhétorique musicale sur la répression féminine dans l’opéra La Meurtrière de Giorgos Koumendakis »
ABSTRACT
Dans son dernier opéra en deux actes, intitulé La Meurtrière (I Phonissa, 2014), le compositeur Grec Giorgos Koumendakis (Crète, 1959) aborde la question toujours contemporaine de la soumission féminine en s’appuyant sur le roman de Alexandre Papadiamantis Les petites filles et la mort (trad. par Michel Saunier, Actes Sud, 2003). La condition féminine dans la société grecque au sommet du vingtième siècle s’expose à travers l’histoire de la veuve Khadoula Francoyiannoú, personnage principal de l’opéra, dont la vie a été marquée par la servitude, -d’abord auprès de son père et ensuite auprès de son mari-, le travail incessant, les grossesses non voulues, la misère et la perte de tout espoir pour l’avenir. Sa réflexion non seulement sur sa propre condition de femme, mais aussi à celle des bébés-filles dont la souffrance et le malheur constitueront des traits incontestables de leur vie à l’avenir -pour Francoyiannoú-, la conduit à des actes meurtrières qu’elle considère en tant que bonnes actions envers ces filles. Cependant, la structure du livret montre que tant le compositeur que le librettiste, Yannis Svolos, mettent au point le sujet de la répression de la femme, sujet auquel sera consacré presque tout le premier acte de l’opéra, cédant la place aux actes de folie et le châtiment final de Khadoula dans le deuxième acte.
Bien que l’analyse narratologique constitue une étape fondamentale de l’appréhension du contenu opératique, cette première étude vise surtout à mettre en surface les paramètres compositionnels qui permettent l’articulation d’une rhétorique musicale de la répression féminine et l’expression de ses résultats néfastes notamment au sein du premier acte de l’opéra. Parmi les aspects stylistiques - structurels  et les gestes musicaux qui font naître des dimensions intertextuelles l’on distingue a. l’intégration des matériaux musicaux issus de la musique traditionnelle grecque (démotique) et plus spécifiquement de chants- mélodies, modes et rythmes afin de former un langage musical propre à Khadoula et -dans un deuxième niveau- aux autres personnages de l’opéra b. la présence des genres musicaux liés à la tradition folklorique grecque comme les berceuses, les lamentations, les prières, les chansons d’enfants c. la participation significative de chorales d’adultes et d’enfants d. le traitement de la voix qui allant du Sprechstimme au cri et suivant le modèle de figures rhétoriques surtout de répétition souligne les racines anciennes de la soumission féminine et la problématique qu’elle pose et e. l’articulation et les changements organiques de la temporalité afin de créer le sentiment d’un temps à la fois détendu, lointain (évoquant le passé) et présent.
