Advances in medical research and technology have given rise to a convergent and innovative strategy for bone regeneration. Matrix-based regenerative engineering presents a versatile toolbox that amalgamates the capabilities of a number of fields such as advanced materials science and engineering, stem cell science, biophysics, developmental biology, and clinical translation for the regeneration of complex tissue and organs. The success of this approach is dependent upon the biomimetic scaffolds that not only provide a supportive template but mediate cellular activities toward functional bone tissue formation. Here we discuss the various aspects of regenerative engineering and the particular roles biomaterials play in ensuring positive outcomes.
