Geologically Bangladesh is composed of young fluvio-deltaic deposits of Mio-Pleistocene age. Most of this landmass is inundated during monsoon. Due to intricate river system and flooding, innumerable bridges and drainage structures are integral component of the highways. Till seventies, bridges were normally constructed on masonry caisson foundations. Presently instead of caissons bored cast-in-situ reinforced concrete pile is widely adopted in bridge foundation because it is found cost-effective, it saves appreciable construction time and the equipment and technology is readily available.
The varied and difficult sub-soil condition and uncontrolled construction procedure frequently cause defects in piles. This paper identifies the cause of defects and suggests quality control measures for bored cast-in-situ piles.

RESUMEN: Las cimentaciones profundas son usadas con el fin de brindar estabilidad a una variedad de estructuras tales como puentes, presas y edificaciones en condiciones donde las cimentaciones superficiales no la proporcionan. En consecuencia, ha surgido la necesidad de evaluar la calidad de este tipo de cimentaciones y descartar cualquier anomalia generada durante su proceso constructivo, motivo por el cual se han implementado los ensayos no destructivos, entre ellos la prueba de integridad de pilotes (PIT) que debido a sus bondades como lo son su rapidez y economia sumada a sus resultados, ha despertado el interes de los investigadores y constructores del medio. En el presente articulo se presentan aspectos generales de la prueba PIT y los resultados de su aplicacion en once pilotes en una construccion cerca a la ciudad de Palmira, Colombia. Deep foundations are widely used for structures - bridges, dams, docks and buildings - located at sites with poor soil conditions at shallow depth. Due to the extensive use of deep foundations, the need has arisen for evaluating the structural integrity of these types of foundations posterior to their installation. A variety of non-destructive testing methods have been proposed and implemented for assessing the condition of deep foundations, but the PIT (pile integrity test) remains one of the more popular methods due to its relatively low cost and the short time involved in conducting such a test. This article describes some of the general aspects of the PIT and a specific application of this test on eleven piles at a construction site near the city of Palmira, Colombia . Structural problems were identified in two of the eleven piles and posterior excavations of these two piles proved the effectiveness of the PIT for assessing the structural integrity of deep foundations.
