moreIn December 1935, Niceto Alcalá Zamora, president of the Second Spanish Republic, named Manuel Portela Valladares chief of his Government with the mission to organize the elections and to try to obtain a wide minority of center that was moderating the camera. This appointment usually is judged as the maneuver of an opportunist without definite ideology or as the choice of a dummy who was allowing to Alcala Zamora to increase his control on the political situation. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate, through analysis of Portela Valladares's discourse and review of his career during this period, that this political defended a real center project, coherent with his experience and his liberal creed and which purpose was to make easier rapprochement between the conflicting visions for stabilize political life and consolidate the Republican regime.
En diciembre de 1935 Niceto Alcalá Zamora, presidente de la Segunda República española, nombró a Manuel Portela Valladares jefe de su Gobierno con la misión de organizar las elecciones y tratar de conseguir una holgada minoría de centro que moderase la cámara. Este nombramiento suele juzgarse como la maniobra de un oportunista sin ideología definida o bien como la elección de un hombre de paja que permitiese a Alcalá Zamora aumentar su control sobre la situación política. El objetivo de este artículo es demostrar, a través del análisis del discurso de Portela Valladares y del repaso de su trayectoria durante este período, que este político defendía un proyecto de centro real, coherente con su experiencia y su credo liberal y cuyo fin era facilitar el acercamiento entre las visiones enfrentadas dominantes para conseguir estabilizar la vida política y consolidar el régimen republicano
