Post-migration studies

Städtische Räume in Deutschland zeigen noch heute zahlreiche Spuren und Einschreibungen aus der Zeit der deutschen Kolonialgeschichte. Das zivilgesellschaftliche Netzwerk zur Dekolonisierung der Erinnerungskultur unternimmt im Zusammenschluss mit Vereinen wie der Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland (ISD) seit einigen Jahren die Aufarbeitung des kolonialen Erbes in deutschen Städten. Teil des Netzwerks ist auch die Initiative Decolonize Erfurt, die sich mit lokalen Ausprägungen und Besonderheiten der Kolonialgeschichte und deren Fortwirken in der Gegenwart der Stadt beschäftigt. Mitglieder von Decolonize Erfurt haben im Wintersemester 2018/19 ein fächerübergreifendes Seminar an der Universität Erfurt initiiert, in dem ein dekolonialer Stadtrundgang sowie die Ausstellung «Kolonialismus in Erfurt, 1503 bis heute» entwickelt wurden. Wir trafen Mirjam Elomda von der ISD Thüringen, Cécile Stehrenberger und Urs Lindner von Decolonize Erfurt sowie Viviann Moana Wilmot, die in beiden Gruppen mitgewirkt hat, und sprachen mit ihnen über Grenzen und Potenziale des dekolonialen Stadtrundgangs für antirassistische Arbeit, Zeitlichkeiten und Sichtbarmachung von Kolonialität und über migrantische Erfahrungen im ostdeutschen Kontext. Das Gespräch führten wir am selben Tag, an dem die Akteur_innen auch zu einer öffentlichen Podiumsdiskussion mit der Erfurter Stadtverwaltung eingeladen waren.

Die Gesellschaft Deutschlands als eine „Post - Migrationsgesellschaft“ (Foroutan 2010) verstehend und  die  hiermit  verbundenen  Implikationen  eines  transformativen  Potentials  durch  Migrationen  hervorhebend  (vgl.  u.a.  Papadopoulos  et  al.  2008, S.211),  wird  im  folgenden  Artikel  gefragt,  ob  und  wie sich diese diskursiven ethnisierenden Veranderungen auch in den Geflüchtetenunterstützungsstrukturen wiederfinden sowie in der mit dem sogenannten ›Sommer der Migration‹ in Deutschland aufgekommene ›Willkommenskultur‹. Der Artikel nimmt die Verschränkungen gouvernementaler Techniken der  Regierung  (vgl.  Foucault  2006;  Lemke  2002)  und  der  Kontrolle  von  Migration  durch  die  rassifizierenden Praktiken des Othering (vgl. Castro Varela,
Mecheril 2016a) im Rahmen der ehrenamtlichen und professionellen
Unterstützungsarbeit für Geflüchtete in den Blick.  Anliegen dieses Artikels ist es, mit diesen Überlegungen verbundene methodologische Notwendigkeiten zu diskutieren. Im Vordergrund steht dabei die Frage, wie dekolonisierende und dekoloniale Perspektiven in Forschungspraktiken und -methoden (unter anderem der Migrationsforschung) einfließen können. Hierzu wird die ituationsanalyse im Anschluss an Adele Clarke (2005) in den Mittelpunkt gerückt.

Doan Bui, a journalist at L’Obs, published a personal book in 2016: Le Silence de mon père. It is a kind of investigation about the narrator’s father, who is aphasic because of a stroke. The interest of the book arises from the convergence of three factors. It is, first of all, a récit de filiation; it is at the same time a post-migration narrative; it finds, in the end, an original declination in relation to the Vietnamese language and its use of names, pronouns and interlocutor reference.

Doan Bui, journaliste à L’Obs, publie en 2016 un ouvrage personnel : Le Silence de mon père. C’est une sorte d’enquête que la narratrice mène au sujet de son père, devenu aphasique à cause d’un AVC. L’intérêt du récit naît de la convergence de trois facteurs. Il s’agit, en premier lieu, d’un récit de filiation, dans sa double acception familiale et littéraire ; c’est en même temps un récit de la post-migration en France ; la narration trouve, pour finir, une déclinaison originale en rapport à la langue vietnamienne et à son emploi des prénoms, des pronoms et des allocutifs.

How is class depicted in Swedish contemporary literature, and what can it teach us about contemporary society? In Doing Class, literary scholar Åsa Arping tries new pathways into the broad, mainly realistic Swedish novels of recent decades. She finds class-coded actions, thoughts and emotions even outside the traditional working-class literature, and explores how the story of class deepens when it is put into dialogue with other categories, such as gender, age and ethnicity/racialization.

Through reflections on the last twenty years of prose publishing, from Torbjörn Flygt's Underdog (2001) to Donia Saleh's Ya Leila (2020), the study shows how literature shapes and discusses the increasingly obscure class concept, where perceptions of work, identity, lifestyle and welfare state are rapidly changing.

“Artists on the move” is a research about visual artists who migrated to Russia from neighbouring countries. Although there is an intensive circulation of people on the post-soviet territory and people come to Russia to work in various spheres, the visual art scene currently has just a few artists who grew up and started their art education outside of Russia. Unlike in the case of more cosmopolitan cities (such as Berlin, London, Brussel and others), here the artists with migration experience do not have common and reliable strategies on how to make their way into the local artistic community and sustain their lives. I present five individual stories of the creators from Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan who moved to Moscow and Saint-Petersburg in the late 1990s or later.
The stories you can see here are just a preliminary outcome of the long conversations we had with the artists during the last couple weeks. I attempt to show both the diversity of their trajectories and the intersections between them. I am enormously grateful for the time and thoughts my informants shared with me.
The interviews were planned as biographical and included factual information, detailed descriptions of the actual situations from the informants’ personal and professional lives, as well as their reflections on their own position as “artists”, “migrants”, “representatives” of a particular culture, language, class and etc.

As of 1 June 2018, the symbol of the cross has to be shown in all state offices of Bavaria in Germany. In order to chart the churches' reaction, I return to a conversation that Robert N. Bellah and Martin E. Marty had during the 1960s and the 1970s. Drawing on the core concepts of this conversation, I analyze and assess today's cross controversy as a case of what I call the 'populist predicament'. I argue that Marty's programme of public theology provides a path out of the populist predicament because it combines the celebration and the critique of identity. Ultimately, I advocate for a pluralist position of public theology in the post-migrant context.

La presente compilación de artículos aborda la temática de las sociedades migratorias en la América Latina contemporánea enfocando las dinámicas de producción, incorporación y construcción de prácticas e imaginarios conectados con los antepasados inmigrantes y con sus lugares de origen por parte de los inmigrantes y sus descendientes. Los ensayos reunidos en este volumen parten de la tesis de que fracciones de latinoamericanos viven una realidad que incluye la experiencia migratoria de sus familiares y antepasados. Inmigrantes y descendientes de la segunda a la quinta generación realizan prácticas y construyen imaginarios de “intimidad” basados en la dialéctica constante entre ibi y alibi, acá y allá. El “ibi” es el lugar o los diferentes lugares de la relación y del contacto con los familiares y antepasados migrantes; mientras que el “alibi” es el lugar o los lugares ajenos de donde llegaron los migrantes y que ejercen su fuerza de atracción en tanto que otros mundos.
Con nuestro dossier pretendemos introducir el concepto de “intimidad” en los discursos actuales sobre diversidad. Junto a Berlant (1998), Jamieson (1999; 2011) y Valentine (2006) entendemos “intimidad” como una emoción y un valor sociocultural que resulta de prácticas de formación de relaciones de proximidad social y cultural. Además “intimidad” orienta las articulaciones entre identificaciones a escalas diferentes (de la personal a la internacional). En consecuencia, proponemos “intimidad” como una noción válida para dinamizar y complementar las nociones tradicionales de “identidad” y “etnicidad” que hasta el presente orbitan en torno a las discusiones sobre sociedades migratorias. La introducción de la perspectiva de intimidad nos parece importante dado que los conceptos “etnicidad” e “identidad” tienden – a pesar de definiciones postmodernas y constructivistas que acentúan la fluidez y las prácticas de formación de estas construcciones sociales y que son útiles para el análisis – a evocar un imaginario de una convivencia estática, como si las sociedades estuviesen compuestas por entidades sociales fijas que se confrontan en una guerra de culturas o se funden para construir un nueva super-entidad social llamada generalmente “estado nacional”.
